You'll find it eventually. Check eBay & Amazon frequently. Plus, you can always get d_j's version, or the Lucasfilm Pwnage version.

Those DC LDs are notorious rotters, but the book alone is worth the price you paid, even if the discs are no good. My book didn't have a slipcover, either. I got a used set, too, so I'm wondering if the books in that set even had slipcovers to begin with?

Noo....NOOOOOOO!! I don't know much about LD deterioration over time. I hope the discs are okay, but I may never even know...

If you run your thumb around the edges of the discs, there should be no perceptible space between the layers. If you feel a separation, that means the glue is deteriorating and you'll probably have some rot on those discs.

We should ask David Bowie if he still has his U-matic bootleg copy of Star wars--lol!

So...  What's U-Matic?

It's an old broadcast videocassette format:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U-matic

I actually have one that contains a TV appearance with my Dad that I'm taking someplace next week to have transferred to DVD. The place I'm taking it to is pretty cool in that they do a lot of work for KINO video.

The DC copy of the book never had a slipcover. Factory sealed boxes were so tight it probably would have shredded shoving it in!

I gave up on trying to get the discs back in the box, and store them separately to this day.

They must have fixed the box at some point, because I have no trouble storing all the contents in mine. Mine is a later pressing because it has the corrected esb disc. One of my ROTJ discs has some rot, though. :-/

Hmm, it is surprising how tilted towards the other side this thread is compared to the one a few months ago.  So let me help push things back the "right" way. ^_~

Nope.  Wouldn't buy it.  It's not the original.  The movies don't need to be tweaked.  They don't need anyone's meddling fingerprints.  Just clean it up and slap it on a disc and make them look exactly as they did on opening nights of 1977, 80, and 83.  Simple.

Soooo....you're one of those impossible-to-please fanboys I keep hearing about on other websites! LOL. :-P

Seriously though, you're right, the movies don't "need" to be tweaked, but I didn't notice matte boxes or lines when I saw the films theatrically, so if they were removed for a future blu-ray release- and that was ALL that was done to the films, I'd be 100% fine with it. (But then, the removal of the cobra-shield from Raiders doesn't bother me either.)

Would the removal of matte lines affect my enjoyment of the films? Not at all.
Do CGI dewbacks, etc affect my enjoyment of the films? Very much so. That's basically what it boils down to for me.

Also- the soundtrack is very important. I would definitely NOT want some sort of 2004-era monstrosity included as the only sound mix option. At least one original mix should be included, but I've always loved the '93/'95 PCM soundtrack from the LDs.

Thanks, Mielr. They look okay to me, and as you mentioned the actual discs are better in reality. The ESB emperor clip looked especially good.

It stinks that I can't find the LE of ANH.

Yet, upon approaching the section from the side, I saw a thick black box sitting in there. Could it be? I walked closer. Was it really? Sitting in front of one of the rows was the 1993 Definitive Collection. I checked it out, verified the contents, and purchased the damn thing. It was $20 which seems like a great deal - typical price is anywhere from $50 to $200 on ebay, based on condition.

I can't help but think they are still holding some deleted scenes back. Unless there are easter eggs yet to be found...

Well, the only ones I can think that are not included are on the BR set:

From Star Wars I believe there's some more footage of Luke, Han, Chewie and the princess wandering around the Death Star. Of course you could say that the whole Lost Cut is an alternate scene.

From Empire there's 3PO and R2 discussing the Wampas (not included in the Wampa deleted scenes on this set). There's also Lando rescuing Luke.

From Jedi, there must be some extra footage from the Rancor (the musical cue on the CD is longer than the film).

There were shots in the ROTJ trading cards of Luke hanging from the ceiling grate in the Rancor dungeon- a scene that was cut from the film. Apparently that's one scene that has been held back.

Does anyone know for sure if the scene in ESB where Luke's facial bandages are removed is included? There are no reports of Easter Eggs either, even though one of the LFL people hinted there would be.

There doesn't seem to be a lot of new deleted scenes from SW '77 on this set, either.

Having lurked the various spots since May 4th, I can say they all have THAT GUY. Sometimes it's gotta be the same person, sometimes it's a guy just like him. If it's a very star warsy place, there's probably 3 of them. When somebody sets him straight he says something inane or ignores it completely, waits a week and starts in again. It's like having the shittiest mascot ever.

I know - they post on my YouTube uploads every day. There was just something about the tone of that one, (& saying that the OT was meant to be watched on a lesser home-video format) that sent up a red flag for me.

A couple B&N stores near me apparently have ESB and ROTJ 2006 dvds in stock. No ANH. Same for used movie/record stores.

Should I buy these discs? I've searched endlessly on the web and can't find screenshots of the non-anamorphic transfers. I would like to know how good/bad the quality really is before making my purchases.

If you want them- better get them while you can. I own 2 sets, which I got before dark_jedi's anamorphic Gout came out, but they serve now as backup in case the dye layer in my d_j versions craps out at some point in the future. :-P

Not the best presentation, but I have few uploads on YouTube from the GOUT. It will give you an idea, though they're not NEARLY as good of course as the actual discs:

Star Wars coming to Blu Ray (UPDATE: August 30 2011, No! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!)

If you truly want to watch the old and original versions watch them on their original format. The way they were meant to be watched on VHS!

By wanting the original works of the movies on Blu-ray you are essentially being a hypocrite. You say Lucas shouldn't revise his master pieces, but on the other hand you want his original works to be changed into HD on Blu-ray? So many overrating hypocrites, you people are people being ridiculous.

Oh, and by the way it is his Saga of movies and he can do whatever he wants with it. You people have no right telling him what he is doing is wrong when you would not even have Star Wars if it weren't for him. Its disgusting how these so called "die hard fans" are so quick to downgrade any Lucas does with his own works.

That has GOT to be the SAME PERSON who wrote this bit of wisdom on one of my YouTube uploads:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rKtciRCVpFE

"....If blu-ray remastering were applied to the originals, it would only serve to enhance the imperfections. So the dvds of the original cuts from a few years back are probably your best bet. Plenty hardcore fans even boycotted the laserdisc remastering from 20yrs ago, so blu-ray remastering would only change it further....."

So, let me get this straight-----the OT has too many imperfections to be seen on an HDTV screen?!

If George was to give in to pressure in releasing the Original Unaltered Trilogy (or the Classic Trilogy as he now calls them) on Blu-ray, especially now with all the negative attention, he would inform us that he would be sending the original film stock to Lowry Digital, make a future proofed 4k (or higher) scan......but insisted on cleaning up the movies.....fixing mistakes, composites.....poor visual effects.....but nothing too drastic......no Greedo shooting first,....no Jabba in ANH.....

Would that be acceptable?

J

That would be acceptable to me. I've said before, that I would have happily accepted the faulty coloring of the 2004 discs, if the films were the 1977,1980 & 1983 versions in all other respects.

I'd also accept re-compositing shots to improve matte lines, removal of the boxes around the ships, etc. I'm actually pretty agreeable about that sort of stuff, which I know a lot of others aren't.

But, the Wampa changes, the changes to the cloud city/bespin scenes, mos eisley, cantina changes, jedi rocks, ewok celebration changes, Hayden force ghost...... NOT acceptable.

The reason why it was in there is that it was mistakenly put in the OLD definitive making of ESB book. It was a mistake that was carried over into the new one. I'm not sure what he could replace it with, as there are no mattes of the Falcon used in Echo Base. Maybe any of the other mattes... I'm not sure if the 4th printing has started yet, I've messaged Rinzler a few times on various formats but he remains silent.

Which book is that? Are you talking about "The Art of ESB"?

I wonder if there's even going to be a 4th printing.

Have you seen the blu-ray of "2001" ?  It's the reason I bought a blu-ray player.

I feel that way about the Rocky Horror bluray. It looks soooo good- Lovely film-grain with no EE :-)

They screwed up the tinting in one shot, and the music that runs over the end credits isn't the original, but those are very minor issues imo.

There are a few really funny 5* reviews on the Amazon site that are clearly meant to be satirical. In fact, the current "most helpful" 5* review is obviously a joke. Here's one that's been around a while that I think is hilarious:

Luke Skywalker - guy from the earlier episodes. I don't know too much about him because the older episodes are a bit too boring to watch.

That IS hilarious. It sounds A LOT like some of the people who torment me on my YouTube channel, except that those people are serious. :-/

Yes, I'm still in for the full six-film set no matter what. (23%, 138 Votes)

I'll buy them, but I won't be happy about it. (14%, 83 Votes)

Only the original trilogy box set (Episodes IV - VI) for me. (3%, 20 Votes)

I'm waiting for the 3D conversions. (1%, 7 Votes)

Only the prequel trilogy box set (Episodes I - III) for me. (1%, 4 Votes)

On the facebook page, someone added up how much money they had spent on star wars over the years- over $16,000.

I know I've also spent thousands over the past 28-or so years. Makes a comment like "grow up" sting that much more, and makes watching bootlegs all the more satisfying.

Not one...more....penny!

I bought that too. :-)

I also bought another set of them as backup (sans tin) from Amazon when the prices went down.

I remember SOMEONE here making fun of me for that at the time. ;-)

Though, I don't really watch them now that I have d_j's anamorphic versions. I'm still glad I got them, though. I was thinking recently about selling my second set, but instead I think I'll get rid of that 2nd set of Faces LDs I bought ages ago.

d_j, I watched ROTJ BLU last nite (I had checked it previously, but not watched the whole thing in one sitting), and it looks spectacular! Really great. Thanks again, so much!

BTW, you've mentioned that you were able to get more detail on the BLU discs than on the V3-- how did you manage this given the source material you had to work with?

Just read this on jeditemplearchives.com;

<span></span>Latest Star Wars Saga DVDs Recalled? No Longer An Opportunity To Buy?

We have learned of a rumor. Please take this with a grain of salt until more in confirmed, but one of our readers has attempted to purchase some of the currently available Star Wars films on DVD. He was informed by a Walmart employee that all have been recalled. I have also not been able to find any in stock at the moment. Have we all missed the boat trying to grab the current versions? Does this mean that forever our beloved films will have Ewoks blinking? Could Lucasfilm, Ltd. be futilely trying to get rid of remaining existing versions of the Star Wars saga? More on this later as the story develops. But let us know if your experiences are different.

Link: http://www.jeditemplearchives.com/content/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=8447

If true, that's odd because it's been confirmed that there will be no new DVD release to accompany the blurays.

I hope that everybody who wanted official copies of the GOUT have bought them by now, just in case.

Yeah, I'm now definitely decided to stick with the broadcasts as sources. The difference is so small, that it would be practically imperceptible in motion and I do not want to buy those Blu-Rays.

With all the new additions to the blu-rays, I gather it would make it quite a bit harder for you to use them as a source anyhow- just more stuff that you have to remove or replace with alternate footage.
