Will you buy the OOT again ?
Time
See, here's how I look at it, just like zombie84. Most people who bought the SE proably don't care which version they have. Most people who bought the OOT have what they want. What else is the to market? Of course, the most obvious thought is a remastered OOT. The other stuff which they have been sitting on may entice some people, but I doubt that it would be enough to make the set sell well. It's real simple: if Lucas really did care about his "vision," then he would have stuck to his guns and not released the OOT ever again, period. All evidence points to the "testing the waters theory," especially with his comment "Now we'll find out whether people really wanted the originals, or whether they wanted the improved versions. It will all come out in the end." I really do think that this set should have EVERYTHING, or else. I would be willing to be all of the gold in Fort Knox that LFL CAN in fact do what we want. But is Lucas's common sense and his desire to make money stronger than his ego? I just don't know. I would give anything in the world for y'all to be right. But it just seems to good to be true, and really, who knows what Lucasfilm will do anymore. I guess we can just hope and pray right now. You guys are all right. Lets just hope Lucasfilm realize it. Who knows anymore? Please God.

As for thought of it happening after Lucas passes away? Well, if that's the case, then I'd rather not get them. I mean seriously, I'd give almost anything in the world for these DVDs, but does a human being have to die just for me to get some discs? No thanks.

They are not going to announce it until probably february at least, so as not to dissuade the christmas/boxingday/new-years sales. Otherwise all those PT/OT/OOT disks I see on the shelves will continue to sit there instead of being bought twice.

I hope so, but a good release next year just seems too good to be true. I'd give almost anything for it, but I don't want to get my hopes up.

Wait for Celebration IV for the announcement.

Hope springs eternal.

If the OOT came out in high quality on DVD and HD, I would buy it for almost any price. Otherwise, I don't care anymore. Like I say, I'd give almost anything for y'all to be right about the "saga" boxed set. But I just don't want to get my hopes up and have them crushed again. All I can do is hope and pray. But yes, I would. I just hope that I can.

ANH screening with modelmaker Lorne Peterson...WHY ARE THEY SCREENING THE SE??

Yes, but would Lucas allow it? That's the clincher. And that was amusing. Thank you. I hope you're right.

"If" it's as in demand? "If"?!

Sales do seem to have dropped on the GOUT.

I'm guessing you don't really understand how large the Star Wars fanbase is.

I think that he does .

Even if the poeple who would like to own a high-quality, dedicated release of the theatrical versions comprise only a small minority of Star Wars fans, you're still talking about easy money.

Yes, but the quesiton is, will Lucas allow it? Is his hatred of the OOT stronger than his desire to make money? After, the kind of people whom he could market that too are the kind of people who would spend any amount of money on a boxed set with films that they don't want just to get the restored OOT. That's why the boxed set would be perfect and dovetail with all of the circumstantial evidence like the MTV interview, SW.com's "searching the archives" comment, the testing the waters theory, and what I just mentioned. I just don't want to get my hopes up and have them crushed, because I can't see it happening.

Of course, this assumes that George Lucas would give a shit enough to put his stamp of approval on something with effort and care put into it (which a dedicated, nerdy fanbase would require).

I think it's just a case of him giving the go-ahead for a restoration. He wouldn't have anything to do with it regardelss other than say whether or not it can be released.

DVD technology is capable of a lot, and the theatrical release of Star Wars and its two sequels deserve what that technology that can give us.

And we'll still probably have to fight for years of HD discs, if we get them at all .

Then you're fine by me. I just wonder if we'll ever get one. Hasn't the September DVD set sold reasonably well? I mean it was in Amazon.com's top ten for a while. I can't see LFL saying that there's no market for it. Not quite as big a market as some other things perhaps, but I'd imagine that there's a considerably large group of people who'd pay for a restored OOT DVD set. I don't imagine that LFL is financially hurting from this set . I just wonder if it'll come out while Lucas is alive, or while I am alive.

If the OOT comes out restored, then all will be fine . I hope that you are correct, though I wonder when? Really, that's all I want. I certainly don't hate Lucas. I'm sure he's a very nice man, and I wish him a long, happy, healthy life. I just want the OOT on a high-quality DVD so that I can watch it myself. That's all. Please don't attack me .

Maybe Lorne Peterson doesn't see digital enhancement as an insult to modelmakers.

Maybe he is mature enough to realize that it's just another tool to make movie magic with, and doesn't concern himself with this idea that some effects are insulting to other kinds of effects.

I think it's foolish of us to focus on one too strongly, because we don't knnow.

Do you have source? If you do, then that is interesting.

To paraphrase a line from Kurosawa: "Do-you-have-a-source?"

Here are some good Star Wars percentages not pulled completely out of fanboy ass.

http://www.rottentomatoes.com/news/comments/?entryid=197859

Now to say that that has no validity, but many critics panned The Shawshank Redemption, It's A Wonderful Life, andmany other classic films on their initial release. Similarly, Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers: The Movie did great box office at the time retrospectively and look at the critical concensus now. Doesn't necessarily mean anything, I'm just pointing it out.

I just pulled a random percentage WITH a source... as opposed to pulling a random percentage from thin air.

OK. I applaud you for it. Unfortunately, it is of no use to me .

I just don't get it. Plenty of things that artists came up with for SW was abandoned entirely before the final cut, yet just because you happened to see this stuff released originally, suddenly it's a huge insult to the artist for the director to make artistic decisions?

They knew that their work would not be included in the first place. That is different from having it replaced. But as I said, as we do not know anything about Peterson, this discussion is pointless.

Is anyone on this board near Santa Monica? This is a great opportunity for a little protest outside the theater. Nothing scary- just some fans in costumes with signs.

That'd be great, sans the the costumes. Civil proesting. Not that it would make a difference.

He wasn't slighted in any way, and the presence of CG does not take away from his work on the film.

Glad you are back Darth_Evil.

Some of his work is still I highly doubt that all of it is. We don't know if he's upset or not. So assumptions both sides are making are unsubstantiated.

In a latest bit of bullshit OOT-suppression, the American Cinemateque is screening Star Wars with Lorne Peterson, who was one of the chief modelmakers on the film and was responsible for many of the incredible craftsmanship and innovations the films created. Peterson will introduce the film and then be signing autographs for his new book on the ILM Modelshop, tracing the renowned modelshops early days in the 1970's and 80's.

But the Special Edition is being screened. Roughly 80% of the original groundbreaking, Oscar-winning modelwork is deleted.

Does this not bother anyone?

I am guessing the reason is because Lucasfilm has recalled all prints of the original 1977 ANH and does not lend out the OOT anymore--only the SE prints may be screened. I remember a similar incident where a university wanted to screen the film as part of its 1970's cinema classics class and only were offered the 1997 SE. The OOT dies a little once more.

If Lucas ever truly wanted to supress the OOT, then he wouldn't have allowed the recent release of it like he did in early September of this year.

The OOT we love is still there and going strong. The 1997 Special Editions I actually somewhat liked, while at the same time I don't want the OOT to be destroyed. It's not. It's still here.

For now.
