What can Be done to save the real original star wars trilogy from 1977-1983?
Time

Yeah, I can't believe how many reputable reviewers gave glowing reviews to the '04 set. Lowry did a great job with the scanning and grain removal, but the colors were obviously way off and the transfers were way too dark.....and then there's the sound issues.

I can only speak for myself, but I won't be buying the SE on blu-ray.

If it's a smearing similar to color bleeding, YAHR() and other aWarpSharp tricks above may help. If it's like fieldblending (that means the trails are coming from the neighbour frames - the smearing led to four-eyed startroopers) then there are a few filters to remove this. But I don't know how to use these, so it's really just a guess. I'm just hoping you'll find some solution for that. It'd be too bad if the smearing would hold back this being the best source for having the untampered trilogy.

The smearing comes from a "dirt concealment" method that was used when the DefCol laserdisc masters were created back in '92. It had something to do with using surrounding frames to hide dirt specks, pinholes, etc. Unfortunately, it probably created more problems than it fixed.

Still, they ended up being the highest quality OOT laserdiscs available, and they used those same masters for the GOUT DVDs.

Was Lang alive to comment on what he thought of Moroders version?

No, he died in 1976.

I like the Moroder version a lot- it was the first version of the film I ever saw. My Mom took me to see it at a movie theater in NYC. I was able to get a copy of the laserdisc at a reasonable price a few years ago on eBay. I'm glad they're doing another restoration of it with the newly-found footage, but I'll always associate the film with the Moroder soundtrack (and I like the color tinting as well).

STAR WARS V8 - A Final Attempt (Released)

I'm really excited about this project- I've never seen the SC, so it will be interesting to watch, especially since most of the versions of the trilogy I've seen in the last 15 years (DC/Faces/GOUT) came from the same source.

Plus- the X9 is such a phenomenal player, I'm sure the results will be great.

"...the HLD-X9 is often regarded as the very best laserdisc player ever built. It was designed for double duty playing both standard laserdiscs and the Japanese MUSE high-definition laserdiscs (which require a MUSE decoder and high-definition television). For this purpose, it has the advanced comb filter from the LD-S9 and a special narrow-bandwidth laser. I have seen this player in action. It is a massive piece of equipment, dwarfing most other LD players. I'm not sure exactly what kind of electronic magic is built into it, but the HLD-X9 produces an amazingly sharp and noiseless image that cannot be matched by any other laserdisc player I've ever seen." To be perfectly honest, I think you'd be disappointed with most of the LD transfers compared to the GOUT. The GOUT comes from the digital masters that were used to make the DC/Faces LDs, so by nature, they have less video noise than what would be introduced by even an excellent LD player. The only possible exceptions would be the X0 or X9 LD player, which in theory would produce an image equal to (or some say, better than) the GOUT.

Though, I personally have never seen one of these machines in person (they're VERY expensive, and rare) I understand there simply is nothing else to reveal every possible bit of quality from LDs.

I'd say the best now is the g-force/dark_jedi GOUT-sourced anamorphic trilogy that uses the image stabilization/anti-aliasing scripts.

I'm also kind of a fan of OCP's Classic Editions (they use the 2004 DVDs and a LD transfer to replace all the SE material). They're imperfect, but the idea of them is great. I hope someday someone fully realizes the idea by doing a 2004 DVD/GOUT hybrid (maybe using the g-force/dark_jedi GOUT project).

Frankly, I wouldn't bother with any of the LD transfers at this point (except maybe Arnie.d's V8/X9 transfer of the Japanese Special Collection that's in the works). The GOUT really kind of made all the DC/Faces LD transfers obsolete, IMO.

The G-Force/Dark Jedi transfer, is that the one based on the Japanese LDs, or is it based on the 1993s?

{.............}

Plus, looking at the screenshot page, some of those preservations look a lot sharper than GOUT.

Here's more info (+ screenshots) of the g-force stabilization project. It's sourced from the GOUT, not LD:

http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/GOUT-image-stabilization/topic/9038/page/28/

No, the features on the '93 LD set have never been re-issued. There are some preservations of them, though. Rowman's bonus discs are one, Dr. Gonzo's Supplemental disc is another, there may be others.

Have you checked the Official DVD Index here?

http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/OFFICIAL-DVD-INDEX-Star-Wars-Preservation-and-Fan-Edits/topic/2450/

Which screenshot page are you referring to? This one?:

I honestly don't see any LD screenshots that look sharper than the GOUT (more saturated, maybe).

I'm not sure where the retail disc layer break is, but I ended up putting mine right after the scene where Luke is doing saber practice with the remote on the Falcon, where it cuts to a scene on the Death Star behind a conference table. On my set-top player, it cuts to the Death Star shot, then pauses, then the door opens and the scene continues. It was the best I could find given the size of my video, because there's no motion and no dialog or obvious audio to be clipped at the pause.

FWIW, the retail layer-break on SW is right after Tarkin says "Terminate her! Immediately!", on ESB I think it's during a shot of Falcon's cockpit window before the Mynock attaches itself, in ROTJ it's right as we see Wicket's feet appear.
