Hey,

I just finished the voiceover recordings (finally!). I'm now going to go through them, edit out the bad takes, possibly re-record any parts I felt could be better and send them your way.

BTW: did you ever finish script 6 - the one about the sound? My copy is empty...

I was going to write Script 6, unless hairy_hen came forward with anything?

New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh - Preservation Project (* unfinished - lots of info *)

Encoding MPEG-2 for DVD - obviously quality will vary depending on the compressibility of the source (noisy/grainy sources, or content with lots of action/motion, do not compress so well).

For optimum quality I would use CCE to do a multi-pass VBR encode, an average of 3000kbps would be an absolute minimum, above 4000kbps would be preferred.

How long is each episode? If you decide to fit 2-3 episodes onto a DVD5 then, taking into account size of audio & menus, try and fill the DVD5 to as close to capacity as you can.

If the source videos are interlaced, have you tried unfolding the fields?  The animation itself was done at 12 frames per second so, even with field blending, you should be able to get at least one field that is clean for each frame of animation.  If your source videos are no longer interlaced, this won't work, though.

It's the same for the PAL conversions of the Ewoks cartoons; however you will probably find that even if the animation is 12fps, camera pans and zooms are at 24fps  - and therefore there are no "clean" versions of certain frames to restore.

Newsgroup posting with current PC's?
Time

Yes, you need to be careful with data rate units because they can be confusing (a capital B and a lowercase b mean different things).

For example, at home I have a download speed of 30 Mbps and an upload of 3 Mbps.

That's equivalent to about 3.6 MB/s or 0.4 MB/s (some pedant will probably now chime in to say that should be in MiB/s!)

So a single layer DVDR would take me 20 minutes to download, or 3.5 hours to upload.

This might be stating the obvious, but most ISPs give you an upload speed that is much lower than their advertised download speed.

Do you know your actual upload speed? And how much data did you post? You can work out how long you should expect the posting to take, assuming that your connection is maxed out, then if it is significantly less you can investigate why and whether or not alternative software would help.

Those of a certain age may remember the fiendishly addictive late 80s game 'Stunt Car Racer' on the Amiga (And other platforms).

I must be of a certain age then, because I remember it well. I managed to beat the first set of tracks on the Amiga, it then repeats the same tracks but with blue colouring and a faster car. I found it impossible to progress from there, if you drove fast enough to beat your opponent you'd end up wrecking the car, and if you drove carefully to avoid damage you would always lose.

The game became even more fun when you had two Amigas, a null modem cable and a group of friends.

Thoughts on my new PC build
Time

Thanks for your feedback.

Regarding the MB, a Gigabyte GA-990XA-UD3 is actually about £10 cheaper than the MSI board - I went with MSI because of issues I've had with Gigabyte's support in the past (availability of driver updates, etc.). But this current PC uses a Gigabyte board and it's performed OK.

The SSD had read/write speeds of 440 MB/s and 140 MB/s respectively. There's a faster version which is up to 550MB/s and 510MB/s for an extra £10 - maybe I'll swap the MB for the Gigabyte model and get the faster SSD instead.

Planning to run Windows 7 64-bit.
