People who want to make money. Movies are still an art form and I've seen films that encase the filmmaker's artistic skills in commercial packaging. There is also just such a thing as good commercial filmmaking (James Cameron, Peter Jackson, Steven Speilberg, Chris Nolan, etc.)/ Sadly, the answer to everything seems to be money.
Depends on a lot of things.
Now, quick - who produced Brokeback Mountain?

I think Mike nailed it on that one.

Really? I was under the impression that producers can be much more meddling nowadays.

Great film, BTW. Yes, but notice, that many filmakers like David Lynch, who make works that are, shall we say different, have to find producers or exec producers willing to gamble on their ideas, or find a production partner (i.e., Tarantino and Lawrence Bender) who will work with them. Heck, look at Rick McCallum. Lucas picked him so that RM could pull all the strings to that GL could make the movie that he wanted.

As for Dumbledore being dead...well, that's too bad. I just want more explanation surrounding the circumstances and the overall closure of the Potterverse as a whole. I'm sure that we'll get the latter.
I wonder what will happen to Malfoy?

proving once AGAIN that a year can't go by where Luca$ needs to rape the fans wallets
Have they put out a DVD product per year since 01?
Even though it says the above was written in March 10, 2006 ('07 info on May 10), I think it is highly, HIGHLY suspect that they kept the March update around and linked it with the more recent '07 one. Sure it can be argued that the sentence above is talking about the 09/12 release, but LFL had more than enough time to update since that announcement. Since they have not, I say they didn't because there are even more releases and "rarities" on the way.

Wishful thinking? I don't know. Judging by the bonus disc-less release, it takes a bit more than new changes to get the fans excited, and I think that most people have had it and just want to own a good release. I think this now comes down to how far LFL are willing to go. Will the 30th anniversary boxed set sell well? Sure, it has the Star Wars name attached to it. But will it sell really, really well? Only if it has something to entice the fansbase in it. The question is whether or not Lucas is willing to put aside his ego and if LFL have the balls to put their money where their mouths are. Pardon my bluntness.

Oh, and as of 08/23/06 the discs are selling better, and SW is now in the top 100. It's starting to look like these discs will not have the earth-shattering sales that we all hoped for, but will nonetheless set moderately well.

I just read an interview of his where he said the original Star Wars was only 25% of what he wanted. If that's true, why should he go back and fuck up an already good film with his additions? He should have just made all the movies brand new and not bothered to change the old. Then his Saga would truly tie together. Though he doesn't like Star Wars enough for that kind of commitment I'd guess. That would be too much work for our lethargic filmaker.
Otherwise, you make a good point about how Lucas is now stuck in a problem of his own making. If he turns off a lot of his older fans with his half-assed approach to absolutely everything, then that's the way it will be. Star Wars will become some cheap kiddy franchise that most people will grow out of by the time they're 20 and that's all it will ever be from then on. Then Star Wars will die unless preservationists who know the truth about the series have some say in the matter.

If only for its historical importance, I don't think that Star Wars will ever die. The OOT is more than good enough to speak for itself.

Hyperspace Reveals the Secrets of Star Wars 07
May 10, 2006
Fans are already primed to make next year a Star Wars year to remember. 2007 marks the 30th anniversary of the beloved saga, and already there are whispers of possible events that will commemorate that milestone. But what hasn't yet been talked about is the biggest entertainment event of the year: a major addition to the Star Wars mythos.
It begins now. As with the earliest glimpses of Episode III, Hyperspace will be the first place to get a look at the secrets 2007 holds. A new image series, rich with explosive and intriguing concept art, is your first look at next year's biggest Star Wars surprise. Hyperspace members, click here to see it.
You can see it only in Hyperspace, and this is just the start. If you're not yet a member of Hyperspace: The Official Star Wars Fan Club, then sign up today!
And then on this page the 6th bullet point:
Exclusive new videos, including glimpses into forthcoming Star Wars DVD releases and other rarities unearthed from the Lucasfilm archives.

Upcoming DVD releaes? But I thought that this one was George's "original vision." As I've stated on numerous occasions, I firmly believe that Lucas is anything but stupid, and that he knows releasing a remastered OOT on the boxed set would mean that people like me would pay through the nose to get it. He's one of the most brilliant businessmen that the earth has ever known. The Lucasfilm archives my...more like "Now that we have seen that there is demand for a remastered OOT we might consider it."
Mightn't that be because Lowry was rushed and given thirty days to do the work instead of what Spielberg did, which was actually take a little time and effort on the Indiana Jones boxed set. Not only does the 04 set not contain the Star Wars movies like it advertises, but the so-called remaster was rushed. If you want that to be the definitive version George, then make it the definitve version.
The special "surprise" is probably just that tv series.

Which brings us to the once again catch 22. Lucas wants to see if the OUT DVD's sell. If they don't, then there's no reason to include them in the rumored archival edition of the saga. If of course they do sell well, then he'll more than likely include an anamorphic and restored transfer within the archival edition box set, proving once AGAIN that a year can't go by where Luca$ needs to rape the fans wallets.
I was thinking that too, but it sounds too good to be true. Then there is the case of these DVDs. Judging from what figures are looking like now, it appears that sales will be good, but not great. I think that now, our best option appears to be prayer.
If LFL would release the product that I want to buy I wouldn't hesitate for a microsecond to purchase it.
Yes, we can. And hope springs eternal, hopefully.
Well, when compared directly to the 70mm film cels I've collected over the years, the DE/Faces colors are much more accurate that the '04 colors.

The fact of the matter is, Lucasfilm is aware of the rabid fan preservation community and this is their way of stemming the tide, which, as we all know, won't work.
If this release had been a high-quality release, then it would have. This release seems to have done the exact opposite of what Lucas wanted, in that instead of ending the whole situation (which it would have done had these DVD releaes not sucked), it's blown the doors open on the whole situation.
Sadly, I'm coming to agree. The most pervese part is, if there is a remasted OOT in it, then LFL stand to regain me as a fan and make more money, but until such a time, I am done with Star Wars.
One can hope.

The sad thing is many years ago, I would always be hyped to hear anything newsworthy of SW, via the movies, video release. Now it just comes down to one question: Does it contain a remastered O-OT version in the boxset? If the answer is no, then I don't care George.

Dark Jedi never claimed to have made a film. The FACES set was directed by George Lucas, Irvin Kershner, and Richard Marquand. I don't recall Dark Jedi, or anyone else on these forums, ever claiming that they made the films. Except Geroge Lucas, of course, as he apparently did all of the work and Kershner, Kurtz, Hamill, Marquand, Ford, Fisher, and the thousand of craftsman and technicians who's work no longer exists because Lucas feels that it is unimportant were just figureheads. But no one on these forums, to the best of my knowledge, has ever claimed that they made the films. I certainly haven't. I fail to see why not having made them means that we cannot have high quality releases of them as they were originally released.
