My hope is that when the blu-rays are finally released without the OOT (which they probably will be), a few years down the road, when Lucas is ready to milk the blu-ray cow again, they'll be released with the OOT as a bonus. That's the only way I see it happening.
If they use the current transfers, it will give a whole new meaning to the term "Blu"-Ray. ;-)
The audio on the GOUT DVDs does sound more compressed and less dynamic than the audio on the LDs- most people seem to be in agreement on that. However, the custom DVDs made from the GOUT have taken care of that problem, fortunately.

The PAL version seems brighter- maybe that's why there's a perception of added detail? Seems counterintuitive that they'd use the NTSC for the first two, but bothered to dig up the PAL for the third.
When I get a private message, the right end of each line is cut off, so that I have to quote & reply to read the entire message.
Anybody else having this issue?

I understand that TIME and Newsweek gave SW favorable reviews, I don't know off-hand about the opinions of any popular reviewers of the day, such as Gene Shalit or Rex Reed (though I'm guessing Shalit's was positive based on the group interview he conducted with Hamill, Ford and Fisher in '77).

The story I always heard was that Jay told NBC in 2004 that he was thinking about retiring in 2009. Conan's contract was up for renegotiation at that time, so he asked that he be promised Jay's spot when he left. Jay changed his mind, but they already had a contract with Conan for him to helm the Tonight Show in '09, so they appeased Jay by giving him a 10pm show.
This seems more plausible to me than the idea of Conan demanding Jay's #1 show in 5 years regardless of whether or not Jay wanted to leave...?
Conan never had a shot to stand on his own with a decent lead-in (like Law & Order). Jay had the luxury of finding an audience and finally beating Letterman after being on the air for 2 years.

I'm supporting Conan. I think he should have a chance at the Tonight Show, just like Jay did. Jay hosted for 16 years, Conan's only had 7 months. Time for Jay to step aside. He won't- but he should.

All I know about JT is that he used to host Entertainment Tonight w/Mary Hart, and he's married to the beautiful actress Connie Sellecka. I've only heard bits and pieces of his music, and I didn't care for what I heard. Kind of watered-down, Yanni-type new-age stuff. Some new-age/atmospheric stuff is great (like Nicklaus) but JT ain't it.
It was bound to happen eventually. I don't think it will EVER sell as many tickets as SW did, though.
Nowadays, you go to see a movie once or twice and then wait for it to come out on DVD or blu-ray.
In '77, kids went to the theater multiple times, trying to sink in as much as possible before it left theaters because there was no video release of it until several years later (and most didn't have VCRs back then anyhow). Your only hope to see it again was a summer re-release the following year.
The 3D-thing is incentive to see Avatar many times since the technology isn't available for home yet, but I doubt that in today's economy people will be seeing the film 10 or 20 times theatrically.

One thing I am curious about is that when people try to restore the GOUT they never use SE footage. It seems to me that over 90% of the OT is untouched by alterations, so why not use footage from that - color-corrected of course - and just work on restoring the scenes that do differ as much as possible - rather than the whole film.
I think the stormtrooper that bangs his head on the door is the most well-loved goof in the trilogy. My cousin pointed it out to me when I got my first VHS tape in 1983 or 1984. I'd hate to see it removed.
Vader was very menacing in that film and it was very scary to me as well.
