What's your take on Emperor Palpatine being brought back for The Rise of Skywalker?
Time

They had the opportunity:
A) to expand on Snoke and write some proper lore
B) to expand on the “Force Dyad” and write some proper lore
C) to show Kylo as a truly broken figure who gets worse with the higher rank
Instead it’s basically wasted and feels like a sequel to movie that doesn’t exist. I mean Palpatine could have been involved too in some guise. There was a chance to finally explain the dumb super weapons and the state galactic politics. But this all requires a competent screenwriter.

I saw Annie Hall was on amazon Prime so I thought I’d give it a watch. This dreck beat Star Wars as best picture in 1977? WTF!?

It was so awful I couldn’t finish it. Turned it off after about 20 or 30 mins. And that was being generous. I wanted to stop after about 10 mins but tried to give it the benefit of the doubt.

But geez. It’s basically a pathetic, miserable man being pathetic and miserable and making everyone around him miserable too. What was wrong with people that they would vote for this trash over Star Wars?

lolno.
Star Wars should have won, but.

Yeah.

Uhuh.

And yes I also think it’s Tan-tiv.

Reasoning Behind Changes from Release to Release
Time

I’ve heard that before, and I think it’s clear that Lucas’s on financing tactics are to blame at least partly; he wanted to test out the CGI and also make money to fund TPM. What makes zero sense are all the later differences over time, particularly when some changes like Luke’s scream in ESB went back to the old version. The sad truth is that he’s probably just an obsessive old control freak, and this is his way of being involved in “his movies” after the other really creative minds have been forced out.

You may think the prequels are irredeemably bad and get angry whenever someone mentions them

They are, but I don’t.

My point is to tell a compelling new story you need to start with what works (the OT) and be as vague about everything else as possible (which they were to some extent). Everything else is entirely debatable since PT fans will hate anything that doesn’t continue the Anakin as Space Jesus plot which was supposedly a central idea. If I got angry about any of this I might have the energy to go way off topic, but again I don’t

The balance idea never made a lot of sense considering that anyone at any time might choose to become a dark Jedi. The hubris of the old council overlooking the rise of Palpatine had to happen somehow of course, but the PT just feels contrived and makes them look like a bunch of old stoners (even before all those parodies). Beyond all that Chosen One plots are just the worst. TLJ at least did a reasonable job of look at the golden age with a sceptical eye, but even mentioning that period or any PT stuff was probably a mistake. At least the ST did something with the idea that the Force is just a natural energy field that exists in weird evil trees, creepy basements, sea caves, or whatever.
