That was the same lightsaber handle used in both films? I didn't know that.

I think skyjedi2005 was referring to the BMG/RCA releases from 1997 vs the Sony releases from 2004.

Exact replicas of the original LP sleeves......with music from 1997 (in the case of ROTJ)?

The Jabba concert suite may be missing, but the version that was done by the Utah Symphony Orchestra on the Star Wars Trilogy CD (Varese Sarabande label) is excellent.

I always thought it was odd that on the original Jedi LP, they used an alternate cue rather than the actual cue that was used in the film for "Rebel Briefing" (the scene where Leia tells Han about Luke, which dissolves into the funeral pyre scene). When I was a kid, I remember listening to that piece of music and thinking to myself "what part of the movie was THAT in?!" Fortunately, both versions have since been released on CD (plus 1 or 2 other alternate versions of that scene).

I understand why they put the more "commercial" sounding versions of Lapti Nek and the Ewok Celebration on the LP, though.

The RCA and sony are indistinguisable in listening terms but sonys claims to be further remastered in something called DSD or direct stream digital whatever that technobabble means i have no clue.

I also own the first RCA 2-CD releases, and I once asked if I should bother with the Sony re-releases. Someone here told me not to bother because they were sonically identical to the RCA versions.

I don't think DSD means much unless you're talking about SACD:

INFO ABOUT DSD LINK

Why these soundtracks haven't been released on SACD is beyond me. You'd think it would be a no-brainer considering how popular they are. Maybe the source material isn't good enough? Seems like a waste just to do yet another CD release.

Why not? I'm curious to know what's wrong with them. They sound quite good to me (especially the BMG/RCA 2-disc editions), but maybe that's because I grew up listening to the LPs on a plastic record player with plastic speakers.

I hear quite a bit of tape hiss on the CDs, but I think that's to be expected from recordings of their age.

What would be really nice is if the OT scores were released on SACD or DVD-Audio, but that's probably not going to happen.

If you own the Anthology boxed set from the early 1990s (which featured the last release of the original Jedi music), PLUS the 2-disc SE releases, I can't see any reason to buy this, unless it contains some of the "lost" music from Jedi (like the film-version of Lapti Nek and the Sail Barge intrumental music).

As far as the PT music goes, I care as much about that as I do about the movies (which is not very much).

Afterall, they did release a box set recently that had a cd with a song from the holiday special. If they're releasing music from THAT lol... they better be releasing music from the films lol

Are you talking about the "vault" book? That's coming out in October and it will feature Carrie Fisher's song from the Holiday Special.

EDIT: I just finished the survey, and I mentioned the OOT in 2 of the type-in sections, including the 'comment' section at the bottom, where I essentially told them I want the 77/80/83 versions of the OT remastered and released on hi-def video, and that as an older fan, I felt personally alienated by GL because of his not having done so already.

That ROTJ cover is great strangelove! That's probably my favorite shot in the whole movie- beautiful!
Great work on the others as well, and yours too Arnie.d! (I like yours with Luke in the flight suit best).

Regarding Criterion and the types of movies they typically release, it's true that they're associated with smaller, "artsy" films nowadays, but I think Criterion did a lot more mainstream-type movies back in their laserdisc days. I still have my criterion LD of Blade Runner (though not a blockbuster like SW was, it wasn't a "little" film either).

I have no connection whatsoever with the EditDroid team, so I know as much as you do. It seems like it's definitely a theatrical trailer. To me, it looks like a film projection being videotaped. The version on EditDroid Special Features is interlaced. I deinterlaced the version on Story of Empire so I could pillarbox and resize for anamorphic. My version is 16:9 pan & scan. That is, on 16:9 sets it's pillarboxed and on 4:3 sets it's fullscreen. The aspect ratio is correct on both kinds of sets.

Thanks for the info. I remember seeing a TV spot very similar to this trailer, but it's not included on any video collection I have (DC laserdiscs or the '04 Bonus disc) and I'd always wondered about it. I seem to remember that the version I saw on TV had some sort of voice-over (but most TV spots do, I guess) and the Star Wars music rather than stock music.

Help Wanted: Project To Collect All Star Wars Documentaries
Time
I didn't get a response in the 'general' forum so maybe you guys/gals in here will know-

I seem to remember a Star Wars-related documentary where the actor Grant Goodeve (who replaced Mark Hamill in 'eight is enough') jokingly thanked MH for his job on the show. I thought it was in the MH Biography special, but it wasn't, and now I simply cannot rembember where I saw it (or if I imagined it?) I scanned through some of the other A&E Biographies just to make sure (Lucas, Fisher, Ford), but it wasn't on those either.

Does anyone happen to know? Thanks in advance.

EDIT: I think the clip I'm thinking of may have been in an "Eight Is Enough" documentary, which explains why I couldn't find it in my SW documentary collection.

You guys got me thinking about it, and I watched it again last nite too! I hadn't seen it since I taped it when it first aired.

It was really good, except that I wish they'd had the time to explore some more of the TV work that MH did in the 70s, especially the TV-movies like "Eric" and "The City".

Hmm, if I were going to describe non-letterboxed, non-anamorphic images without loss, I'd simply call them full-screen+original-aspect-ratio since the term anamorphic has a very precise physical meaning and should only be applied to an image that is stretched at some point along the line.
Yeah, I'd call that '4:3' .

The term "anamorphic" IS confusing to many people, and the term will probably become antiquated when all TVs are 16:9 and all video sources are 16:9 (or close to it). I guess you could consider any video that is 4:3, like The Wizard of Oz, 'anamorphic' if viewed on a 4:3 screen!

Regarding the previous post I made about the poor resolution of HD and the prequels--it should be noted that the prequel films arent actually HD res. They are in fact, less than HD resolution--because HD resolution is in a 1.78 native ratio. The 2:35 aspect ratio is achieved by cropping. So, in fact, its a blow-up of a smaller portion of the image.
TPM was the only one of the prequels shot on 35mm, wasn't it?

Right now I am working on a film that is using the same cameras and lenses that were used in AOTC and the HD tech we have has done nothing but complain about how crappy they look--in our case, we are just doing a TV movie so it is acceptable, but its really sad that the prequels were made with these things.

If you haven't seen it already, this is a really great documentary about film preservation. It deals with the issue of digital as an "archival" medium a bit:

I think it's actually higher than that since hi-def video is only supposed to have about 1/4 the resolution of 35mm film. (still a lot better than standard DVD, though).

Was the actual o-neg scanned for Lowry? I thought they just had prints scanned in. The SE o-neg would be different, anyhow, since none of the digital changes for the SE would exist on the 1970's negatives.

Well, because it looks like crap. I tried initially to use it, cleaning it up, etc. But, like a lot of the GOUT footage, it is so bad I didn't want to open my edit with it.
Ah- I see. Thanks!

MoveAlong, do you happen to have any info on the '1980 Trailer 1'? It looks like a TV spot that I saw around the time the film came out, and I haven't seen it since.

I know this came from Editdroid, but I was just wondering if you knew if this trailer is a TV spot or a theatrical trailer. I'm also curious about the source- it looks like it was shot with 8mm film off a TV or movie screen.

I agree 100% with you there. If I were to do my own edit combining the '04 SE DVD and GOUT DVD, I'd leave that scene in.

The 'gauntlet' scene. Glad you like it too. ;-) I really miss that scene now when I see the '78 version of the film - the edit feels abrupt.

The colors and brightness are always different, and surprisingly a lot of Fox movies from the mid to late 70's don't even have opening fanfare. I do still have the Omen Fox logo VOB if anyone wants it for their own edits.
