Is George Lucas in the media much anymore?

Although Siskel was not around to say how awful the prequels Episode II and III were and give them thumbs down.

He wasn't around to see Episode I, either. He died in February of '99. Roger Ebert took Siskel's son to see it, as he promised he would.

I think Ebert's review of Ep. I was fairly positive- I somehow doubt that Siskel's would have been as kind.

Last Minute trip to london...advice?

The Hard Rock Cafe in London may have some SW mementos as the cast hung out there during filming (I stupidly walked past the place but forgot to go eat there when I was in London...DOH!)

Go to Abbey Road and get someone to take a picture of you crossing the street Beatles-style. :-P I managed to do that while I was there, but I missed the studio tour. :-( The London Symphony Orchestra recorded some of the the SW soundtracks there I think.

The place I stayed was a nice Bed & Breakfast but I can't recall the name. I'll post the name if I can find it.

Definitely let me know where you stayed.  I'm still looking for a place.

Which Star Wars cast hung out there?  Where did you get that story from?

Harrison, Mark and Carrie, of course. ;-) I always forget about that 'other' cast. LOL.

I stayed at the Jenkins Hotel, 45 Cartwright Gardens WC1. (tel? 0171-3872067, if still current).

There's a really nice fish & chips place nearby, too. My trip was 10 years ago, but I'd doubt if much has changed.

GOUT image stabilization - Released
Time
bkev said:

This has been detailed in the official screenshots thread.  It almost appears as though they blurred the GOUT some; note R2 in this shot.

[PIC]

PAL gout resized to NTSC.  Compare to...

[PIC]

Moth3r PAL, also resized.

While the GOUT IMO has a slight upper hand, the bottom left corner of R2 - what do we have here?  These odd notches seem to have been blurred together on the GOUT, whereas they are not on moth3r's transfer.

Maybe I missed something (not unusual for me, LOL) but why would you use the PAL Gout when the NTSC Gout is superior quality? (due to the fact that the PAL Gout wasn't sourced from a PAL master, and had to be converted from NTSC).

I spell colour like that too. I used to get bad marks in english class for spelling it that way, My teacher would go its COLOR NOT COLOUR. But I noticed that the english spell colour like that and seeing as americans use their language we should spell things correctly.

......and yet you fail to capitalize "Americans". Hmmmmm.......I think a few more bad marks are in order.

Original Intent

Would this change your opinion of anything?

No.

I don't care about his 'original intent'. The films were made the way they were made, and that's the way I and millions of others saw them from 1977-1997. Knowing what I know now about him, I think that we're fortunate that a lot of Lucas' original intentions didn't reach fruition.

The only thing that would lessen my ire over the SEs is if the OOT was given a proper release.

I think I might have a lead to the lost sand storm sequence footage

Er... what's "the lost sand storm sequence"?

Part 8 of "returning to jedi" has a reconstruction of the scene using all available material:

Here's the 'revenge' trailer that featured the footage:

How would you have done ROTJ?

Sorry for getting off topic.

I don't think what you've said is too off-topic, really.

I have to disagree with you about the Jabba part dragging, tho. You could question the logic of the whole Jabba strategy (like Gaffer did in another thread) but regardless of that I think the scenes are very suspenseful and well-paced. I love how R2 and 3PO show up first, and you wonder what the heck is going on, then Leia shows up, Han is defrosted and later Luke makes his dramatic entrance in his black cape. I know it's a surprise that's sort of over after you've seen the film once, but I love showing the trilogy to people who haven't seen it before and seeing their reactions. I mentioned before that I not long ago showed the OOT to a couple of kids, and the boy couldn't sit still thru the 1st 20 minutes of Star Wars, and even asked me "when does this movie start to get exciting?" So, you could make the argument that Star Wars "drags" in spots too.......well, you could make the argument, anyway. ;-)

I was glad for all of the quieter, slower parts in Jedi- knowing that it was the last SW film and I was never going to see these characters again, I didn't want things to move too quickly. I remember reading an interview with Carrie Fisher once, where she said that she wished here scene with Mark Hamill on the Ewok balcony could have been a bit longer, but everything in the Star Wars universe was so rush-rush to get to the next action scene. I have to agree with that, and that's why I'm happy that there are some reflective scenes in the film, and that it's not just 2+ hours of fighting and explosions.

As I said in another thread recently, I saw Temple Of Doom when I was about 13 and I loved it then- but now I see all of the flaws that others saw when it was released that I couldn't understand at the time. I can't say the same about ROTJ however- I saw it when I was 12 and I loved it and still do.

Oh, and I must have missed those 'good parts' in the PT (LOL). :-D

Info Wanted: GOUT with LD audio?
Time

The audio mixes on the GOUT DVDs are the same as what's on the '93DefCol/'95Faces LDs, except that the LD sound is superior because it's uncompressed PCM. The GOUT DVDs soundtracks are compressed Dolby Digital. The mix that is used was done especially for the DefCol release- it combined elements of a few previous theatrical soundtracks.

Is that what you meant?

I think there are some preservations in the works here using the GOUT video with the LD PCM audio.

Info: "making of star wars" film reel set - for sale on ebay
Time

Maybe it is your version I have, then, RowMan. I don't recall for sure if it has subtitles since it's been a while since I watched it. But, the LD rip I have of SPFX:TheESB has Japanese subtitles, I think.

adywan said: I didn't know there was a version of TMOSW that had a different narration to William Conrads though. That would be a great little bonus if someone could rip the audio of the alternate narration.

Adywan, I can try to help you with that if you like. PM me.

Info: "making of star wars" film reel set - for sale on ebay
Time

I bought it new at a video store - it's one of the first 3 videotapes I ever bought when I got my first VCR (the other 2 being SW and The Muppet Movie). I'll never forget- Star Wars was $80!!! Times have changed. That's back when you went into a video store, and the tapes were all in glass cases behind the counter. At those prices I understand why. ;-)

Was it Rowman who did the Japanese LD preservation?

I have the original VHS release (it was paired with SPFX:TheESB), as well as the cereal-promo re-release version. The original tape still plays great. The VHS tapes were very high-quality back then.

I also have the Japanese LD preservation - but I can't recall at the moment who did it.

Isn't that only 1-hour long? The ebay listing states that it's on two 1-hour reels- perhaps they're duplicate reels?

Info Wanted: When they restored Star Wars for the '04 DVDs...
Time
Janskeet said:

If they used the '97 restoration (or destruction, depending on your point of view), why did the colors get all fucked up in the DVDs? I don't recall the color being messed up in the '97 version, although it has been awhile since I've seen it.

As bad as the '04 version was, they were still good enough for Adywan to fix to what I think is good enough to please just about everyone.

The colors weren't messed up in '97 (theatrically or on the SE Laserdisc release). They saved that for the DVDs. ;-)

Why? Your guess is as good as anyones.

But, I'm one of the few around here that wasn't terribly bothered by the screwed-up colors (the sound problems and SE+ alterations bother me a lot more).

Raiders is bland. I find it boring,

I wonder if this is a generational thing.  In the past, movies had their ups and downs - it was called pacing.  Nowadays if something isn't exploding or someone screaming every 5 seconds, it's considered slow.

I was thinking the same thing.  I was 10 or 11 when Raiders came out, and I loved it. I was about 13 when Temple of Doom came out and I also loved it.

Well, it may be, but stop quoting me as it doesn't apply to me. I'm just saying that I don't like it very much or even that much that I would have bought them on DVD (not just because of Crusade), I have recorded them on VHS though. For me there's only one likeable character in Raiders and that's Indy, it just isn't enough for me. I don't care what happens to anyone else, there is no connection for me. Also the Ark is pretty lame, there's no info about what it really is and what it does and when you open it, it just kills people who have eyes opened. Yippee. People like different things.

Were you referring to me or Puggo? I wasn't responding to your comment, I was responding to Puggo (who quoted you). ;)

I still love Raiders, but when I watch Doom now, I see that it is a much weaker film- almost an embarrassment to the franchise (not as bad as KOTCS, but still...). Sure, Doom has a lot of action (and I guess that's why I liked it initially) but it just isn't the masterpiece that Raiders is, and I can appreciate that now. Crusade is OK, but it didn't make much of an impression on me when it came out.
