So this ancient machine of mine is getting flaky in it's old age; after random restarts and failing to boot I think I've narrowed the problem down to a failing stick of RAM, I've removed it and it's managed to stay stable so far.

But it has reminded me that technology has moved on and I've been meaning to replace it for some time now. 

Inspired by Harmy's new rig, I went online and picked some components. I'm unlikely to be working with uncompressed HD video, so I don't require such a high-powered work horse, just something with reasonable all-round performance on a budget:

CPU: AMD FX-6300 - £81
MB: MSI 990FXA-GD65 - £86
RAM: 2 x Kingston 4GB DDR3 1600MHz - £56
GPU: some Nvidia card I have lying around spare - £0
SSD: Adata 64GB - £37.50
HDD: WD 1TB Green - £45
PSU: Corsair CX500 500W (have a spare) - £0
Case: Antec VSK-4000E Tower ATX (because it's about time I changed my current beige one) - £25

Total budget ~ £330

I tried using nnedi3_rpow2 on the GOUT, but didn't get as good a result as DJ's team.

I don't think they ever posted the upscale script they were using, but I suspect it includes QTGMC in progressive-source mode.

Macrovision protection is more likely to cause problems when trying to capture using a DVD recorder. My guess is you'll get a "protected content - unable to record" message or similar.

I haven't any experience of this myself, but I've seen several redirection services that you can use to purchase items from Yahoo auctions in Japan. 

It was made available in 720p on THX's Facebook page, but unfortunately it was highly-compressed (and had switched audio channels, IIRC). Let me find the thread...

I've just read that the first example of Bullet Time can be found in the obscure South African 1981 film Kill and Kill Again. Unfortunately the video at the Youtube link was taken down.

It's called a Dolly Zoom, and yes Wikipedia agrees with your belief that it was first used in Vertigo.

Well I worked it out where I had heard it before - it was fairly obscure, but it was interesting to research and brought back some memories.

For those interested, I recognised the melody from the Dragons Megademo released on the Amiga demoscene in 1990. Part of this production (called the "Unlimited Bobs Demo") featured a tune called Spaceship505 by a dutch Amiga musician named Zzzax, which uses the melody from the Droids original.
