Two Questions
Time
DVD is MPG. What, specifically, are you trying to do? Are you trying to get the video stream by itself?

To play "music only", you would first need to get the music soundtrack. There's no way to remove the dialogue and speech without causing serious audio problems. Once you get the music, you will remaster the DVD by combining the video and new audio.

Action scenes from the SC caps look better because they don't have as much smearing as the THX-mastered versions. Laserman explained the process used (as well as the mistakes made during) to me, but I don't recall where that post was. I'll try to find it.

[EDIT] Found it!

"They did a temporal noise reduction pass, so it compared frames before and after to try and identify dirt and other crap - in scenes with not a lot of contrast differential it struggled, and copied parts of previous and future frames into the current frame - unfortunately it was also iterative, so the frame got processed and the processed frame was then used for the next frame compare - resulting in those gorram trails."

The SC's weren't mastered by THX, so while there is more "noise", there are fewer added video artifacts as well. As such, with the computer resources and software at our disposal, it would make more sense to do noise removal on the SCs (i.e. TooT), rather than risk more complicated artifact removal on the THX LDs.

As I said before, the X0 Project knows far too much about these LDs. But this is an excellent example of why the project is taking so long, and expected to take even longer - there are a lot of technical decisions to be considered and made before actual video correction can be started in earnest.

Did anyone see The Apprentice last night?
Time
I was watching an interview - I believe it was Martha Stewart - and she was asked if it really made sense to watch these people for 13 weeks before picking the last person for the job. Interestingly enough, and this makes sense in hindsight, she actually preferred the concept of watching a person work over a long period of time before choosing them for the job.

Now, obviously this wouldn't be necessary for all positions, and is logistically impossible for large companies, but to see someone's work habitats and behavior over time before deciding to hire them would certainly tell you a lot more than an interview or two and a few letters of recommendations.

You know, something occurred to me today. I realized that one of the reasons that I like these boards is that there aren't any (or, at least, very few and short-lived) discussions about what SW certain concepts mean or represent in the films (The Force, what was Palpatine really thinking, etc.) I got really annoyed with people on TF.n bringing up half-brained or completely unsupported opinions about aspects of SW - the worst of which were ultimately argued as "all opinions are equal" or "It's a fantasy world, so anything is possible."

Having spent way too many years delving into various SW materials searching for evidence against various claims really took its toll on me. Maybe I'll find and post one of my own theories that I came up during a burst of inspiration. It was actually kind of fun to write.

"In every comparison I've seen, the Faces shots are the worst: very blurry."

"Keep in mind that on a lot of players, there's this weird smearing effect with CLV. And none with CAV"

Along these lines, did your comparisons ever include the Battle of Yavin, because this segment of the Faces discs (Disc 2, side 1) is in CAV as well. You may find that they look identical (except for contrast). If so, then it is your player creating the blur, rather than the disc itself.

(Yes....we, the X0 Project, know wayyyyyyy too damn much about these discs. )

Info Wanted: Dark City workprint - does it exist?

Oh Cool! I LOVE this movie. What's different?

[EDIT] Damn! That sounds intriguing. I always wished they had not included the beginning voiceover, but unfortunately I understood why: Dumb audiences.

(Although, I should add that my wife and I got to the theater late, and I first saw this film from the point where he is looking for his wallet in the diner, so I got to see the film without suffering the intro. We stayed for the next showing to see what we missed.)

"My point is that to some it may be perfect, but to others it may be broke, and may need work. "

And while you definitely fall into the later category, you feel this compelling urge to post in a place comprised mostly of people who like it the way it is - whether they see it as being "perfect" or can appreciate the blemishes.

Do you often seek attention from the wrong kind of people? Is there even a "right kind of person" for a person like you?
