Lucas has won.

Your first statement makes the second incorrect.  According to you, Lucas won't do anything to stop a fan preservation, so the only thing holding a a fan preservation back is technological ability.  Which is something this community can learn in time.  If we can learn in time then that makes it possible for the fans to make a worthy preservation and since Lucas won't do anything about it.  C'est la vie.

I don't mean to be Debbie Downer Asshole

You do.  You're above contradiction proves it.  Embrace your Dark Side.  You generalfrevious and kenkraly200whatever should do a pod cast together.  Light Side, Dark Side, StarWarscide.  That would be great podcast/radio.

We can learn some of it in time, but as noted, there's just no way that we'll be able to create something on the level that a professional company would be able to do. Any fan preservations may preserve the films among the fans, but they'll hardly last and keep those version in the public consciousness for most people. Look at Amazon's bestsellers, the BR boxed set has skyrocketed back into the top ten for Christmas. Most people do no give a damn about the OOT, they'll just buy anything that say Star Wars on the label. I thought there'd come an oversaturation point, but obviously there won't. I've just finally decided to live in reality and accept the situation. RIP Star Wars. There's not just no evidence to the contrary.

I believe any of those will do. Definitely DVD2/DVD4

Maybe, and those are great deals, but I'm looking to be able to put any damn thing in the player and run it. So far my Phillips does that for DVD and VCD, but obviously not BR.

I doubt you're going to find ONE player that will play EVERYTHING, as well as being region-free.

Well, I think that the Oppo obviously will, but this looks like a tricky thing to navigate. I've found some reasonably priced ABC Region-Free Blu-Ray players on eBay, but whether they'll play VCDs, etc., I doubt and they probably wouldn't stream either, meaning I'd had to buy a Roku box or something, which means that when all is said and done, I'd have to spend a fair bit anyway. This is obviously a very complex thing, apparently after how easy making a DVD player go free was, they've made it so. There's evidently no easy answer. Sigh.

And, the purpose of this site is to petition GL to create a proper restoration for the originals, not force others to make their own due to his personal hubris.

If we beat him at his own game, then perhaps he'll be compelled to do something about it.

Even assuming we actually had the technological ability to do that, which is questionable, I doubt Lucas would care about our little niche. Most Star Wars stuff is sold to kids who don't give a damn about anything except action figures. Once we, the last generation who saw the OOT on video, die, it'll die with us.

Ziggy Stardust said:

Anyway, back on topic.

When do you guys think the next chance for the OOT to be released? Do you think it could happen if there was an individual release of the films?

There isn't one. We're done. Lucas has won. The 3-D releases making record-breaking money will be the final nail in the coffin that he needs to bury the OOT forever. We fought hard, first we got the GOUT, then we got...well, then we got nothing. That's it, we're done. I don't mean to be Debbie Downer Asshole, but the only light at the end of this tunnel is a train. Lucas doesn't want to do it, he won't. He owns it. There's a cash flow from the TV shows and 3-D releases, so even if he did want more money, it's covered so he wouldn't need the OOT.

It can't be coincidence that this guy has been posting lately while generalfrevious is nowhere to be seen.

I'm not him, I've just finally woken up to reality. I'm no one's sock, thank you. I've just finally seen sufficient evidence that the battle is lost.

There's close to 600 now. There was another "boycott" page on FB that got there a couple weeks before I put this one up, and they have a couple hundred more members, last I checked.

Unfortunately, it needs to be a LOT more than 600.

A LOT doesn't even begin to describe it. I don't think it could even make a dent with gong into the millions, sadly. How long did it take for it to accumulate 600? Maybe if it continues mathematically, it'll get bigger as it goes.

Theory on the 1997 "restoration".

I've often doubted the "SE footage cut into the O-neg" theory. Why would they cut clean, modern film stock together with 1970s stock?

Whatever the state of the O-neg, if Lucasfilm wanted to, they could most likely restore and reconstruct the original versions from the materials they have. I've said it before, I'll say it again: It's not that they *can't* do it, it's that they *won't*. It's not about money, because a Blu-ray release of a restored OOT would make back every penny of the costs of restoration.

The fact that they turned down an offer from Robert A. Harris to restore the original versions speaks volumes. I've even heard versions of the story that say that he offered to do it *for free*, and they still turned him down. I'm not sure if that part is true, but if it is, then it really *isn't* about money, it's literally because Lucas doesn't want the original versions to be restored.

Yes, and he owns them lock, stock, and barrel. Even if it is possible, Lucas won't do it and there's no one and nothing that can make him. Even if they were sure it'd make money, why would they when there's a massive cash flow coming in from the most successful genre TV series of all time and 3D rerelease coming?

It's interesting they didn't do the "digital copy" stuff with this release.

I have to maniacally laugh every time I read one of these articles predicting the death of physical media as we know it.

And if there's any annoying, meaningless, technological buzzword I've grown to despise in the past year, it's "the cloud"! ;)

What's "the cloud?"

And physical media or no physical media, it's just another nail in the OOT's coffin.

that's your opinion georgec.

Actually it's quite well-documented fact. Here are some great articles:

http://secrethistoryofstarwars.com/beyondgeorgelucas.html

http://secrethistoryofstarwars.com/conversationswithleighbrackett.html

http://herocomplex.latimes.com/2010/08/12/star-wars-was-born-a-long-time-ago-but-not-all-that-far-far-away-in-1972-filmmakers-george-lucas-and-gary-kurtz-wer/

Kurtz, Burtt, Tippet, they've all been making comments in the last year or so with subtle jabs at Lucas' greed and lack of integrity.

Lucas has taken the cheap, lazy route with giving SW the best treatment and his lies continue to grow. I can't blame him, as many SW fans are self-loathing and will buy his products even if they disagree with their content/quality. Lucas has many SW fans by the nuts.

I think it's mostly the kids. Lets face it, most kids don't care what version they're watching and most parents buy them floods of tie-in stuff to see the kids smile. What're OOT fans going to do, go to parents and say "Hey, I know it makes your kid happy, but stop supporting revisionist history?" You can hardly blame them if they'd rather see a smiling child. There's no way we're going to make a dent in the multibillion dollar franchise. I've just decided to stop deluding myself. We fought against a giant, and we got crushed. Game set. Matched.

So, I wonder how many of these BD sets have sold now? I wonder if the sales have dropped significantly since the first week of release.

When I was going through the flyers in this Sunday's newspaper, I didn't see one single ad for the set- not in Target, Wal-Mart, Best Buy, etc. You'd think they'd still be pushing it since it's only been out a couple of weeks.

Too lazy to do the math myself - not too lazy to dig up a few sources for the amount of dough LFL raked in so far:

I know that the BD sets sold very well the first week, I'm just wondering if they're still selling well or if the sales have dropped off significantly. The sales could actually end up being disappointing if the fanboys all bought it the first week, but if the more casual fans heard the internet chatter and decided not to buy, when they normally would have bought it a few weeks or months after the release.

I was sort of hoping that, but I kind of doubt it given that it's still in Amazon's top 10.

Pretty much all reviews of the Blu-ray box I've read are stating that the original versions are not included, and that some of these more recent changes are indeed for the worse.

There may be TF.Net users that are in love with the "NOOOOO", but most professional reviewers seem to hate it. Despite high sales numbers, the bad press could be harmful in the long run. Especially when it comes to the 3D re-releases...

Again, that may be, but it's still a question of how things stand financially. Unless this outcry causes BIG ripples, which we can only hope for.
