What exactly is different. I watched the clips and they looked very similar. At least the Indiana Jones movies made it onto anamorphic dvd without any serious alterations.
There are some stills posted here:

If I'm not mistaken, it was from the Radio Drama -- which means that it was indeed Mark Hamill. :-)

I guess that explains why it sounds so much like Mark Hamill after all. :)

Thanks!
I thought I read somewhere that it was from the 35mm mono mix? Maybe I'm wrong.

Blank DVD's: + or - ?

I've had very bad luck with crap discs recently (all my burns have been jerky and with all sorts of artifacting that wasn't in the original file), so I ordered a 50-pack of Verbatim DVD-R's. It only cost $25, but I don't want 50 coasters sitting around my house. Was this a good purchase?
FYI, this week Best Buy has a 100-pack of Verbatim DVD-Rs on sale for $22.99

Sony discs are also good, and I've had good luck with TDK as well.

... P&S, bad quality DVD-what can you do...

Never heard of this film before, so I did a bit of digging. Although the DVD is P&S, apparently there was a Japanese laserdisc that was widescreen (AR letterboxed 1.75:1). Unfortunately it contains subtitles in the picture.

However, next Tuesday 27th May at 2:35am, it will be shown on Sky Movies Sci-fi/Horror. Maybe someone who subscribes to Sky Movies (I don't) will be able to capture a nice anamorphic version for you (admittedly with PAL speedup, but that's easily dealt with...)

Thank you Moth3r & SilverWook! :-)

I didn't know that the Japan LD was WS. I did some looking on ebay the other day to see if the US LD was WS, but unfortunately it's also P&S.

With the Sky movies scifi airing- this seems like a good opportunity for someone to do a preservation, since the WS movie isn't commercially available on DVD.

Why is the GOUT not anamorphic?

Fang Zei said:

OK, maybe there's an obvious answer to this question that I'm just not seeing, but here goes:

Since George obviously didn't intend the GOUT to be watched on widescreen displays (what with the subtitles getting cut off and all), why did he bother progressively encoding the video? I thought only widescreen sets were capable of displaying progressive material.
Yeah, but most movie DVDs are flagged progressive (or should be). While they're obviously not formatted for 16:9 TVs, I guess they figured they're going to be watched on a lot of widescreen TVs and computer monitors. Frankly, I'm glad they at least did that much. :-/

I got just the DVD of Slipstream (P&S, bad quality DVD-what can you do) and the cover image is HORRIBLE:

I’m wondering if anybody has a higher rez version of this illustration that I can print out and slip into the front of the DVD case?

I’ve done some searching on the net but so far I haven’t found anything.

Thanks! 😃

Difference in quality of laserdisc players

The only LD player I've ever owned is the one I still have, Pioneer CLD-3070.

Is there a site or page somewhere that compares the players?

This site has a lot of good info about Lds and Ld players - scroll about halfway down on this page: http://www.mindspring.com/~laserguru/askjosh.htm#hardware
and Josh gives a rundown on what are generally considered to be the best players. Elsewhere on the same page, he mentions some of the players to avoid.

I based the purchase of my cld-d703 based on his recommentation, and I'm very happy with it. I don't think you can go wrong with any of the players on that list.

The rest of the site is informative, as well. Use the "chapter listing" at the bottom of the page to navigate the site.

This site is also useful for in-depth tech specs and photos of all known Ld models:
http://www.laserdiscarchive.co.uk/laserdisc_archive/laserdisc_archive_page.htm Just click on the desired brand-name on the right column.

18% of LD owners cite Star Wars as a main reason for keeping obsolete format
Time
Well, I feel like a broken record again...;-)...the reason I bought my Ld player about 5 or so years ago was to transfer my Faces Lds to DVD. However, since the Gout DVDs were released, those are my discs of choice to watch. My Pioneer cld-d703 was one of the better players, (no match for the Pioneer X0 or X9) but the Lds look fuzzy compared to the Gout DVDs.

So, the reason I've decided to keep my Ld player isn't because of the SW Lds, but because of all of the other Ld content out there that is not available on DVD, and may never be. I have the 1984 Moroder version of Metropolis on Ld- which is still my favorite version of the film, and I doubt if that will ever make it to DVD. I'm sure that I will discover other Lds in the future that contain films and bonus material, commentaries, etc., that will never be released on DVD.

Has this already been posted? I think its very appropriate to this topic. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CPzDjaA03ts

That's pretty funny- I especially like the part at the end. ;-)

Well, I hope Indy IV is a good film. We'll just have to wait and see for ourselves. I'm very glad that Karen Allen is in it. I really liked her in the first movie (much better than Kate Capshaw's whiney character) and it's too often that we see over-50 actresses go into retirement (forced or otherwise).

Is everybody pretty much planning to go see this on opening day?

Feck, that's a good site! Can't think how I missed that one. Thanks for that URL Moth3r.

FYI, I also found this atricle from Bob Nillan on the subject of curing LD warpage from around 1992ish:
http://www.access-one.com/rjn/laser/legacy/ld13.txt

This all seems pretty good advice, and it all seems to boil down to: heat the discs a bit and press the buggers flat again by sandwhiching them between a couple of sheets of glass and stack something heavy on top.
Thanks for that- I haven't been able to find that site since they changed servers a while back.

I was going to suggest the 'heat' solution. Let us know how it works!

Thanks for the suggestions, but I'm never buying Epson again. I had an Epson a couple years ago and it was bar none the worst printer I have ever owned!

Sorry to hear about your problems with Epson. I've had an R200 for a few years now with no complaints, other than ink is insanely expensive (like any inkjet though).

I also have the Epson R200, and I like it very much (haven't tried the disc-printing function yet, though). I also owned the Epson 740i (which I ruined with generic ink) and I've also owned the Epson C82 which was a piece of crap. I guess it depends on the model. The 740i had the best photo-printing quality of the 3.

It is amazing that you can buy a new printer for less than a new supply of ink! :-/

I'm thinking about buying an Epson scanner (the old UMax is showing its age and I have $90 in Epson credit from that ink-related class action suit). I'd like to get one that scans negatives, too. Any recommendations?

Digital technology hadn't yet advanced far enough, the 1997 SE was mostly an old-fashioned photo-chemical restoration. The entire film wasn't digitized because there was no such thing as DI's back then, they just recomposited whatever shots they need, printed them back onto film and then spliced them into the neg so that it could be completed photochemically.

As for EOD, most of thats just laserdisk footage anamorphically enhanced. It was done out of house by some company, and the entire feature is anamorphic so that means they were forced to re-render the letterbox footage as anamorphic in order to include it in the feature, otherwise it would look ridiculous to have this tiny box in the center of the screen whenever they showed clips.

Zombie, how did you find all of this out? Do you know someone who worked on it?
