Rock & Rule! I loved that movie. 😃

And I did buy that shirt! : )

Cool shirt–I bet most people won’t get the reference.

Did you see the Oscars? More Mark than I expected there to be. A highlight in an otherwise boring show.

I still have that envelope with the coupons, too. 😉 I found it in a drawer like 3 days ago. There was also a form to fill out to send away for a free vhs copy of ‘the making of star wars’ which I did. The cover was made to match the ‘faces’ covers and it had a new narration by Don LaFontaine, replacing William Conrad.

I thought the Making of Star Wars VHS was from Corn Pops cereal? I remember sending away for it. Fruit Loops got you Han as a Stormtrooper and Lays chips the Spirit of Obi-Wan.

You’re probably right. I sent away for all that stuff, too. The Han Stormtrooper, the Obi-Wan force ghost, etc. And then, Doritos had all those lenticular discs that I HAD to get every one of! (I never thought I could actually get sick of eating Doritos!)

It was Corn Pops

My dad liked them and so did I so it was pretty easy to get the two boxes to send away for it.

Anyone know why they changed the narrator?

Yeah Corn Pops are good, C-3P0s…not so much! I remember collecting the boxes that had the masks on the back and I ended up putting the cereal in a plastic bag for my nephews because I couldn’t eat it. 😛

The narration change was a rights issue, no doubt.

Original Star Wars vhs - which set is it?
Time

I have the original release of Star Wars on vhs. This is what the box looks like:
http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-jWw7eU7KrU8/TrdPIfyYb8I/AAAAAAAAAp0/afJqbpSUnww/s1600/Star+Wars+VHS+cover+1982.jpg

The box is wider than the tape itself, which was common in those days (my copy of The Muppet Movie is the same). Instead of sliding out the bottom, there was a “drawer” that you would pull out from the side that contained the tape so the box had to be a bit wider to accommodate the extra cardboard for the drawer (in the far right pic you can see the edge of the drawer poking out a bit).

Remind me of the 3PO moments?

Seems like one was about the time that he was saying mutiny was against his programming, but I don’t remember the line. They’re were a couple of others. One might have been when Finn and Poe and Rose were discussing their plan. They were not hilarious, but mildly amusing and not cringe worthy like most. The audience laughed out loud at them which I think made me enjoy them more than if I’d been by myself. Most of the other jokes landed with a thud with the audience when I saw it.

Funny how everyone who dislikes the movie seems to have gone to a showing where the jokes weren’t laughed at. All the jokes (even the dumb ones) were huge hits with the audience both times I saw it.

I didn’t like the movie, but the one and only time I saw it the jokes were laughed at. 😕

Just to note, Val, the actress is Vietnamese.

Ah k, my mistake. I was under the impression she was Chinese.

Say what you want about the character and the subplot but Kelly Marie Tran did a very good job in her portrayal of Rose

No argument there, I don’t think anyone has a problem with her acting abilities, but it’s too bad she wasn’t given more to work with.

Rose is a better character than Lando was. Barely. But still.

Seriously? Lando was a pretty pivotal character and really set all the events in motion for the 2nd half of the movie. He partnered with Vader to trap Luke and in the process got Han nearly killed and shipped off to Jabba (remember?)

No Lando: no cloud city, no luke/vader duel (no “I am your father”), no carbonite, no Jabba, no reason for rotj basically.

What exactly did Rose do that was so important (besides setting free horse-llama things and preventing Finn from committing an act of selflessness)?

They could have easily had all those events happen without Lando I am sure.

You can find a way to remove any character. But Lando added quite a lot and was integral in many ways. I don’t think it helpful to argue otherwise. I am curious how you view Rose.

I view Rose as an interesting character. She represents more of the working class of the resistance, if you will. I appreciated a character like that. I don’t think it helpful to argue that she served no purpose. That is why I compared her to Lando.

Lando was “working class” too. He went from being a gambler to administrator of a city. Luke and Han were also “working class.” Star Wars is full of working class heroes, but they also have reasons to be there. You can’t cut Han or Lando out of the movies and not have it affect the trajectory of the stories. Rose could be cut because she was mostly involved in side plots that didn’t amount to anything involving the main story. Which was about running out of fuel. I think.

Most of the movie doesn’t exist without Rose.

In that she occupies a lot of screen time, yes. But her presence in the film is inconsequential. She accomplishes nothing. Like I said in a previous post(s), you could cut her character totally out of the film and it would have no impact on the plot, such as it is. The whole casino/code cracker subplots could be eliminated entirely. It wouldn’t have made it a good movie, but it would have at least made it tighter.

I wish they’d filled some of that time with more training scenes with Luke and Rey. I would have loved to see Luke kick Rey’s ass in a lightsaber duel as part of her training. I would have loved to see him in a duel one last time. 😦

What do people not like about her?

The audience reviews on rotten tomatoes give lots of reasons, so do a lot of the review videos on youtube.

For me, I feel she could have been edited out of the film and it wouldn’t have mattered. Her character was underdeveloped and had poorly-written dialogue, like “we shouldn’t fight against what we hate, we should fight for what we love” (or something). To me, that’s right up there with “you’re breaking my heart!” and “sand is rough and your skin is smooth” (or something).

Yup. We’re just dumb. Glad you liked it, though. 😉

But, let me turn that around:

“Then yet some people can’t grasp the concept of storytelling, character evolution and originality - so they fault the critics, rather than their own willingness to accept whatever is given them.”*

*Not saying that’s how I feel about people who like this film (because that would be rude).

How to refer to Star Wars?

Star Wars’s is certainly the least offensive. But it’s still just a stack of disembodied heads. The original Star Wars artwork was gorgeous (both theatrical posters). The colors on the ROTJ SE poster are downright gross. The Emperor looks like shit on the TESB poster.

I have the SW one framed (I think the faces were very well done), though I agree that the composition wasn’t as interesting as some of his other posters. I don’t care for the other 2 as much, but I like how the three posters “connect” when they’re displayed in a row, and how the luke/vader portion of the rotj poster is kind of a nod to his original “red” rotj poster (which was a great poster).

The '78 “circus” poster is still my all-time favorite, though.

Yeah, that was part of a whole “Endor ghosts set” or something. I’ve got it in my parents’ basement somewhere. Think I also had a separate ghost Obi-Wan that came individually, but I can’t remember for sure.

I have the “force ghost obi-wan” figure that I got from sending in bar codes from frito-lay in '97(?). Kellogg’s also had a Han figure in Stormtrooper costume that I sent away for (during the “one last time” campaign around 1995).

When I talk to my 14yo nephew about the Star Wars movies, he’s not really that big a fan and has a hard time remembering which Episode number goes by which subtitle. At one point, he asked me why I don’t just call them by their episode numbers, and I said that it wasn’t until the prequels came out that their numbers even were on the box or that Star Wars was marketed as A New Hope.

Then I showed him images of OT posters and VHS boxes to prove my point.

God those were awful posters.

😕 I thought they were some of the nicest work Drew Struzan did for the OT. I think the SW poster was especially beautiful. The posters were the best thing about the SEs, IMO.

On topic: lately, I’ve been calling it “SW 77” to avoid confusion (referring to the 77 original, of course and not the 97 SE abomination). The SEs soured me on calling it ANH years ago.

That’s a giant porg. lol. Apparently, they were raffled off as a Target promotion.

Those braided things hanging off Boba Fett’s shoulder? They’re Wookiee scalps! I thought everybody knew that.

Yeah, I remember reading that someplace ages ago, but I didn’t notice them in the pic.

There was text pointing them out. 😛

I see that now—it’s very small and blurry on my screen.

In ROTJ, I liked the Ewoks. Even remember playing with that Ewok village toy. But after the prequels came out, I learned that there were a sizable group of OT fans who hated the Ewoks. i.e. just there to sell toys, or were too cuddly or something. I can understand people not liking the Ewoks. I do hate the CGI with blinking eyes in the Blu-Rays though. Also wish the Ewoks battle scenes didn’t have that green screen look to them.

But I was wondering. Are there any here who hated the Ewoks, but love the Porgs?

I thought most of those scenes were shot on location—I don’t recall a lot of green/blue-screen shots, but it’s been a while since I’ve seen it.

I loved ewoks and I liked the porgs. Ironically, the porgs were actually one of the few things I did like about TLJ, because when I saw photos of them, I thought I was going to hate them.

I call BS on most of the people who say they don’t like ewoks. I think they secretly love them. 😉 You can keep the blinking ones, though. I refuse to watch that crap. Ugh.

(All you young’uns know that Endor was originally supposed to be a Wookiee planet, and they just decided to cut the creatures down in size, right?)
