STAR WARS: The Torrents thread

the reason it does not appear, is because when you search for it, you don't check the "including dead torrents" box. A torrent is assumed to be dead when there are no seeds for it at the moment.
Unfortunately I can't seed this as I'm currently seeding some other files people in this forum requested... If you're patient though, some seeds will eventually apear.

Well, here's a suggestion: The characters and all the various objects that you placed as layers in front of the red background don't blend naturally with it. What I do is set the front layer transparency to 95%. Then, I use the eraser tool in Paint Shop Pro (I think Photoshop has it also with the desired parameters but I'm not certain), setting the hardness to 0 and using a very big eraser size (100 pixel size for a 1000x1000 image) . What I do then is run the perimeter of the figure, (not draggind the eraser, it is best done if you makes a spot-by spot perimeter), only letting the edges of the eraser touch my image. You will see that your figures will blend far more naturally with the background that way.

If a may put an exception here: Many municipalities "force" the residents to a particular architectural standard in order of the neighborhood to maintain it's style, so there are some cases that you can't fully control how your house will be.
But besides that, the whole house-thing analogy is not a proper one. In legal terms, yes, GL can do whatever he wants with his movie. But using a more common sense-ethical point of view, someone building his house has any right to do whatever he wants, because he will be the only one living there. That is not the case with art that it's intent is to counteract with other people. If we follow the "house" arguement to conclusion, we have to assume that GL made the SW trilogy purely for himself (like a house builder would), and therefore should not release it in theatres either.
Moreover, noone has to make the house in a way other people like, because he alone will pay for his house. On the contrary, a film is a self-funding creation. Artists make art that at least some other people have to like, because if they don't the creator will be broke and owing everybody.

The truth with SW and any other piece of art is that it doesen't affect only it's owner/creator. And if GL would be a little more straightforward to himself, he would see that nobody argues about him changing the movies, the whole issue is about releasing the original versions too. If you build a new house, you don't have to go and wreck your old residence, you can always rent it to someone.
After all, the original versions, and the support of the fans who want them is what brought him into the financial position to re-make them.
In a more artistic point of view: Many artists have created different versions of their masterpieces (Van Gogh's sunflowers, Da Vinci's Maiden of the rokcs and so on and so on...)
No one EVER destroyed or renounced the past versions, because this would be a direct insult primarily to himself, but also to the masterpiece and the peolpe that admired it.
I could understand someone not releasing his art to the public for personal reasons (like GL not releasing the OT in DVD) but denying his creation's existence (like he has so elequently stated) is another thing.
This is called ingratitude towards the people who liked his work and supported it, making him who he is today.

Video Editing: Where Do I Start?
Time
I'll make some quesses over to what might have caused it:
1) The file was grabbed and encoded from a specific source, but the framerate was incorrectly selected (E.G. The source was PAL 25fps and the encoder selected a NTSC 29.97 fps output without performing pulldown.)
2) Sometimes the audio and video streams appear to be out of sync, when video is to complex for the pc to process in real time. Outcome: the pc takes some time to render the frames, giving an output fps slower than it should. Audio, which is much easier to decompress plays at real speed and therefore appears to be "early" in comparison to the video. But this problem should most commonly appear when using mpeg-4 files, which are more cpu-demanding, not with mpeg or mpeg-2 files.
3) Damaged stream headers could cause desync. That could be an outcome of a bad download.

Solutions:
1) If the video or audio stream frequency is wrong, they can be adjusted using Virtual Dub. If you wanna avoid any sound pitch alteration, I suggest changing the video framerate (desired fps = available video frames / audio stream length in seconds). Virtual dub can also change audio frequency without altering the pitch.
2) Get a newer CPU, or download lighter codecs (ffdshow ffdshow 2004.10.12 is the lightest I have ever used, giving the lowest cpu consumption)
3) Virtual Dub can fix this problem, simply by loading the file, and saving it using "direct stream copy option".

As to your question about converitng files to .mpg: After a lot of searching and headaching, "Aare AVI to VCD DVD SVCD MPEG Converter" was the only prog I found that satisfied me. Unfortunatelly it is not a freeware prog, you will have to "try and buy" it.
You could also use adobe premiere with certain plugins to enable .mpg output, using Morgan MJPEG v3 codec.
But if the programs you are using accept .mpg, they most probably accept .m2v also. In that case, any demuxer would do the job (even DVD Decrypter can demux the streams when in IFO mode)

Edit: The last paragraph was not neccessary: I just saw that this question has been answered, sorry.

I am currently encoding Wookie Groomer ANH splitscreen to a more "downloadable" verision as per request of some members of this forum.

Wookie Groomer: do you have any objection to this version being made public?

I am using DivX 5.21 pro codec multiple pass encoding and audio streams encoded to mp3 96Kbps joint stereo.
One problem I was facing is that because of the 3 different audio streams, it would be difficult to fit the movie in a 700MB CD without conciderable quality loss.
So I am thinking towards an ~900MB version of each movie, with the objective that all three documentaries would fit in a DVD.
Any other suggestions?

Apart from what Rikter stated, I also use DVDDecrypter because it allows you to manually set the layer break in DL DVD's, when Nero does not. One other main reason to use it is because it is freeware (I always have a strong sympathy towards freeware applications). Nero is also a very heavy program with occasional malfunctions, and apart from the fact that it can make compilations, I see no other reason to use it when Alcohol 120% is around. Lastly, Nero sometimes causes a conflict when auto insert notification is disabled in windows XP.
Hence: I HATE Nero.

PS: Someone previously stated that you can burn a working DVD using the compilation option in Nero. True as that may be, it is not suggested, because then the files are not placed on the DVD in the order they should. As a concequence, the Disc will be "less readable" and the seeking time will increase.

Info Wanted: Which OT project version were available on...?
Time
First of all, anamorphic discs do sometimes have the black bars, just not as big as the 4:3 would, because the film aspect ratio is not always 16:9, it may also be ~2.5:1. That being said, the Dr.Gonzo set does have black bars also, just not as wide as the TR47 set.
One good way to see if it is anamorphic or not is to capture a frame with a player and see it's aspect ratio.
Secondly, in my experience, if someone does not know which version he has, he most definatelly has the Gr.Gonzo set.
And last, the versions that have easter eggs IIRC are: a)Dr.Gonzo b)EditDroid (only the ANH disc) and c)Isomix.
Isomix does not have a commentary track, and EditDroid hasn't been around for so long, so there is only one logical conclusion...

Seems like a big favor but I just figured I'd give it a shot.

Since it seems Rikter has too many things on his head right now (after all, bh 003, Editdroid ROTJ and coverart dvd are promised), I think I could do the encoding and upload them once I finish my ESB download. If you are patient enough, and provided xavier and the guys over myspleen will let me, I'll post them soon.
If on the other hand you are too impatient, I could send them to you (no charge whatsoever) if you pm me with your adress.

Where are you d'loading the files from?
As far as I know, these torrents are available in Torrentsearch and Torrentreactor named as Pre SE LD rip.
Torrentreactor lets you know if a torrent is currently seeded and if the tracker is properly running, so you could check that. But as I can see, Torrentreactor is down at the moment (Is that a coincidense?). As far as the "ConnectException:Connextion refused" message, It seems to me that you have an instace of your torrent manager not properly shut down so you are refused a second connection by the tracker. In that case rebooting should fix the problem. Another explanation would be that you blocked several ports via a firewall, and the tracker does not allow firewalled users, but I think that is unlikely...

Edit: Fixed wrong link

How bad can it get? (The changes to the films)
Time
Padme cheats on Anakin with Jar Jar. Result of this "unholy bond" are two children, Luke and Leia Bings (who will afterwards be given the name"Skywalker" to avoid any diplomatic issues between the people of Naboo and the Gungans). Joda reveals this terrible secret to Anakin, who furius as he becomes, turns to the Dark Side to take revenge from Jar Jar. Anakin is killed in the fight, and Jar Jar becomes Palpatines apprentice to take Anakin's place as Darth Vader.
Jar Jar is furius with Joda telling the secret to Anakin and turns against the Jedi counsil, killing every single Jedi except Joda and Obi Wan who manage to escape. He then discovers that the Jedi were planning to constuct the Death Star and take over the repuplic. He steals the plans and gives it to the supreme chancellor who decides to construct this Space Station to protect the republic from the Jedi.
But Joda and Obi Wan conceive another evil plan: They kidnap Padme's children. The boy and the gilr are raised under their supervision, given the belief that the republic has turned into an evil emipire, so they can in time fight against it, and revive the Jedi faith and their evil dominion.

Edit: Note that my version is in full accordance with Rebel's 11_38 version, of which I am very fond!

STAR WARS in 3-D!
Time
I don't see why it would be a bad idea. Now, whether the outcome will be good or bad is another subject of discussion.
But I'm fine with the different releases, as long as the previous ones remain available for the public.
I don't believe that Lucas is gonna push it so far as to make the 2-D versions unavailable once the 3-D is out...

LOL! Removing FBI warnings was the sole reason I started my way to DVD editing...
This is off-topic, I know, but these warnings are so irritating!
I mean, wouldn't the companies be legaly covered if they put the disclaimers as a link in the main menu, or at least not prohibit the FF operation?
Why do they have to annoy us each time we insert the disk? And particularly for the Star Wars trilogy DVD (PAL): The disclaimer is 1 minute long for christ's shake! and you can't fast forward! That's disrespect towards the paying customer if you ask me...

MeBeJedi has been very accurate in his directions. However, I have an objection:
It seems to me that when it comes to DVD format, you are a newbie. In that sense, trying to make DVD's with menus etc without knowing what .vob .ifo and .bup are, is too ambitious. I would recomend that you played around with programms like DVD decrypter, Smartripper, DVDshrink, IFOedit or DVDremake until you make yourself comfortable with DVD structure, and then try to make your copy.
