The scans are all complete!

Project funding has just barely gotten started though and there is still plenty of time to get in on it.

List of Changes between Versions of the Prequel Trilogy
Time

"35mm Theatrical
-Anakin and Padme do not hold hands.

Digital Theatrical
-Anakin and Padme hold hands."

I can add that that doesn’t actually quite cover all the changes to that wedding scene.

It is not just that she doesn’t hold his hand in the 35mm but does so in the digital, but that it’s a totally different take used even starting a few seconds earlier when his robot hand is still down by his side in both versions. That whole sequence from a few seconds before through when the hand raises up and she holds it got replaced by a later drop in replacement take. When the robit hand is still down by his side it is in a different pose, looks a bit different and has totally different lighting on it (beautiful sparkly golden) compared to the digital.

Star Wars 1976 US Teaser Trailer 35mm scan
Time

I found that my second copy of the original 1976 teaser trailer for Star Wars actually still has good enough color that I could get something decent looking out of it in full color in just 2 minutes (!) of time spent of re-calibration! All I did is took my current test trial at scanner and then tweaked the color temp a bit and then way tweaked the tint slider and then way tweaked the black levels (way down to compensate for loss of some of the cyan and yellow dye which then makes the blacks too gray and faded out). That is probably not the ideal method to deal with film turning magenta, but found that it still produced something usable, almost instantly since, relatively speaking!, there was such a remarkably low amount of magenta fade for a 1976 Eastman print. I remember almost falling over when I first got since in the mail some years ago and seeing that it actually had some real color still in it. I’d only ever heard of stuff as far back as 1976 (that was Eastman) not being just about totally ultra magenta turned. I’m not sure at all I really have the color temp and tint adjusted to the most ideal settings even for that quick and dirty method, but it seemed the first quick adjust test of a few I quickly tried that seemed to look sort of reasonable across a few different frames.

Most frames are cropped to flat and some are left open matte when they had more image.

I haven’t rendered out any video yet. But a few stills samples:

still no response. He’s also asked other people about it but it seems like Brandon is the only one and doesn’t check emails very often. If it takes another month I think I’ll send Brandon an email myself in case he missed Howards email, if I can find it… This started in October, crazy…

Thanks for keeping after it! Would be cool to see this.

1976 U.S. Star Wars Teaser trailer 35mm scan
Time

In the AOTC 35mm scan project contributor’s PM thread I just put a Resilio link to an ultra-grindhouse for the very first original 1976 U.S. Star Wars Teaser trailer. This one was gone way magenta. I don’t know if the colors can be brought back or not, it would be some tricky work. I don’t have time to figure with that now so I just made it B&W. Just a straight desaturation, nothing ideal. Etc. very rough.

To bring something a bit new to what has been seen before I left it open matte (and to make it quick to do tonight I left the widescreen parts boxed within the open matte parts instead of expanding full screen, although this does give more impact to the open matte parts, but anyway so just a quick ultra grindhouse).

Here are a couple quick screen caps:

The Phantom Menace Trailer 'A' (the original U.S. teaser) 35mm 4k scan - complete and first grindhouse available
Time

I just posted a Reslio Link to a complete betahouse of the complete The Phantom Menace Trailer ‘A’ (the original U.S. teaser) in 4k REC709 Gamma 2.4 SDR in the AOTC contributor’s PM thread in UHD REC709 primaries Gamma 2.4 SDR at 95 bitrate h.265 (HEVC). No dirt cleanup and such and not quite fully tweaked, but the colors are already pretty close now to the actual 35mm look (compared on screen side by side with the actual 35mm frames on a D56 CRI 95 lightbox).

This is a side bonus of the AOTC 35mm scan project (also includes TPM Trailer ‘B’, the same trailer set for AOTC and the same trailer set for the very first Star Wars as the other side bonuses):
