ORIGINAL STAR WARS TRILOGY OUT 09/2006 BY LUCASFILM

“See the title crawl to Star Wars before it was known as Episode IV — A New Hope; see the pioneering, if dated, motion-control model work on the attack on the Death Star; groove to 'Lapti Nek' or the Ewok celebration song like you did when you were a kid; and, yes, see Han Solo shoot first,” according to Lucasfilm.

Dammit...I KNEW I saw that there. See folks...revisionism already.

Yeah, these X0 files are staying put.

"Don't be pissed that the OT is now on DVD"

Respectfully, it's not here yet, and the devil is in the details. Lucas didn't exactly make it obvious beforehand that Hayden replaced Shaw in the '04 release, and nobody believed the leaked pics of that scene were true. It's not that I'm not happy about this, I'm just concerned what the final product will look like. My X0 files may still be necessary.

"even if this was all about prosecuting fan projects (he doesn't need a DVD release to do this though)."

It should be enough to suck the wind out of many a preservationist's sails. Keep in mind that the '04 set, despite ridiculous color, audio and content changes, still sold tremendously well. Hell, the O-OT is being sold as an "added bonus". You could look at it as Lucas making sure his loudest detractors are forced to buy his bastardized editions in addition to their favorite version.

I knew he'd never have the balls to sell them seperately.

"which was taking its sweet time despite a disproportionate level of hype, I thought I'd register a quick LOL here."

Forgive us for having lives.

As I said before, I'm not deleting my master files any time soon. Anyone who thinks this DVD release will be the end-all-be-all apparently has a short memory in regards to the mastering disaster that is the '04 release - in terms of audio and video - when taking into account LFL's monetary and technical resources. We'll see if lessons were learned or not.

"When you guys heard the news...did anybody else feel "sad" or weird....like they knew it was never going to happen and accepted it and now that we can have it....we dont want it? "

Considering how much more work ANH was going to need, it felt like a huge weight was lifted off my shoulders - but I'm not getting rid of my source files yet.

"if they include the Star Wars commentary created for the Classic Edition."

That's a good idea. I think it's a safe bet these new ones won't have one.

"Anyway, shit - clearly they DID read this forum. They're stealing our fucking ideas! Original crawl and now this:"

Actually, that'll be good ammunition at TF.n for all the dudes who keep insisting that Han and Greedo shot together because the "official DVDs" say so (and even more so to the dingbats who say that "Han Shot First" makes no sense because in the OT, Greedo never even shot. )

"I really hope the transfer has been done properly, with no crushed blacks or unnatural colour boosting."

Like I said, there's a thousand ways to screw it up. We'll see if LFL learned from their first release.

"I'm not saying it wasn't a contributing factor, it more than likely most DEFINITELY was, but LFL Marketing has been itching to put these on DVD since the format first showed up. No joke. Jim Ward has been pushing for it for awhile now. He finally got it. This was probably going to happen sooner or later--but that IS where you come in. It happened sooner, a LOT sooner than anyone thought, and a lot of that has to do with the demand and this place putting in the work.

but it's not the ONLY reason. Economics is playing the biggest role, let's be real. LFL wants something for the 4th quarter to increase numbers. What better than a double-dip of the 2004's (A triple dip, actually) with the originals being a special feature? C'mon."

For once, I am entirely in agreement with The Bizzle. I'm sure LFL has its own share of people who are doing this for love of the O-OT, and well as those who are in it for the money as well.

There's many reasons to explain why this is happening, and most of them are most likely true. Regardless, it's happening.

"I don't normally curse in the forums but...... but"

I've done it once, I believe.

"Some of the worst official dvd releases out there for movies have simply been laser masters dumped onto dvd with no care involved. And that's exactly what we'll be getting from the company that at one time was at the forefront of producing quality presentations."

I've worried about this scenario as well. Lucas can't really win with this release, so it would be easy for him to release a mediocre version under the guise of "giving the fans what they want". Still, at the very least, it gives us the best source material we could ask for for future fan edits.

"there is NO reason to use cleaned up footage from the 2004 version"

No, but then comes the debate - should it be cleaned up at all? Or at the very least, cleaned up better than was done with the '04 DVDs (color correction, etc.)

[EDIT] Ran across this at the Basher's Sanctuary at TF.n: "And anyone else notice that the press release says 'Star Wars' and not 'A New Hope'

The DVDs are listed as 'attractively priced'

I have a bad feeling about this.

FANS: Let's just say we'd like to avoid any special editions.

LUCAS: Well, that's the trick, isn't it? And it's going to cost you
something extra. $999.99 in advance.

^ LOL

"Now that the originals WILL be released on video--is this gonna impact the projects momentum?"

All depends. This sounds great, but the QC on this DVD release had better be better than that of the previous release - in both video and audio.

This could truly be the greatest release ever seen - and yet there are a thousand ways it could be screwed up. I'm hopeful, but wary.

Besides, there's still a lot to be said about finishing the best possible LD transfer ever attempted. I think it's safe to say that, had people not shown so much interest and tireless effort in creating such a version, LFL might never have gotten around to this.

Get a room, guys.

I'm a Coke person, though one in a while I have to take a break from it. I've tried some of the Coke variants (except for the new Coke in the black can or whatever. Coke One or Zero or something like that. Just doesn't look appealing to me.)

As for root beer, I like A&W, but my wife prefers Mug. She says it's not as sweet. We both dislike Barq's tremendously.

I was a big Mountain Dew fan as a kid, but not so much anymore. I can drink Dr. Pepper and Pepsi if there is no Coke.

The real story of what happened to Qui-Gon:

________________________________________________________________________________

INT. SKYWALKER RANCH - LARGE CONFERENCE ROOM

George LUCAS, Rick McCALLUM, Ben BURTT and Rob COLEMAN sit in a row in front of an assortment of journalists.
Posters of Episode I and a variety of props from the film decorate the room.

COLEMAN: . . . .so as you can see that's a lot more special effects than have ever been done for a film of this scale

JOURNALIST: Mr Lucas, now that the first installment of the new Star Wars Trilogy has hit the screens . . .

LUCAS smiles and nods.

JOURNALIST: . . . I was just wondering how you might explain the differences between the death of Liam Neeson's character and the Death of Ben Kenobi

LUCAS: Well you see those two events were always meant to mirror one another, like in a symphony - they are both meant to reinforce the other . . .

JOURNALIST: (interrupting) Sorry, what I meant Mr Lucas is that in this film Liam Neeson's character, Qui-Gon, is killed and his body is then cremated in an elaborate funeral scene

LUCAS nods politely

JOURNALIST: (continues) But then in the original Star Wars . . .

McCALLUM: (interrupting) Episode Four, A New Hope

JOURNALIST: (Pauses) Yes . . . that one . . . well Ben Kenobi disappears when he is killed?

Long pause as room becomes deathly silent. BURTT, COLEMAN and McCALLUM shift in their seats.

LUCAS: Umm. . . well . . . err . . . well . . . you see . . .umm . . . the thing is about poetry . . . and fresco painting . . . errr . . . (trails of)

Silence again as LUCAS furiously leafs through his notes

McCALLUM: This is something that I'm sure George has thought about and it will be spelled out in excrutiating detail in the next two films . . . such a bold move . . . simply awesome . . .

LUCAS: Yes, yes . . thought about . . . next two films . . .yes

BURTT: (chuckles) George is hardly going to fiddle with something that has been Star Wars lore for the past twenty years without having a very good reason for it . Don't worry, it will all be crystal clear and fully understood by the time Episode Three is released.

LUCAS nods enthusiastically as he removes a handkerchief and wipes his brow.
