Star Wars Blu Ray Impressions

The Star Wars blu-ray was just called 'high definition sadness' on the Big Bang Theory.

and a second joke about starting to watch the movie before George changes it again.   and a third joke that their conversation is better then the blu-ray.

Great news! At least these blu-rays have the reputation they deserve, so our efforts haven't been for naught.

I STILL have not bought them, nor rented them, and even my desire to rent them gets smaller and smaller as the days go by.

BTW, how 'bout "Occupy Skywalker Ranch"? ;-)

OBITUARY - Star Wars Fullscreen/Pan and Scan versions. R.I.P.

That's not laser rot, it's something on the film. You can tell because it's horizontally stretched due to the anamorphic lens.

Looks like someone accidentally spilled India ink on it. :)

There's a black blob similar to that in ROTJ Gout, at the end of the film as Luke looks down at Leia (lower right part of frame):

The frame kind of jerks a bit at that point, as well.

I got rid of all my P&S vhs tapes ages ago (I never owned any P&S versions on LD or DVD).

I never cared for P&S, even when it was the only version available. I was always aware that something was missing, most notably when Luke tilts his head back after Leia kisses him in ESB, his head disappears off the screen, and we miss his self-satisfied smirk, and in the SW throne room, we got Luke and Leia OR Leia and Han OR Leia with half of Luke's face and half of Han's face.

The demise of P&S is no loss, imo.

I've honestly only seen him in Star Wars.  However, knowing he was a horror actor, he and Vince Price must have made a great duo!

It's a really fun film- I'm a huge Price fan, too, so the two of them playing off each other just makes it doubly great.

I think it's still available on DVD, if you want to seek it out. I have the "Midnite Movies" edition from several years ago, that has Theatre Of Blood on the flip side (another fun Price film), but I think Madhouse was non-anamorphic letterboxed, unfortunately. I think it was oop for a while, then re-released with the last wave of Price re-releases, but I haven't seen that edition so I don't know if it's anamorphic now.

Help me identify this ILM-owned couch with your behind-the-scenes photos
Time

Seems to me I've seen photos of ILM employees lounging around on couches- screening dailies, etc. I think the pics were mostly in ILM-related documentaries.

Empire of Dreams might have some pics.

There was also a kind of "home movie" I watched not too long ago (it may have been on YouTube), shot by one of the ILM guys during that time period. It features lots of pics of each of the people involved, but I can't remember the name of it.

...and WE get the bad rap!!!!!
Time

I don't know why that one in particular got picked on- maybe because "Han Shot First" has become a catchphrase (?) The clip of the '77 scroll I posted was banned only in Germany a few years back, supposedly because of music copyright issues.

The Han video had less hits than the ESB clip I posted, and FAR fewer than the ROTJ clip. The Han video was linked to in a CNN.com article once, though.

- Star Wars does need to be updated to maintain its impact on new generations.

Then why does Wizard of Oz continue to be beloved by every generation since 1939?  I have friends whose kids love that movie, no updates, just good ol 1939 sets/effects in the backround.  Star Wars would be just as beloved today if the OOT version were on Bluray or DVD.  Lucas has put this in everyones mind by updating the movies that they NEEDED to be updated but I never heard anyone complain abuot updating them in 1991, 1992, 1993....

Great example.

Oz was a 37 or 38-year old movie when I saw it for the first time. It didn't matter that it was an "old" movie. Star wars is approaching that age for kids seeing for the first time. I understand that there is a greater jump in FX technology from '77-'11 than there was from '39-'77, but for a kid seeing Star Wars for the first time at age 6 or 7, it's going to make a big impression and they're not going to notice, or care.

Does the UK have the death penalty?

Civilzed countries have abandoned the death penalty.

(yes this means I just called the USA uncivilized).

Makes me think of one of my favorite childhood songs-

...Anne Boleyn was once King Henry's wife, until he had the axeman part her hair. But that was many, many years ago still she comes back at night to tell him so...

Info & Offer: Laserdisc, I have an X9 for use... if anyone wants to use it?
Time

Yeah, that was truly frightening. I definitely think I was too young to have seen the movie at that time- clearly my Mother should have paid more attention to the "R" rating! (BTW-Is it true that the director deliberately undersaturated the colors for the DVD release?)

I also saw "Magic" w/Anthony Hopkins around the same time- another film that I probably shouldn't have seen. :-P

As far as the X9 goes- it would definitely be great for films that have otherwise-unreleased versions on LD, but wasn't it proven in the X0 thread that SW-on-LD sucks compared to the Gout? It was a while ago, but I remember some pretty disappointing-looking clips.

Dracula '79: another film shot by Gil Taylor that's had its colors screwed up on re-releases...:)

...and with music by John Williams! ;-)

It also has one of the seriously creepiest scenes in all of movie history... when the guy meets his vampire daughter in the sewer.  One of the few scenes I have avoided watching again.

So true!

I first saw the movie on cable TV in 1980 or so (my Mom's friend had HBO back in the early days) and that one scene freaked me out so bad I was afraid to sleep with the lights out for several days, at least. I think it was the solid-black eyeballs that did it. :-P

There's close to 600 now. There was another "boycott" page on FB that got there a couple weeks before I put this one up, and they have a couple hundred more members, last I checked.

Unfortunately, it needs to be a LOT more than 600.

A LOT doesn't even begin to describe it. I don't think it could even make a dent with gong into the millions, sadly. How long did it take for it to accumulate 600? Maybe if it continues mathematically, it'll get bigger as it goes.

The page has been up since Aug 28th. The "other" blu-ray boycott page has over 800 members (many of which, I'm sure, are the same people who make up our page's nearly 600, so there's an overlap there).

If it makes anyone feel any better, my four OOT YouTube clips have nearly 2 million hits combined, but they've been up since '06.
