A quote from George Lucas himself" "Now we'll find out where people really wanted the original or whether they wanted the improved version. It will all come out in the end." Plus, this is George Lucas we're talking about here. The man seems to have a genetic inability to release only one version of his films. Remaster OOT discs with 5.1/2.0/mono=more money. I highly, highly, highly doubt that we won't see a high quality release of the films in the future, probably the near future with the 30th anniversary so close at hand. Then, maybe, one Lucas sees that there is a market for the version of his films which the majority of fans actually like, then maybe, at some point before the end of time, we can see a high-quality release of the original release of THX 1138 so that I can finally see the movie.

I agree- I've said before that this DVD release is a sign that he's starting to soften. Remember 1995- "ONE LAST TIME!" Well, that wasn't 100% true, now was it? I think eventually the OOT will be PROPERLY released- but probably not for the 30th anniversary. I'm betting it will get a blu-ray or hd-dvd release several years down the line, when one of the formats has caught on.

I think this September DVD release will be HUGE! It's going to blow Fox/Lucas away as to how many people still love and want the OOT. It will just give that much more reason for the OOT to be presented properly in a few years.

I hope so. But I want to see it on standard DVD as well as HD.

He comes across as a bitter, resentful man.

That's what I though too. LFL's PR stuff (Oh, gee, how fun. I haven't been requesting these version out of novelty value or for my health. It's because I prefer them.) seemed slapped together, but Lucas's comments were far, far more revealing. It's almost as if he takes people's dislike of the SEs as a personal insult.

I agree. If we want to be heard, we need to turn up the volume.

Lucas appears to have been deaf for the past 20 years or so. Now, it seems, that he's gotten a cheap hearing aid. Let's help him get a better one.

I doubt that he appreciates what has been done to his work. If anyone can find contacts for big-time Hollywoodites like Spielberg, Sam Raimi, etc., the post them too. It's time to take the battle to Lucas.

They are simply labeled as STAR WARS TRILOGY.

Remember, the originals "don't exist," so that is what Lucas wants. You talk about the power of money (Have you ever seen Steven Sommers's Deep Rising? "If the cash is there, we don't care."). Well, a remastered OOT=money. George Lucas has become many things. Frustrating? Almost unbearably. Inconsistent? Oh yes. Stubborn? To the point of being ridiculous. But stupid? No. You couldn't convince me for a second that he is. The man made 6 1/2 hours of film into a multi-billion dollar franchise. He's a remarkably shrew businessman. Lucas has not said no with this release. He has said maybe. He has had to be dragged kicking and screaming into this, but we've gone from the original versions "not existing" and being "rough drafts" to "Now we'll find out whether people really wanted the original or whether they wanted the improved versions. It will all come out in the end. Heck, we're getting mentioned in Clerks II, a major mainstream motion picture. Star Wars, in its original form, meant a lot to people. You can fool some of the people some of the time, but you can't fool all of the people all of the time. Even with threat of a mass boycott, I'm betting that the OOT discs will sell well enough. And Lucas will then know. If he and LFL put our a high quailty restored/remastered OOT in crisp anamorphic widescreen with 5.1/2.0/mono sound in an expensive package (like say, the 30th anniversary boxed set that we all pretty much know will come out), that people like me would pay through the nose for it.

The original prints still exist on the internet and on fan-made DVDs. You can't kill Star Wars by not releasing it on DVD. It's grown far beyond that.

Exactly. Lucas is shooting himself in the foot here. "The originals don't exist..." until he needs more money. A substandard release? THX. The best sound. The best picture. He can't have this both ways. The bouns material thing was his loophole, and it hasn't worked. Lucas hasn't said "no" with this release. He's said "maybe." We're gaining ground. Let's not give up now.

The Lion The Witch and The Wardrobe: 1979 Animated VS. 2005 Live-Action

I thought that they were aiming more for Harry Potter, to tell the truth. LOTR is such a dark and mature story, whereas HP and CON are much more deceptively kid-oriented. LOTR is dark and gloomy, whereas CON and the first part of HP deal with much lighter material. I thought that TLTWATW had the same sort of vibe as E.T. in that it tried to put childhood into the context of something fantastical. Disney's presence was surprisingly rather sparse in places as compared to their interference in other works. There are six more films for the franchise to find its voice, but I think that Adamson was aiming much for the charm of a Ray Harrhausen picture or The Thief of Bagdad than LOTR or HP.

Since we have a choice, it doesn't really matter. And the use of Neil Gaiman to write the English script for Princess Mononoke was a masterstroke.

I don't like everything he does but there's no doubt he's a fine director who really knows his stuff.

Question: if Lucarse couldn't have Steven S. direct Jedi, how did he keep having him for the other Indy flicks? Because those still have the credits in the beginning? Sheesh, I've never understood why the credits thing is such a big deal, anyway. Who wants to read a bunch of stupid names while the movie's starting? Save it all for the end, when it's just music and no picture. lol

I'd sure like to read a book about the making of SW that didn't have any official Lucarse propaganda. That would be really interesting.

Perhaps in some ways Lucas got angy at Hollywood and took things out on his fans. Spielberg seems to inspire a great deal of debate on both sides of the chasm, both from those who think that he is an overrated, sentimental, manipulative, and overhyped hack, and those like myself who love his unrivaled skills at crafting set pieces, manipulating audiences, creating sheer cinema. Love him or hate him, he's certainly influential and even his weakest films are superbly crafted.

Isn't doing any remastering yet. At this point, most things will look better than the official releases. LFL won't be able to stand that for long, and we'll get a great DVD release of the OOT. I hope.

I agree exactly.

The main thing I'm looking at this as is the timing of it all. It makes no sense to me to release the never to be sold again OOT in september when next year will be the 30th Anniversery. If this is the only version we'll see of the OOT on DVD, wouldn't he wait a few months later and release them on the 30th Anni? I think we could see a new uber box set (I'm hoping the PT and 2004's will be fixed along with the anamorphic widescreen format OOT) next year. One can dream anyway.

God willing. I keep hoping that too. Cross all your fingers. Like I said, money talks.

Can you image how awesome that would have been?

I'm sure it would have been great, but I'm one of those people who happens to love Jedi the way it is (the 1983 version, that is). I know a lot of people don't care for it, but I've never had any complaints about it.

And he calls them bonus material and wants us to kiss his ass for releasing them this way.

Outside of his comments about findout whether or not people really wanted these versions (no George, we've just been spending tons of money on LDs instead of buying cheap DVDs for our health), Lucas has hardly said anything about the situation at all. Yet.

I believe the official line was that Fox wanted to make a new transfer of The Abyss, but James Cameron declined and said the current one (presumably from the LD) was fine. Actually, this happened again with the Alien Quadrilogy set. Fox did new transfers of every film except Aliens because Cameron said he was happy with the old, grainy transfer from the first DVD release (which was anamorphic by the way).

Perhaps Cameron simply does not want to take the time. Why not get some other help? Van Ling made the T2 Extreme disc look great. Ah, well. I'm sure that there will be new transfers somewhere down the road, proboably soon given the fact Cameron is finally back in the director's chair. And the Aliens disc doesn't look too bad. It's not up to scratch with reference quality material, but it looks better than many DVDs out there. Did you ever have the misfortune of seeing the abysmal transfer of The Wild Bunch on WBs first disc. I gained whole new appreciation for the film and it masterful cinematography upon see the new disc.

I Believe that he is making more changes for the 2007 set.

The CGI Gollum from LOTR looks more realistic than that Yoda. Its funny how Luca$h always wants the SW movies to be the most technologically sophisticated films on the planet, but the PT doesn't even surpass the effects work of a low budget Ray Harryhausen film (which are superb by the way).

I agree wholeheartedly on both counts. Plus, Gollum was an actual character with a complete backstory who interacted with others, developed, and existed to serve the narrative. Harryhausen's work may look dated now, but now only does it have soul and imaginative verve, like original OOT effects did.

Miyazaki's movies I've seen:

Spirited Away
Princess Mononoke
Kiki's Delivery Service
Howl's Moving Castle

All excellent films, though Mononoke is by far the best. It's a very powerful film. And it's the only one of the four with a good dub. In fact, its the best dub I've ever heard. It's excellent, so you don't have to read subtitles on that one.

I enjoy Disney's dubs to an extent, but what really impresses me is their presentation on the DVDs. The alternate angles present the films not only in the original language, but even with the original text in Japanese on the opening and closing credits! Wow. Both version on a DVD in crisp anamorphic widescreen with superb booming sound interpolated from the original tracks in both languages. High quailty picture and sound on both versions. Take notes George. Miyazaki-san actually made Disney sign an agreement that they would not edit even a single frame.
