HARRY POTTER AND THE GOBLET OF FIRE
Time
I fear M. Night Shamalyn becoming involved in the franchise. "I see death eaters." I agree about the explanation of the wands connecting, but it's kind of like what happened with the whole secret-keeper/Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot, and Prongs subplot in Prisoner. It proably had to go for time. As Columbus so painfully proved with the finale of Chamber, having character just stand there and talk is difficult to pull off, 12 Angry Men aside.

Not to defend Lucas too much, but it seems like when you start changing directors in a series, it ends up bad. See Batman and Robin, Superman III and Superman IV. Yes, the prequels could of been much better, but they also could of been much, much worse.

Yes, but Tim Burton was replaced by Joel Schumacher. Look what happend when Chris Nolan took over. It is important to have a good director.

I'm sure it would have been better. I mean, there's already proof. The Empire Strikes Back. Not directed by Lucas. Better. Best.

Coincidence, I'm sure .

Samurai <-> gunslinger <-> gangster <-> jedi.

That's the whole idea behind the Joesph Campbell thing, isn't it?

Having only just found out about this when us europeans are just being told that these will also be available, I do have some comment on the press release that I read on this very site. It is indeed very insightful into how the american mega-corporations choose to conduct their bussiness.
People don't seem to realise that they are being misled by the PR-departments. Not their fault since PR gets played like a fiddle anyway....

Do we really want to accept that the trilogy that has probably grossed more worldwide than anything ever will never be released in the way that it was meant to be enjoyed. People talk about the artistic rights of George Lucas, which in my humble opinion he wavered when he decided to release Episode I, but he has to accept that it is no longer his vision but a part of our cultural heritage.
Everywhere you go there's always somebody who, in any situation, can make at least a quick reference to Star Wars. I grew up as the generation that only got to see it on tv or video, now we got our moment with the Special Editions.

If only he had stopped there. Would Rembrandt have changed the "Nachtwacht" just because he could make more money by repainting it every few years??? I don't think so... Artistic vision is not to be found in the creator, but in the beholder. It was generally accepted that most artists were only recognized after their deaths, GL shows now what a chaos would have ensued if this had not been so....

In closing, I will leave you a forbidding feeling that sometime in the not too distant future, Lucasfilm ltd. will release an ultimate edition box set comprising of all six movies including the original versions we all loved on their very own discs. Probably even accompanied by an extra disc for a least each trilogy or maybe even one per movie.....

As long as I have my VCR I can enjoy the movie that means something to the arts.....

Thanks for joining us sir! And don't worry. This proably isn't the last we'll see of these films on DVD. We'll get a high quality release eventually, possibly soon. I think that the issue is not only Lucas's choice to change things, but his desire to pretend that the original are rough drafts that no longer exist. Even if Leonardo Da Vinci wanted alter the Mona Lisa if he were still with us, the fact the original has been an ispiration to artists for generations would ensure that it would never be lost forever. The same is true of the OOT. Lucas is slowly relenting. We now must wait.

A quote from George Lucas himself" "Now we'll find out where people really wanted the original or whether they wanted the improved version. It will all come out in the end." Plus, this is George Lucas we're talking about here. The man seems to have a genetic inability to release only one version of his films. Remaster OOT discs with 5.1/2.0/mono=more money. I highly, highly, highly doubt that we won't see a high quality release of the films in the future, probably the near future with the 30th anniversary so close at hand. Then, maybe, one Lucas sees that there is a market for the version of his films which the majority of fans actually like, then maybe, at some point before the end of time, we can see a high-quality release of the original release of THX 1138 so that I can finally see the movie.

I agree- I've said before that this DVD release is a sign that he's starting to soften. Remember 1995- "ONE LAST TIME!" Well, that wasn't 100% true, now was it? I think eventually the OOT will be PROPERLY released- but probably not for the 30th anniversary. I'm betting it will get a blu-ray or hd-dvd release several years down the line, when one of the formats has caught on.

I think this September DVD release will be HUGE! It's going to blow Fox/Lucas away as to how many people still love and want the OOT. It will just give that much more reason for the OOT to be presented properly in a few years.

I hope so. But I want to see it on standard DVD as well as HD.

He comes across as a bitter, resentful man.

That's what I though too. LFL's PR stuff (Oh, gee, how fun. I haven't been requesting these version out of novelty value or for my health. It's because I prefer them.) seemed slapped together, but Lucas's comments were far, far more revealing. It's almost as if he takes people's dislike of the SEs as a personal insult.

I agree. If we want to be heard, we need to turn up the volume.

Lucas appears to have been deaf for the past 20 years or so. Now, it seems, that he's gotten a cheap hearing aid. Let's help him get a better one.

If anyone can find the contact info for Phil Tippet, the gang at KNB FX, Rob Bottin, etc., then post them. Or better yet, Rick Backer, who actually worked on the films. I doubt that he appreciates what has been done to his work. If anyone can find contacts for big-time Hollywoodites like Spielberg, Sam Raimi, etc., the post them too. It's time to take the battle to Lucas.

I know someone in contact with uber-producer Jerry Bruckhiemer. Perhaps he could help with Hollywood contacts. I'm going to attempt to attain info on how to contact John Williams soon.

They are simply labeled as STAR WARS TRILOGY.

Remember, the originals "don't exist," so that is what Lucas wants. You talk about the power of money (Have you ever seen Steven Sommers's Deep Rising? "If the cash is there, we don't care."). Well, a remastered OOT=money. George Lucas has become many things. Frustrating? Almost unbearably. Inconsistent? Oh yes. Stubborn? To the point of being ridiculous. But stupid? No. You couldn't convince me for a second that he is. The man made 6 1/2 hours of film into a multi-billion dollar franchise. He's a remarkably shrew businessman. Lucas has not said no with this release. He has said maybe. He has had to be dragged kicking and screaming into this, but we've gone from the original versions "not existing" and being "rough drafts" to "Now we'll find out whether people really wanted the original or whether they wanted the improved versions. It will all come out in the end. Heck, we're getting mentioned in Clerks II, a major mainstream motion picture. Star Wars, in its original form, meant a lot to people. You can fool some of the people some of the time, but you can't fool all of the people all of the time. Even with threat of a mass boycott, I'm betting that the OOT discs will sell well enough. And Lucas will then know. If he and LFL put our a high quailty restored/remastered OOT in crisp anamorphic widescreen with 5.1/2.0/mono sound in an expensive package (like say, the 30th anniversary boxed set that we all pretty much know will come out), that people like me would pay through the nose for it.

The original prints still exist on the internet and on fan-made DVDs. You can't kill Star Wars by not releasing it on DVD. It's grown far beyond that.

Exactly. Lucas is shooting himself in the foot here. "The originals don't exist..." until he needs more money. A substandard release? THX. The best sound. The best picture. He can't have this both ways. The bouns material thing was his loophole, and it hasn't worked. Lucas hasn't said "no" with this release. He's said "maybe." We're gaining ground. Let's not give up now.

The Lion The Witch and The Wardrobe: 1979 Animated VS. 2005 Live-Action

I thought that they were aiming more for Harry Potter, to tell the truth. LOTR is such a dark and mature story, whereas HP and CON are much more deceptively kid-oriented. LOTR is dark and gloomy, whereas CON and the first part of HP deal with much lighter material. I thought that TLTWATW had the same sort of vibe as E.T. in that it tried to put childhood into the context of something fantastical. Disney's presence was surprisingly rather sparse in places as compared to their interference in other works. There are six more films for the franchise to find its voice, but I think that Adamson was aiming much for the charm of a Ray Harrhausen picture or The Thief of Bagdad than LOTR or HP.

Since we have a choice, it doesn't really matter. And the use of Neil Gaiman to write the English script for Princess Mononoke was a masterstroke.
