Yes, I'm planning on buying a new computer soon- as soon as I can get to the Apple store. It's a testament to the quality of Apple computers that my iMac has lasted this long.

Yup, they're from the Definitive Collection & Faces THX LD masters.

I'm afraid you really will have to wade through all 89 pages for the answer to this one. Or you could head over to the X0 website and read their GOUT article.

The short answer is that the GOUT is an inferior source because it's been compressed for DVD.

"The Verdict Is In" article? That's the only one I see on the X0 site regarding the GOUT DVDs, and it really doesn't go into why the LDs are better than the DVDs, or compression issues with the GOUT DVDs.

I thought I remembered Zion saying something once in this thread (around the time the GOUT DVDs came out) about the resolution of the DVDs and the X0 captures being about equal (?)

Oh and.....

I expect it will be a long time before we see the OOT in HD, if indeed ever (the closest we'll get will be a fan recreation such as PaulisDead2221's Vintage Edit). And anyone who's examined the GOUT in detail, or tried to improve it, will know that some of the flaws of that DVD are irrepairable.

That is why we need a preservation that combines the best available laserdisc sources. Maybe I'll start Moth3r V2.0 this year.
How is it that the GOUT is a worse source than the LDs? Isn't the GOUT a better representation of the masters?

Sorry if this has already been explained in-depth (as I'm sure it has been- ad nauseum). I have a 9-year old computer with a dial-up connection, so the X0 project will be finished before I can wade through all 89 pages of this thread.

That sounds funny as hell. I'd love to see that.

Is this it? **CLICK** (sounds like kazoo music, though)

Recognize the credits at the very beginning?

I'll look through my tapes too. Every time I saw or heard that theme I would run to the tv and pray that they were playing Star Wars again.

I can't believe the stuff on YouTube. Truly amazing.

That sums it up perfectly.

And for the record, I have nothing against the Clone Wars. Am I pissed that the original films they stem from haven't been restored and released properly? Hell yes. Would I be more interested in seeing a Clone Wars movie if I wasn't so bitter over the treatment of the OOT? Perhaps, but probably not.

It's the OOT that I've always cared for most- even before the whole OOT vs SE disaster. I really never got into the EU, I've only read a couple of EU books, so the ancillary stuff has never really been of much interest to me.

What's "ST"?

I'm sure the details (if any) of eps. 7, 8 & 9 were fuzzy back then - especially knowing now that Lucas was pretty much making it all up as he went along.... But I guess Mark Hamill envisioned playing an older Luke, who perhaps dies and then reappears as the "ghost of" (Obi-Wan-style).

I had the interview on audiotape for many years (taped from a TV show, which is what I used to do before I got a VCR). I don't know if I still have it, though. If I can find it, I'll post the exact quote.

I wonder if anyone has the knowhow to recreate that HBO bumper in 480p...

Speaking of 480p- will this Emmet Otter DVD be progressive when finished, or can't you do that because it was originally shot on videotape? (or at least it looks that way to me).

Excuse my ignorance- I'm just learning about this stuff.

On the other hand, 3 movies set after the events of "Return of the Jedi" in a 100%CGI format to complete the original plan of 9 episodes {With the voices of the surviving original stars from Episodes IV - VI } would be total kick ass! That I would pay for.

Yes, I'd like that too. I still remember an interview that Mark Hamill gave when ROTJ was released, that he'd signed on to do episodes 7, 8 & 9 with Luke perhaps being on "another plane of existance". I still like the idea of that, preferably live-action, but CGI would be OK too, if he voiced the character.

Yeah, I associate that HBO intro and it's accompanying music with the HBO airings of Star Wars that I watched so many times in the early '80s (sort of like we so closely associate the extended 20th Century Fox theme with the film).

Do you also remember the extended version of that intro with the miniature town? (I think they saved it mostly for the feature presentations at night). I wish I had a recording of that, but I don't think I do. HBO used to run a featurette all the time about the creation of the miniature set for that intro.

Too bad HBO doesn't use it anymore.

Don't you just LOVE the HBO in space! LOL!

The transition is after the scene when the Riverbottom boys go past the treehouse on their snowmobiles and just after Emmet and Wendall stick their heads out of the window and Wendall says "what was that all about?"

I hope the materials I sent you are OK. I noticed as I was making the DVD-R dubs that the older (HBO) tape has some "wavyness" at the top of the screen in most shots. Since you need only a second or two of footage from that version, though, it should be alright. Good luck!

Misheard line in ESB

After reading through the thread about the "uncut" Empire 70mm I thought of an instance where I remember something from the theatrical run yet have never seen it in any other version. Mind you I was pretty young at the time but I'm pretty sure it was there.

When Luke is upside down in the Wampa cave, and fails to reach for the lightsaber, I remember then hearing Obi Wan's voice instructing Luke to "use the Force". After hearing this, Luke then reaches out and tries to grab the saber using the force.

Anyone else hear of this bit of dialog in any of the released versions?

I also saw the ESB re-release in 1982 (which was the only time I saw it theatrically aside from the SE) and I don't remember that line being in there, FWIW.

The Muppet Movie Extended Edition (Released)
Time
I just finished tranferring my old Magnetic Home Video VHS tape of The Muppet Movie onto a DVD-R. It runs one hour, 34 minutes. I know that the video versions were supposedly cut down a bit from the theatrical versions (or the British theatrical version, anyhow) but does the DVD have any additional cuts?

I hadn't watched the tape in a long time, but I noticed that the film doesn't seem to suffer too badly from being full-screen. I'm wondering if it was shot in Super35? I haven't seen the widescreen DVD, so I don't have anything to compare it to (although I did see it theatrically in 1979).

I also noticed that when I popped the DVD-R into my computer to have a look at it, I noticed that at the very top of the screen on the left, there's some sort of lettering (from a control screen, I assume) that was cut off by TV overscan. You can just see the very bottom portion of the letters, they're static and they're there throughout the entire film. I thought it was odd, as I've transferred a bunch of VHS tapes onto DVD, and this is the first time I've noticed anything like that.

Why do you say so? Is it only because Ward is now leaving? Close Encounters and Blade Runner got their OV's released on bd. I would hope that forces Lucas to step up to the plate.

I would hope so too, except that with Lucas you just never know. He's one of the few directors/producers who doesn't seem to mind saying "eff you" to his films' most loyal fans, (which would seem counterproductive to most reasonable people) so who knows what the hell motivates him and how his mind works.

I'm going to do the same thing, but like you, I need to get my thoughts organized.

There was a time when it was all on on the surface and would have just come spilling out of me, but I feel a bit burned out about the whole thing now and I've lost focus. Maybe I should read some of my old posts.

Info Wanted: Question about 1980 uncut Empire

However, I am unable to confirm as to whether any preview audiences saw the film before these changes were made. Harrison Ford remembers sitting in one preview screening to judge the impact of the 'I know' line, so I guess it's possible. Though this version would undoubtedly only be seen by preview audiences and not the general public.

On the Definitive Collection commentary, Ken Ralston (I think it is) says that there was a finished print shown at the ESB wrap party. He went on vacation, thinking that his work was done, and got a phone call telling him that George wanted to add some FX shots to the finale. Ralston thought it was a joke, as the film was to be released in 3 weeks and they had already viewed a finished print of the film. But, he did have to go back and create some additional shots to extend the ending.

So, it seems impossible that anyone outside those directly involved with the film would have seen the first edit of the finale.
