Siskel & Ebert 'Secret Of Star Wars' special from 1983....
Time

I found this on YouTube last night. I recorded this on audiotape when it aired in 1983, and listened to it over and over again! Just before Return Of The Jedi was released, Siskel and Ebert dedicated an entire show to the Star Wars Trilogy. It's an interesting analysis of why the original Star Wars films were so successful:

Part 1

Part 2

Part 3

.....and their promised ROTJ review which aired just a few days before it opened:

THE STAR WARS SAGA - 1080P AVCHD DVD-9 for PS3 & Blu-Ray players - Episodes 1, 4 & 5 available now
Time

The HD broadcasts are 16:9, right? I was watching ANH on Spike TV last night, (the standard def version) and it was shown at 16:9. I noticed that the 2nd-to-last shot had to be panned&scanned (Luke was almost totally cut off on the left until they panned over to him), but the very last shot they showed at 2.35:1 (?)

Look what I got for 25 cents! (a.k.a. Star Wars bargains)
Time

Yeah, there's a thrift store near me that I used to buy used records from (usually for 25 to 75 cents each), and then they started marking them at like $7 to $10 or more. They still had stacks and stacks of them last time I was there (no wonder), and I haven't been back since.

I did get a good deal many years ago at a flea market- a guy gave me a ROTJ Oral-B poster for free (it was actually a thin flat box that held the posters in the store, and one of the posters was pasted to the front). It was a poster I had never seen before, so I was thrilled. I love the artwork on it and it's still one of my favorite star wars promotional items.

Around the same time (mid-1980's) I found a Kenner Electronic Death Star/Laser Battle game in a bargain bin at Woolworths. The box was a bit beat up, but I think I paid $5 or $6 for it.

you were echoing dumb_kids request to adywan to have it removed, even if you didn't ask explicitly,

i was just wondering why people weren't more proactive in doing there own fixes...

or, are we not allowed to do that here?

Yes we are, just as we are allowed to speak freely. But this thread is about Ady's project, not about people doing their own fixes. I assume that if anyone decides to do more editing/tweaking, they'll start their own thread.

I don't think Ady takes offense to polite suggestions or discussion about his projects, which is all we were doing.

dumb_kid said: Now on topic... Ady I know you may be doing minor tweaks to the movies themselves (Han shoots first , etc) Any chance you can just yank out "Jedi Rocks"? I know you can't put in Lapti Nek with the orginal puppets, but the new song and dance number is awful. Hell I wouldn't mind an abrupt "cut to next scene" over having to being yanked out the movie completly with the horrible CG critters.

LOL! I share your sentiment.

My suggestion would be to put Lapti Nek in using the GOUT- of course there would be an obvious drop in quality, (except for some cutaway shots that he could still use from the HD source) but that would still be better than leaving in 'Jedi Rocks' or cutting the scene out altogether. IMHO, anyway. ;-)

how hard is it for you guys to fast forward past the parts you don't like? is it really that hard?

or what about taking the final version, and editting it yourself? if you want the scene removed,

just go into your favorite editor, and take it out?

i think the minor changes are fine, but what you're asking for is major surgery on the movie,

compared to touch-ups.... i mean adywan is free to do what he wants...

but how come no one else wants to try to do it by themselves, instead of constantly asking?

[and being disappointed when the change isn't made]...

Relax, negative1.

I wasn't asking Adywan to do anything. Adywan has already expressed his own dislike for 'Jedi Rocks' and I was just echoing dumb_kid's likewise statements.

Ady has already said that he's removing Hayden Christiansen from the finale, so I don't think there's anything wrong with discussing other undesirable scenes.

Or, are we not allowed to do that here?

Info Wanted: What are the original sources of the movies that we want DVD transfers from?
Time

It's interesting, I was watching one of the SE trailers last night, and I noticed that the explosion of the death star didn't have that ring around it......it makes me wonder about other unaltered shots and how many of them are really 'destroyed' or whatever LFL is claiming.

Puggo said: I'm curious... although a 70mm copy would be "lossy" compared with a 35mm original, I wonder if a telecine scan of a good enlarged 70mm copy might turn out better anyways.  The scanning process itself should be more effective when the source is physically larger.  Or am I missing something?

I would think that a 70mm copy would be better than a 35mm copy from the same source because the grain structure would be smaller, but probably a 35mm original would be preferable because there would be one less layer of grain from being duped. (?)

ChainsawAsh said: "Star Wars," however, was shot on 35mm entirely,

But the FX shots were done in VistaVision (35mm film running sideways to create a 70mm format). So technically, the FX shots are in 70mm.

Does any one have any help or suggestions? It will be very much appreciated by me.

I know there's extensive lists of the changes around the internet and dvdactive.com articles on the subject are quite good but I was actually hoping for the OS take on the matter.

Are these the ones you meant? There are a lot of comparison photos:

You really like to go out of your way to go against the grain don't you?

I suppose you also thought that awesome Blade Runner set was overkill to don't you?

Leia's fate after the first Star Wars...
Time

Then there's that cut scene from ESB where Luke and Leia are about to kiss, before 3P0 interrupts them (the whole scene is in the comic book adaptation, and partially in one of the trailers).

I don't see how that scene could have been scripted and filmed if Lucas had planned for them to be siblings. The scene where she kisses Luke later is different, because she does it specifically to piss off Han.
