A theory about the coloring on the 04 DVDs.
Time
Octorox said:

I have a theory that the reason for the extreme coloring on the 04 DVDs may have been to make the films look truer to Ralph McQuarrie's original art. Take a look at some McQuarrie art, all which has the blue cast which can be seen prominently on the 04 dvds. I'm not defending the coloring, just pointing out a probable cause.

It's an interesting theory (and sharp of you to notice that in the McQuarrie art), but I think you're giving Lucas too much credit. I think his days of doing anything for artistic reasons are long gone. :-P

I'm hearing Lowry has done a fantastic job on the new James Bond blu-rays - I wonder how they managed to do such a botched job on the '04 SW dvds (assuming it wasn't deliberate). I've heard various theories - I wonder if Lucas really requested that "look" for the dvds?

Poll: ROTJ Celebration Themes - 1983 or 1997?

 heres how it goes:

in the original version, Leia runs up and hugs Luke, then they look at each other. then it cuts to Leia handing Luke off to Han.

in the SE and Destroyed ending, Leia runs up and hugs luke, then it immediately cuts to lando re-enacting his escape to Chewbacca, and then back to Leia handing Luke off to Han.

Wow, thanks Blackjack!  :-)  So the SE totally cuts out the part where Luke and Leia look at each other?

Just out of morbid curiosity I'll have to watch the SE ending again.

I like both peices. However, the original theatrical ending has longer scenes with the main characters (Most noticably Luke's reunion with Han And Leia, the most heartwarming part of the ending), which is important because it's the last we'll ever see of them.

I never noticed that- I noticed that the '97 version has an extra shot of Luke hugging Wedge, and they edited Luke's "wink" to the force ghosts, but I didn't notice that they cut down other parts as well.

Not surprising, since I usually try to avoid watching the re-edited ending.

I can't imagine a more tired and inappropriate meme than "New Age music" when people complain about the 1997 music. I'm convinced that the vast majority who parrot that complaint have never listened to New Age music before.

Well, I can't speak for the 'vast majority' but in my case, you'd be wrong. I have some new age music and I actually like some of it very much.

2004 - Special Edition Return of the Jedi ending is a wtf moment
Time

We should take a poll or something. "Yub-Nub - yea or nay?" LOL.

The original ewok celebration music was fun- it reminded be a bit of the cantina music from SW. To me, the new music is nondescript, non-hummable. Plus, it was the capper to a trilogy full of disappointing & disturbing alterations. Some of the many reasons I hate it.

To each their own.

And Im sorry but SE hater or no the new music is soooo much better than that ridiculous yub-yub celebrate the whatever garbage, you know it and I know it. Come on. You know its better.

No frickin way! That new-age crap is awful! I don't understand how anybody likes that- it doesn't even sound like John Williams could have written it.

Yub-Nub! :-D

The sets in ROTJ

IIRC, didn't they cut a few scenes of the rebels fighting their way into the main part of the bunker? There's no real frame of reference as to how far in they were from the "back door" anyway.

Yeah, they cut that scene down quite a bit. There are some still photos floating around of some of the cut shots.

What was done for the 1995 THX mastering?
Time

The "Faces" LDs and VHS tapes from 1995 are from the same master as the Definitive Collection LD set from '93, and the same master (except for the original scroll on SW) was used for the '06 GOUT DVDs.

(The '93 VHS set in the Hologram box were sourced from a previous master - different soundtrack, too).

Aside from new telecine transfers, they used a 'dirt concealment' technique on the Faces/DC releases, which actually caused some unfortunate smearing and artifacts.

I can't find it on Youtube, but I did find what appears to be some fascinating behind the scenes footage from the shoot!

Interesting that bits of the Death Star docking bay control room set were still around when this was shot. (Circa 1979?)

Maybe I'm confusing it with one of the other PSAs.

That BTS footage in the DS docking bay is amazing!

So what exactly are you a fan of?
Time

I think how you view ROTJ has a lot to do with how old you are and when you saw the film for the first time.

I saw it on opening day in 1983, and back then, there were very few complaints about the film (at least among kids my age) and the reviews I saw were positive as well.

It seems like it took about 20 years for people to decide they didn't like ewoks (lol!) I'm sure there were some who didn't like them back in '83, but my point is that I think that the general consensus was that the film was a home-run, a feat made all the more impressive by the fact that there was SO much anticipation built up for the film.

Too bad you have to be a member.  I am never paying to use Lucas online ever again much less ever resubscribing.

Sky, I don't have a Hyperspace membership anymore- and I was able to take the survey (?)

It tells us to please login to take the survey. I guess you can get a free non-hyperspace account.

I was notified about the survey thru the Homing Beacon email newsletter (which is free). There was a direct link in the email to the survey, so I didn't even have to sign in.

Mielr what happened to being an unabashed Lucas Basher?

LOL! I did that mainly for negative1's benefit. He was always going on and on about "no Lucas bashing!" I figured since he was gone now...

I'll change it back if you think I should. ;-)

A New Hope 2004 DVD's picture quality too dark?
Time
R2-918 said:

Does anyone else agree that the 2004 DVD version of Ep.4 A New Hope seems too dark (Picture Quality) in certain scenes like the Cantina, inside the Sandcrawler and on the Death Star? The other day I watched the Original 1977 version of A New Hope from the 2006 DVD set and the picture appears to be brighter then the 2004 DVD version. I have read on other web sites is that the reason for this is that in the past when movies were released on VHS and even LD they were artificially brightened to make them look better, is this true?

The 2004 DVDs are very dark.

Have you seen this screenshot page?

http://www.aptirrelevance.com/otscreenshots/

Check out the comparisons of shot #34 in particular (Han in the cockpit). Look at the loss of detail in the background of the 2004 DVDs.
