Ranking the Star Wars films
Time

joefavs said:

I rewatched about half of the films since the last time I posted in this thread and I think I’ve arrived at my definitive ranking until IX comes out.

  1. Star Wars
  2. The Empire Strikes Back
  3. The Last Jedi
  4. The Force Awakens
  5. Return of the Jedi
  6. Solo
  7. Rogue One
  8. The Phantom Menace
  9. Attack of the Clones
  10. Revenge of the Sith

The PT is still kind of a toss-up, but the middle part of the list seems to have stabilized for me.

That looks about right. I may have shifted the top 5 around a little but only 3-5.

Important question…

In ROTJ does Grey Leader die then re-appear during the finale?

But are we talking OT or SE version?

Now now…

Okay so I’m pretty hung over and we watched ROTJ and 2am in a haze of booze. This is my life. But! What I mean is that he dies when like when a bunch of them are killed, and then after some more throne room antics they cut back to the pilots heading for the superstructure - I’m sure he’s alive again for a second. Then Wedge says “good shot Red 2” but it’s a Y-Wing?

your thoughts: Did Disney kill star wars because it sounds like they did with the last jedi solo and resistance.

Something doesn’t sit right with the idea that the Force is limited by the physical vessel through which it is channeled, at least where the light side is concerned. It is my understanding from the OT that the limiting factor in any feat of the non-Dark Side Force is the belief of the acolyte, with training as a way to allow for greater belief. Luminous beings are we, after all, not this crude matter.

The Dark Side, on the other hand, may very well have some physical cost, as both of the Dark Side users in the OT were either horribly mutilated or clearly insane.

This is one reason why Luke’s death is so inexplicable to me.

Yes luminous beings, aka the soul or the spirit. The crude matter is what died. I admit that it feels more “correct” that the bad guys feel ill effects more than the good guys, but there are no real rules beyond what is shown. In theory the “quicker, faster” dark path is damaging in comparison to the more disciplined method. But there’s nothing to say that using the greatest powers when the body is already old shouldn’t have side effects. It’s all vague enough to work for me (well OT and ST anyway).

It’s been established that exerting your Force powers too much could be potentially lethal…

I guess what your saying is dependant on whether or not your personal cannon includes the sequel trilogy. If yes then cool but for me this is not possible. Yoda states that using the force is a matter of will, not physical strength.

LUKE
Master, moving stones around is one thing. This is totally different.

YODA
No! No different! Only different in your mind. You must unlearn what you have learned.

Luke would never die from using the force as you cant die from willpower. If my will was that I was a billionaire, I wouldn’t die from it.

Uh not really. Yoda says the ability comes from belief in yourself but clearly exerts physical energy after lifting the ship. You have to have faith in the power, but the power is still energy running through your physical body.

… how do you develop characters? By giving them screen time. You could argue that he should have had more development in RO-

That’s a bingo.

I still don’t understand what you’re trying to say between this post and the one I was replying to in the post you just quoted. He didn’t get enough development in one ensemble movie, therefore he shouldn’t be allowed to be in a TV series? Why not?

Because a movie should stand on its own merits. Like the prequels supposedly being propped up by the Clone Wars show, it doesn’t “fix” the original problem.

Here’s the HUGE gamble Disney is making:

Right now, the only thing I’m really looking forward to regarding Star Wars is Rian Johnson’s SW Trilogy, after all Johnson has earned my full trust with TLJ. I wish I could say I’m looking forward to The Mandalorian, but I don’t have Disney+.

Can anyone create a whole new SW experience that is still , … well, Star Wars?

There is no guarantee of success. Will mediocrity be enough? It’s the only way the film franchise can continue long-term so they’ll invest hugely in this while exploiting all other avenues to milk the franchise (TV, theme parks, comics, etc.).

Oh, in my opinion Rian Johnson is the wrong guy to do this next piece of work given the divisive reaction to his only entry. Need a uniter rather than someone always looking to subvert expectations.

JokerRulez

I don’t get why TLJ is so divisive.

TFA was such a huge letdown I had no expectations in regards to the following episode, and in fact I fully expected TLJ to be a remake of TESB in the same way TFA is a remake of the first SW. Once a friend confirmed it wasn’t like that I was genuinely excited, went to see the movie, and once the credits started rolling, left the cinema with a sense of euphoria.

I don’t think Johnson was trying to subvert expectations, he was trying to come up with the best story he could write and direct, which he did brilliantly.

But there’s your audience division right there: people that thought TFA was a lame rehash and people that loved TFA because it fed into their self importance as fans. RO did the same thing. Then TLJ came along and did it’s own thing and that part of the fandom lost their minds because it stopped telling them they matter.
