I still think it's the frame rate more than anything. There have been film systems with higher framerates- and although they were very sharp and clear, there were complaints that they looked too much like video.

I know a lot of videophiles don't like the 120Hz feature on newer TVs and complain when there's no option to defeat it.

I think you're going to be hard pressed convincing the casual viewers among us of the differences between video and film.  I know for myself, I don't have a clue what you're talking about and I don't see any difference.

I remember when I was a kid and first realized there was a difference between film and video- the cast of Growing Pains did a TV promo on film and they said something like "hey look! we're on film!" or whatever (the show itself was shot on videotape).

I understood then that that's why shows shot on tape like Three's Company had such a different look and feel than shows shot on film like Dynasty (aside from the sets and lighting, of course).

Random memories from 1977-83

I'm sure I've told this story before (lol) but my nephew was SO excited to get the new Luke figure in the black jedi outfit- I guess he was 5 (his birthday is May 25th 1978).

One of his little monster friends stole the figure - I think my niece said she saw it in his back pocket as he was walking out of the house (good plan). I got really mad and walked down the street with my nephew to the kid's house and asked for (and got) it back. :-)

Here is a great article that a portion of hightlights the problems on the 2 disc jedi set vs the anthology in terms of frequency response.

Wow- that's very interesting, thanks!

I just automatically assumed that the 2-disc sets had better sound than the '93 boxed set- guess I was wrong!

Really?  I could have sworn I heard otherwise.  ROTJ just seems so different from the other two.  Aside from promoting the special edition, the first two I have don't have anything special edition related, but the ROTJ has Jedi Rocks and the new ending song.  Then again, ROTJ is the only movie of the trilogy to actually have new pieces of music written for it.  The other two just used unused music cues for special edition-specific scenes, so maybe that's it.

I have all three of the 1997 RCA SE editions, and the ROTJ set has the exact same track list as the '04 Sony set you have with the photoshopped cover (including 'jedi rocks' and the new ewok/finale music).

My scanner is not compatible with my new computer- otherwise I'd be happy to scan the contents of the booklet for you. :-(  Looks like Sluggo is going to help you out, though.

It interesting to read the description of the music that was written for the scene where Luke builds his new lightsaber (the scene that supposedly was never filmed.....?)

That's not what I mean.  "Video" looks different than "film".  It's hard to put into words.

Look at a home family video.  Look at the dimensionality of it.  Look at the way things look.

Now look at a film.  It has a different feel to it.  It almost makes video look fake, as backwards as that sounds.

Film looks "real".  Video looks "live".

I think that's because of film's frame rate- 24 frames per second. It's like the difference between watching a TV drama and a sit-com. Sit-coms have traditionally been shot on videotape, dramas on film. Things shot on videotape always looked "flat" to me.

But I guess that's all changed now with digital cameras, HD cameras. If I'm not mistaken, HD movie cameras use a 24fps frame rate to simulate the look & feel of film.

Random memories from 1977-83

I most strongly remember the anticipation of Jedi coming out. I remember seeing the first 'revenge' trailer in the theater- it was so exciting. Then, there came the announcement of the name change. I remember seeing publicity photos before the film came out- Luke in his black Jedi outfit, which worried me because I thought that meant he was turning to the dark side. I remember seeing photos of the unfinished Death Star and thinking that it was the DS from SW- and this is what it looked like now after being blown up. :-P

I saw Jedi on opening day, and I don't remember a lot about the theater except that nearly every seat was filled. For most of the film, I was very worried that Luke was going to die at the end.

I just got my first HDTV and I'm so glad I did. It's only a 32" but I'm ASTONISHED at how fantastic my DVDs look on it (and my current DVD player doesn't even upscale, or have HDMI).

My next DVD player will be a blu-ray player. Why not? A blu-ray player can play and upscale all of my current DVDs, and I can find the occasional great deal on blu-ray discs- I recently got the first 6 James Bond blu-rays from Amazon for $6.60 each! (I always buy the media before I have anything to play it on :-P ). And I can rent the blu-rays that are too expensive to buy.

I was a bit underwhelmed by the way the picture looked on the HDTVs in the stores, too. But when I got mine up and running and made a few tweaks (ALWAYS turn that noise-reduction feature OFF!) I was really surprised at how fantastic everything looked. I only get about 6 channels in HD, but it's great to finally watch some of my favorite shows in hi-def.

DarkFather Begins - Where did your Star Wars story begin?

Fall of '77.  Saw Star Wars at the drive in when I was six.  Popcorn in the back of the station wagon.  I fell asleep right at the end.

My Sister wanted me go to see ESB at a drive-in in 1980 and I declined. I still regret it! :-P

I saw SW and ESB for the first time when they were released theatrically in 1982 and I saw Jedi on opening day (May 25th) in 1983 (I was 12).

Star Wars-esque music
Time

Some Debussy pieces remind me of Star Wars music- for example, "Clouds" (Nuages) reminds me of the music when 3p0 and R2 are walking thru the desert on Tatooine.

John Williams is often compared to Wagner - so maybe some of his pieces would work.

You might want to check out Holst's "The Planets" suite as well (the "mars" piece was used as part of SW's temp track).

The Prequels: I seriously cannot watch Star Wars anymore.
Time

I honestly don't have a problem putting the PT out of my mind when I watch the originals- but then I've only seen the PT films once (except for TPM which I got roped into seeing twice). I can't even remember much about AOTC except that I hated it - LOL!

I'm sure that has a lot to do with the fact that I was a SW fan for so many years before the prequels came out, but I think that the PT will eventually fade from your memory as long as you make an effort never to watch them again.
