Where do I go from here as a SW fan?

Why is everything an "attack on the fans"? Seriously where do people come up with this stuff? Like he's twirling his handlebar mustace as he watches people walk out of Best Buy.

You mistunderstand me. There is a difference between "attack on the fans" and "caring shit about the fans". The former one implies emotional involvement, while the latter does not. I don´t sense any emotional involvement towards the fans regarding the 2004SE and the OOT release. Only marketing.

I guess this goes back to the percentage of fans that care about not having the OOT. Personally I don't think it was that high... if it was, then the last release would've sold better.

I thought that it did sell well. It spent some time in Amazon.com's top ten. There is a significant number of individuals who want the OOT. Not everyone in the world, certainly, but many, many people.

See, George, This is how it's done ...

Especially after the Tom and Jerry fiaso. It took MAJOR balls on the part of WB to admit to and fix their mistake, and they deserve full credit for it.

An organization like this should have caught these errors before they were sold, and there's simply no excuse for such shoddy quality management. I'm very releived they're taking a step to rectify the mistake, but it's not the "right thing" in my book.

True, but they also could have ignored the problem completely. Instead they are fixing it. They deserve credit for that, even if the mistake should not have happened.

As far as I'm concerned, the right thing would be to recall the discs and issue corrected ones to retailers.

I'd imagine that eventually they will.

To this day, I have never purchased the Back to the Future set because I don't think it's my responsiblity to purchase a DVD, then call to have a replacement sent, and then wait for that replacement to arrive. Universal has, as far as I know, never issued corrected sets to retailers.

They did. I own them. Again, at least Universal admitted to the mistake and listen to criticism. No, it houldn't have happened. But the did go out of their way to fix it.

There is still hope. Those interested in politely making their feelings on the issue are advised to check out this contact list: http://www.theonering.net/perl/newsview/8/1164129588 (Why can't I get the blasted hyperlinks to work?). Flaming them with angry letters won't help, as I'm sure everyone here knows, but some intelligent constructive criticism would be good, and I know that TZers are up to it. Just FYI, in case anyone is interested. Cross your fingers. I'm not going to get my hopes up, but there's always a chance.

Well, so of us are Jackson fans, so watch it . Besides, it's odds on that they'd pick someone worse.

Ratner? Sadly, it's very possible.

And Beorn, Tiptp? Well, I'd love it if he was included, but like Bombadil, I'd understand if he had to go for pacing reasons.

If McKellan and the gang stick to their guns and that article is right and Jackson does come back and make a killer Hobbit movie, I'd be incredibly happy, but I'm not holding my breath. Still, miracles happen, so we can always hope.

I'm not sure he really wanted to make this film anyway. I'm beginning to think that this will never actually get made.

I'd rather it doesn't if he doesn't.

In general though, a new director wouldn't be bad at all. Someone who could appreciate the original story more. The Hobbit is the best book of all time as far as I'm concerned.

He appreciates the original story, it's his interpreations of it that I take issue with.

Yeah, a little more sarcasm from Spider-Man would be nice. They tend to overplay the woe-is-me thing.

True, but the guy's life does kinda suck.

Which is why he's sarcastic - using sarcasm as a defense mechanism against all the things in his life that suck.

A Spider-Man's Dawson's Creek... that thought disgusts me.

Bryce Dallas Howard looks awful with blonde hair.

It was a joke.

Looking forward to Spider-Man 3, but in a way I'm getting tired of the series already. I hate the fact that they seem to have postponed the resolution of the Harry Osborne storyline. They are dragging that out too long and need to resolve it. Also not sure how Venom will work out, but I have hope that it will be good.

I know how you feel. Bringing in Venom and Sandman just seems desperate, and hiring Topher "That 70s Show" Grace as Venom does not sit well with me.

Venom slaps Spider-Man on the back of the head: "DUMBASS!"

What do you think of the Prequel Trilogy? a general discussion thread

What I was saying about Mann was that I never felt as "into" his films, so speak. He's talented, no question. I've just always felt at arm's length. The characters develop, and it's not as if they are unsympathetic or anything. I just don't feel as excited or involved by one of his film as, say, a James Cameron or John Woo movie. I sort feel like I'm watching a movie. When I said style-over-substance, I was thnking of Collateral. You're right, he's very talented. I just find Mann a bit hard to approach. But there's not questioning his techincial skill. You're right, though, my calling him style-over-substance was rather ignorant on my part .

I don't know, though. I think he may have shot himself in the foot with the oversaturation of the Star Wars market. For the 20th, he had managed to nicely bring Star Wars back into the mainstream but not overdoing it, so that when he announced the special editions and theatrical re-releases, everybody jumped on the bandwagon. But for the 30th, we just finished years of the prequel trilogy as well as ad infinitum releases of the original trilogy. It's not exactly the best time for a "revivial."

...but this is exactly my argument in a way: it is because of oversaturation that he had to rope OUT fans back in and get them to buy once this year, and buy the better product again next year; it was a win-win for him because he got OUT fans interested again and also turned a whole group of people who have never been exposed to it, on to it.

After this I really do see SW fading into the background for good...this is the last hoorah so to speak...

I just think that it's been sufficently milked. SW is a good enough film to stand the test of time, its just time to let the franchise rest. And that's assuming wer get a better OOT next year, which I hope but doubt.

The Lord of the Rings (Films vs. the Books)

And I have to respectfully disagree about the extensive color timing done for Jackson's LotR. He got the colors he wanted that were simply not available in the actual photography, no matter how true to color it may have been. The example that comes most quickly to mind is the lush green of Hobbiton, which was simply not there during original photography.

So, with the tech toolbox now available, what's a filmmaker to do? Leave the drab green that 35mm film captured perfectly? Or render the color timing to result in beautiful green for the fantasy film?

As long as he leaves it that way. It's not like Jackson went mucking with the color after the release. He modified it to create what he wanted for the cut of the film.

Too many of the scenes lacked all sense of subtlety in the way movement was portrayed or in the way emotional reactions like pain or worry were portrayed.

Some worked beautifully; Lothlorien, the Black Gate, some of the Frodo/Sam stuff at the Cracks of Doom, Gimili's mourning in Moria, Gandalf's death the death of Theoden. Others were overblow, such as the Denethor stuff and the weird "Sauruman is possessing Theoden" thing.
