I've always thought that the Rancor scene was wonderfully executed, except for the matte lines, which still weren't fixed in the SE.

but does that really ADD anything to the movie? If anything i think it would detract from the mood and the darkness of the movie, apart from touching up of lightsabers blades the Luke vs Vader duel is as close to perfection as the saga gets.
I totally agree.

This thread is starting to embarass me.

OK, rant over.

That one really cracked me up! One of the best posts ever, Sluggo.

I remember having C-3PO's back in the day, but does anyone remember what they tasted like?

They were, to be quite honest, the tastiest cereal I think I've ever had in my life. Kind of a vanilla-y, sweet flavour to it... very hard to explain.

Not only was the cereal good, but I used to love the cardboard cut-out masks they'd print on the back of the box (my personal favourite being the stormtrooper mask).

I'd go bananas if the put 3PO's back on the market.

I also have a set of 3PO's cereal boxes with the masks on the back. I especially liked the Luke mask.

I didn't care for the taste of the cereal- and I'll eat any kind of cereal, so that tells you something. After eating it once or twice, I actually took all of the cereal out of the remaining boxes, put it in a plastic bag and gave it to my nephews.

The flavor is hard to explain, I don't recall it tasting like vanilla. Maybe it was more of a honey & corn kind of flavor? (but not like Corn Pops) In any case, I didn't like it.

Are you sure it is really illegal? I thought the guy was making a joke. If that was true, what would be the reason for it?
Maybe it was a joke- if it was, I didn't get it (that happens a lot).

Or, it might have something to do with kiddie porn, or the dangers of used underwear?

I remember first hearing about that card many years ago. Around the time Jedi came out, there was a sci-fi store in CT that I used to order SW items from, and they had some of those "x-rated" cards for sale.

What do you think? What the hell was Leia doing at Tatooine at the start of ANH?!

She was going to Tatooine to pick up Ben and bring him to Alderaan. When she realized she wasn't going to make it to Tatooine, she sent Artoo down with the plans to give to Ben, so that Ben could bring the plans to Alderaan himself (?)

TVs use to look a lot cooler too. I loved those big ones with the real wood casings.

My parents had one of those in the mid-1970s. It was a Zenith and I think it was 25". That was a fairly large TV in those days. It had the brass drawer-pulls on the front (the drawers were fake, of course- just facades). I think that was our 1st color TV. My Mom hated it and left it there when we moved.

This is where (and I'm sorry to bring it up for the ninth, no, tenth time) LFL completely missed the point of why we want the originals in good quality.
I saw SW and ESB in 1982 and ROTJ on opening day in '83. I do feel a certain amount of nostalgia for the first time I saw the films, and also the first TV airing of SW in '83 (on HBO). However, there's a lot more to it than just nostalgia.

I was pretty much disappointed by every second of it. The only thing I really enjoyed about it was Liam Neeson- who's talents were kind of wasted in it. I wasn't particularly impressed by the soundtrack, as I feel it didn't hold a candle to the themes John Williams wrote for the OOT.

I saw it twice theatrically, once on the opening day and once for my Nephew's birthday celebration. I was 28 when it was released, so maybe if I had been a child I would have more nostalgic feelings about the time period in which it was released, but I don't think I would have enjoyed the film any more.

And to think I almost didn't include that in the rip! For some reason, I decided to leave it on there.

Is George Lucas a fan of Star Wars?
Time
Oh, I definitely agree that he's been corrupted, and all artists do seem to have a creative peak, but I believe that true talent endures and it's hard to imagine that the man who directed the prequels is the same person who directed SW and Graffitti - it's like he's been replaced by a pod person.

But, even when George was still considered to be a good director, he was never considered to be a good actors' director (we've all heard the "faster, more intense" line). So things like that make me think that maybe all his youthful hunger and creativity back then were enough to get him through those films without revealing his weaknesses as a director. Now that the youth and hunger is gone (replaced by "yes" men), this is what we're left with.

And yes, his directing a couple of box-office bombs would have been a healthy, humbling experience (and something that still hasn't happened yet).

Well as shocking as it seems, the first movie George directed since Star Wars in 1977 was a film that came out in 1999 called The Phantom Menace. So, you're saying that he was out of practice, and that's why he sucks as a director now? It's a valid argument, but in my opinion it seems that his talent was more limited than he or any of us originally thought, and his revived desire to direct simply surpassed the limits of his directing ability.

Using Spielberg as an example- it's impossible to know what would happen if he stopped directing for 20 years and then decided to make another movie, but somehow I doubt whatever film he'd make would be his own 'Phantom Menace'. But, we'll never know that because at Spielberg's age, he can't really take a 20 year hiatus from directing.I don't think Grafitti and Star Wars were flukes. 20 years can have a big impact on somebody. My take is that he went from a young ambitious director who wasn't afraid to go against the grain a little and do things that people told him he couldn't do.

My take on it is the exact opposite- in the early days, he was a young, ambitious director who had less control over his films than he would have liked. As a result, the influences of others were allowed to come into play. Today, he has TOTAL control of his films, and we can see the results of that.

Imagine if Spielberg had made E.T. and then a sequel to E.T., then another sequel, then a trilogy of E.T. prequels that deal with E.T.'s dad and the birth of E.T. and how E.T. ended up coimg to visit earth and so on, then imagine Spielberg complaining about all these other movies he had wanted to make, yet was forced to do nothing but E.T. all his life. Nope, I can't imagine it either.

LOL, exactly. I think Lucas' "career" is one of the biggest shame's in recent history, simply because it could have been really great.
Maybe. There was a time when I thought that GL was incredibly talented, and it bothered me that he didn't direct more. Now, I seriously doubt his talent as a director. Sure, Spielberg has had some klunkers, but the majority of the films he's directed have been fantastic. I can no longer say the same for GL.

Where I used to think that George was a great director who just didn't like directing very much, now I think that American Graffitti and Star Wars were flukes-- happy accidents that came out great due in large part to all of the other talented people involved with them.

It sounds like you just didn't set your software up right.

I doubt I can find any software updates for OS 8.6

My point is that the flaws I see on the GOUT are the same flaws I see on the LD-dubs. I only mentioned the motion artifacts because they hid problems that were revealed once I saw the GOUT (unhampered by the motion artifacts).

After living with the GOUT DVDs for over a year and the Faces and DC Laserdiscs for about 4 years now, here's my experience with both:

I made my own DVD-R copies of my Faces LDs 4 years ago, in fact, I purchased a LD player and a DVD recorder just for that purpose. The LD-copies looked good on my TV (which is interlaced), so I was horrified when I viewed them on my computer and saw the constant motion-artifacts (the ones that look like horizontal lines on anything that moves).

I was so distracted by that, that I didn't notice some of the other problems like the aliasing (the motion artifacts actually obscured most of the aliasing), so when I got the GOUT DVDs and watched them on my computer, the motion artifacts were very obviously gone, and the first thing that jumped out at me was the aliasing.

Now that I've watched the GOUT DVDs several times, I look back at my own LD-copies and can see past the motion artifacts and notice the problems on the GOUT DVDs are also present on my LD-copies.

So, needless to say, I'm very interested in seeing the finished X0 project, and the result of combining the best qualities of the DC and SC LDs.
