Here’s a pretty good article about the film: https://www.avclub.com/part-kurosawa-part-wile-e-coyote-the-last-jedi-boldl-1821291545

RE: Ackbar vs. Holdo, the author of this piece has a good point in a response to a comment:

Lotta folks seem to think that her role should have gone to good ol’ Admiral Ackbar, but I get Johnson’s intention: Everybody likes Ackbar, and the audience needs to be fooled into Poe’s point-of-view.

Pretty sure the Ackbar idea originated here:

The prequels are terrible movies. And I even knew that back at the time even though most people seemed to love them at the time. But the terrible prequels never RUINED the Original Trilogy for me.

Funny enough though, the mantra for many fans has been that Lucas ruined their childhood because of the prequels.

That was because of the '97 Special Editions, not the prequels. You can ignore the prequels if you want, but you can’t ignore all the added CGI crap in the OT that you grew up watching when those are the only versions available.

Hence, this site.

it seems RJ forgot his movie is supposed to be part of a trilogy and saga. You don’t create a trilogy and saga by cutting all ties with the past, and having no open story threads for the future. There’s literally nothing to look forward to

My wife says that’s one thing she liked about this film, as a middle film, as opposed to ESB. In ESB the movie just kind of ended, with a very deliberate (and bothersome) cliffhanger.

By “bothersome” you mean “one of the greatest endings in movie history”, right? 😉

Did someone actually say ‘Godspeed’ in a SW film?

Ha ha. Stuck out like a sore thumb. “May The Force Be With You” is what it’s supposed to be, isn’t it? 😉

I don’t remember that but they also they said “cops” which took me out of the movie, too. Well, the whole casino scene did with all the slot machines, champagne etc.

Yeah, it was Laura Dern’s character that said “Godspeed”. I didn’t notice anybody saying “cops”, but I kept expecting Daniel Craig to show up during the casino scene.

So true! But that happens a lot on here. Lots of people have been banned doing what Dom is doing! But only if they don’t like the same movies as the mods!

Well, I’ve been here since 2006 and if hating the Special Editions and the Prequels wasn’t enough to get me banned, then probably nothing will! 😃

I don’t think I posted anything about my feelings for TFA, I guess my expectations were lower, and maybe it was even a better film than TLJ. I’m just really, really disappointed at the way TLJ turned out. So many wasted opportunities.

And sure, there’s nothing wrong with that, but what you’re doing is asking for people to cease intelligent film criticism and discussion and just end it with a base level impression.

Nope. Not asking for any of that.

But you did say that people who like the film should stop trying to analyze it to explain why they do, didn’t you?

No I didn’t say that at all. I said that “I” didn’t need to analyze a film to know whether or not I like it.

I just think it’s ridiculous to dismiss everyone who has legitimate criticisms of the film and try to explain to them why they should like it. Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones, etc. Flashback city.

Well okay but if the legitimate criticisms are countered with legitimate points, what’s the issue? There’s a distinction there.

You essentially have the same attitude, but from the other side…
I just think it’s ridiculous to dismiss everyone who has legitimate things they appreciate about the film and try to explain to them why they shouldn’t like it.

I don’t think there is such a thing as “legitimate” or “illegitimate” points when it comes to subjective tastes. This isn’t science—it’s art.

That was your word, though, you said “legitimate criticisms.”

Listen, I don’t care if you just like what you like and don’t like what you don’t. But intelligent film criticism is about exploring why you have those reactions, and I don’t see why there’s anything wrong with that. This doesn’t even have to do with my thoughts on the film itself. It’s just a weird thing for someone to say.

I used the term “legitimate” as in “not-nit picking-for-the sake-of nit picking”, not in the sense that you can tell someone they’re “wrong” about how they feel about something. Maybe I should have said “substantial” instead, to make my point clearer.

I have no problem with exploring “why” you have a reaction (either positive or negative) about something.

I don’t think I’ve said anything “weird”, but I know that plenty of weird things are said on this site for you to find.

Everyone has their own tastes, of course, but trying to explain to someone why they should like this film is too reminiscent of what went on during the Prequel era.

I either like a movie or I don’t. I don’t have to analyze it to figure out “oh yeah, you’re right! This WAS a good movie!”

I like the original-original trilogy. That’s it. I’m done with anything else star wars. They’ve finally lost me. I never thought I’d say that about a star wars movie with Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher, but…there you go. Even they couldn’t save it this time.

Hopefully the fox/disney merger will speed along an OOT blu-ray release, but other than that you can keep IX because I’m not interested anymore. 😕

I agree with pretty much everything you said. That Leia scene immediately reminded me of “Superman Returns” and it was pretty cringeworthy. I tried to justify it by thinking maybe she was having an OBE and she wasn’t really floating in space? 😛

Also–I was thinking maybe Luke was Rey’s father. Nope. Rey’s parents were apparently a couple of drunks in a bar.
Oh great. Thanks for that. I can tell you spent some long nights coming up with that one. 🙄

The Last Jedi: Official Review and Opinions Thread ** SPOILERS **
Time

I just got back from the 6pm show, and there was a special “opening night” featurette hosted by the director that focused on John Williams. The featurette had some nice behind-the-scenes archival clips and a couple of clips from ESB and ROTJ. We got a pack of oversized Topps trading cards as we entered the theater. We were given questionnaires to fill out and hand back when the film was over. The film was in 3D but I don’t really think the film made much use of the 3D presentation and frankly, I would have just as soon seen it in 2D.

Some good moments in the film, but not enough to make a great movie, unfortunately. Both my nephew and I were somewhat disappointed.

Glad I went as I got to spend some time with my nephew, but this will probably be the last Star Wars film I see theatrically.

The new films have been bittersweet for me anyway because my Mom isn’t here to see them with me. We were all high fives when we saw Episode III opening day, as that was supposed to be the last film, (hah!) and miraculously we’d seen them all together. That’s quite a run when I think about it.

I feel the same way. My mom passed away last year. This will be the first SW movie she won’t see. She was too ill last year to see TFA, but I got the blu-ray and we watched it at home. Prior to that, we’d seen every SW movie together in the theater.

Since we’re on the subject anyway…
What’s shocking to me is Carrie’s appearance in TLJ trailers—she looks markedly different from TFA, most notably her
nose, which is has a very wide/swollen appearance. Facial swelling can be an indicator of heart failure, so her appearance may
have been a harbinger of her illness. 😦

I wish they’d done that for their blu-ray release of “Teen Wolf” 😕

Shout/Scream Factory is usually pretty good though—they did a GREAT job with their “Phantom of the Paradise” blu-ray (with a LOT of help from the guy who’d collected all of the deleted shots, of course).

I remember seeing TISW so many times on TV when I was a kid—so many of these films just aren’t shown on TV anymore. I still remember the “Galaxy Glue” jingle, lol.

Back to the Future "Johnny B. Goode" video w/deleted scenes (Released)

In the movie commentary, I think it was Bob Gale who seemed really proud that they found such a great vocal “match” for MJF. But to me, the vocal always stuck out like a sore thumb and the scene would have felt much more authentic if he’d done his own vocals.

Aside from the “lost” footage, someone could drop in shots from the full frame DVD and restore a good chunk of it.

I hope somebody does that.

Anyone else totally disregard Leia being Luke's sister?
Time

I read “Splinter” after seeing ROTJ so I just chalked it up to the writer not knowing what was to come (the way Luke & Leia didn’t know they were siblings).

I saw ROTJ on May 25th, 1983. Loved it then, love it now. I never had a problem with Luke & Leia being siblings.

EDIT: I just noticed this thread is from 2007. lol.
