STAR WARS DVDs, PLEASE HELP
Time

I agree with doublofive first buy the GOUT on dvd and then go and watch ADMs fan edits and ADYWANs edit of A New Hope. Heres a link to the fan edits at http://fanedit.org/all-star-wars-fanedits/

If BOBILLBAJO doesn't like the SEs, he's probably not going to be a fan of Adywan's edit of SW.t.

I'd stick with the GOUT, BOBILLBAJO.

Like doubleofive said, they're being released in a boxed set in November, and they may look acceptable to you, depending upon your TV.

I'm assuming they used it in the 83 one as a Teaser Poster so they didn't want to give away anything. Or they were just lazy.

Most likely it was because those were the only reference photos Drew Struzan had access to, or they were the ones he felt were the most aesthetically pleasing.

Actually, those were the movie posters for the 1997 re-release/Special Edition release, before they were the VHS covers. I suppose they were originally suppose to be lined up together in movies theaters, but every theater I saw them at only displayed one poster at a time, since they were released a month apart from one another.

Even though I wasn't happy about the changes for the SE, I did like the poster art for SW and I bought 2 versions of that poster- a one sided version that I now have framed, and a 2-sided version that was meant to be put in a movie theater's litebox and illuminated from behind.

For people confused as to why the ESB duel is used on the ROTJ cover it's because it's from a trilogy poster that lines up to make one big poster. You get stuff like the Emperor from ROTJ on ESB and Leia from ESB on ANH. It's from the Special Edition VHS releases.

An image from ESB was also used in the '83 poster, though:

Yes, the correct answer to the Darth Vader lightsaber ignition question was twice, and the one point from the above correct answer got jacked by the Jawa.  This game is a fleeting mistress :(.

Here, have two assist trophies, as long as you promise to use them before the next round :).

That's fine- I just wanted to know.

And I'm not crying, HotRod. Ha Ha! LOL.

Why was the '04 DVD set such a botched release?

ok guys, what does GOUT stand for?

"GOUT" is the term created for the DVDs that were released in Sept. '06 (which are the original theatrical versions in non-anamorphic form). They are also being re-released in a boxed set this November.

"OOT" (original-original-trilogy) and "OUT" (original-unaltered-trilogy) are more general terms that refer to the films as they existed prior to 1997.

Here's a handy guide that explains all the acronyms used on this site:

What really pisses me off is that Lucasfilm claim that they can't do a restoration of the theatrical version because the Oneg was cut up to make the special editions but then admit that they had to use some shots from a film print for the SE because the neg was too badly damaged. So why can't they just use a film print to restore the changed scenes? All we're being fed from them is total bullshit time and time again and when you get idiots saying that we should be happy with the horrific 2004 transfer of the SE then i just want to scream.

Exactly.

New DVD Covers for the 04 Set?

mugglejedi said:

hi, i didnt know if i should have posted this in the off topic thread or not but i was wondering if anyone knows of any altered versions of the 04 dvd covers.

i might be in the minority here (especially on originaltrilogy.com) but i like the photoshop jobs; my only beef is with having lando and fett on the ESB cover.

anyone know of anything?

I actually like the covers for the '06 releases. They were improvements over the '04 covers, IMO, in that they attempted to re-create the original poster art using photographs.

Star Wars on Blu-ray?

Thank you bkev and I do argee with you the theatrical re-releases are kindof pushing it like you said. Star Wars (A New Hope to saga fans.) was only re-released 3 times 1978, 1979, and 1981 before the SE in 1997  Empire was re-released only twice in 1981 and 1982 before the SE in 1997. And Jedi was re-release only once in 1985. I look it all up at IMDB. So maybe for the blu-ray releases the orginal trilogy the Orginal Theatrical Cuts from 1977, 1980, and 1983. Also the Special Editions from 1997 and 2004 and then the final editions of the flims for the blu-ray release.

Star Wars was also re-released in 1982 - that's when I saw it the first time. I also have the poster which mentions the "Revenge of the Jedi" teaser trailer that was shown with the film.

Did anyone buy the '04 DVDs without knowing how botched of a release it was or that it didn't include the theatrical versions? I participated in forums reading about the set before they came, so it was no surprise to me. but before that I just assumed Lucas would include the OOT with the special editions in the DVD set, and they would be treated with the best preservation efforts possible. It's just common sense.

When I bought them, I wasn't really posting on any SW-related messageboards yet, so I actually didn't know about the problems. I mean- I knew they were the Special Editions, so I bought them kind of joylessly, but I didn't know about the color or audio problems...or Hayden Christainsen.

However, the minute I popped in the SW disc, I immediately noticed the strange look of the Tantive corridors. When Princess Leia was captured by the Stormtroopers to meet with Vader, I knew there was something "off" about the coloring.

Just be happy about the dvds sets and look forward to the blu-ray releases when they eventually come out. That's all I'm saying.

The only trailer on the discs in shit quality is the one with the Vivaldi temp track music, which i actually already found better divx copies of on T'bones site and just assumed were done by the editdroid team.

I thought that was Holtz's "mars"? I read that somewhere, anyhow.

I found the discs impressive as well.

How many times do you watch Star Wars (OT,OOT, GOUT) - over a period of time?
Time
Janskeet said:

Couple of times per year, though I rarely watch them from star to finish anymore. Just parts

Same for me. The other night I wanted to watch the duel and finale from Jedi (the GOUT version, of course). I get the urge to watch certain scenes like I get the urge to listen to a favorite song.

The only time I really watch them from start to finish now is if I'm showing them to someone who hasn't seen them before. I love watching people's reactions. :-)

When and in what format was the first time you saw Star Wars?
Time

The first time I saw Star Wars was the theatrical re-re-release in 1982. I saw Empire that same year. I was 11.

I think my Mom didn't take me to see it in '77 because she had seen '2001' when it came out and hated it. She probably thought Star Wars was going to be similar.

I saw Jedi on May 25th 1983. Definitely my most memorable Star Wars experience. :-)
