<strong>The Mandalorian</strong> - a general discussion thread - * <em><strong>SPOILERS</strong></em> *
Time

It did the bare minimum, it was OK. I think everyone was expecting more twists and more elements from earlier in the story. It felt like things had been cut and the running time was certainly short. It felt rushed. Like what happened to the silly plate armour Grogu was wearing? Or the dinosaurs they captured? Amongst others.

Star Wars novels and comics review thread

Well that was brief. But satisfying. Oddly enough the dialogue between Fett and Kast has been in my head since the 1990s when it was in the SW magazine. The ‘you’re nobody’ bit should have been the kind of thing that Mando said to Gideon before he died. What could have been eh.

Strange what sticks in your brain for 25 years. Why does the name Jaster Mereel still exist in my mind but I can’t remember where I put my wallet? Anyway I might find a few online copies of Dark Empire or the Thrawn trilogy.

If you see news about it on a general outlet that lets the readers give ‘reactions’ there are a lot of thumbs down over SW in general lately. It’s impossible to say what the far reaching vibes are because what we usually see is ultra hyped Celebration types or ultra jaded social media types. Personally I don’t care but I would wait until it’s been released to see how it goes.

What do you think of The Prequel Trilogy? A general discussion.

From my experience, having lived years in both the United States and abroad, having attended conventions in multiple countries and all, Prequel reception is way, way more positive if you’re not from an English speaking country.

Dubbing in some nuance and gravitas would help a lot of the characters in the PT… just like those fanedits that changed Jar-Jar into an alien language and gave him intelligent lines.

Spielberg talks his ET editing regret

I should have never messed with the archives of my own work, and I don’t recommend anyone do that. All our movies are a kind of a signpost of where we were when we made them, what the world was like, and what the world was receiving when we got those stories out there. So I really regret having that out there.

Someone make sure he talks to George about this…

God I forgot about the way the space battle which just… vanished off camera. Where was the fleet again? How are the cannons being operating without gun crews? How does a TIE pilot enter the Interceptor like that? I’d love to see more detail on things like how these ships work, what goes on inside a TIE Bomber exactly, or some new detail. But there was nothing new here.

You’re right it was boring. Not a single betrayal or surprise cameo? Not even another post credits tease! I mean these are basics rather than serious good additions and they didn’t use any of them. Weird. Weirder still this feels like the end but they’ve said another two seasons are written already. I’m not playing this weekly game again, wake me when some full shows are ready to binge.

The only real sign that some time has elapsed isn’t Luke, it’s Han and Leia. That whole ‘I don’t trust Lando’ scene, which was famously changed to feel less hostile, is different from their attitudes on Hoth. Their behaviour says a lot. Beyond that they say 3PO was gone too long to have gotten himself lost, but that’s vague.

That being said… Luke’s vision of his friends in pain is the future. How far into the future? Who knows. Nobody grows hair or washes in these movies. How much food is on the ship? Where do they dump waste material? It’s just a movie.

The idea that travelling through hyperspace is instant sometimes and sometimes not is a minor problem. But it’s not one that needs to be addressed. Certainly not in the current era of movie writing that’s for sure.

A '<strong>New Republic</strong>' era film (live action movie by Dave Filoni) - a general discussion thread

Channel72 said:

It sounds like Filoni kind of mourns the EU to a certain extent, but maybe I’m just reading something into his statement that isn’t there. I get the sense he appreciates the EU stories and wants to make a movie that tells some reworked version of one or more EU stories. But I guess he also wants to combine it with his Rebels plot lines.

It’s interesting to reflect on the fact that a live action retelling of most of the early EU stories from the 1990s was not possible for over two decades, since all those stories focus on the original cast who had aged beyond the roles. But now because we’re “living in the future”, those stories can actually be told in live action using deep-fake recreations of the OT cast. It’s certainly uncharted territory. So far, CGI recreations (and later deep-fakes) have been used for minor roles or cameos. But the day will soon come I’m sure when a starring role is entirely a deep-fake. A lot of people find this idea disturbing, but it will inevitably become more and more common as time goes on.

I think it’s more calculated than that. Why write new characters when you can use old ones? Less risk and more brand recognition. A mixture of TCW cameos and old characters from books is potent stuff. Is the Thrawn trilogy really the place to start now, or is it just a logical next step in their methodical mining of the old EU? As for deepfakes… yeah I have a bad feeling about this.

I liked Thrawn in Rebels so I hope it all pans out. But I admit for how expensive this all must be they’ve struggled to get eight episodes out of such a lack of material. Perhaps it’s because this is the first time I bothered watching it weekly. It doesn’t seem to be designed for a real time broadcast format and probably should have just been released all together.
