"Overly sensitive people rarely do."

Nah, they're just de-sensitized to it.

"Well, there's another issue that gets confused. I believe due process extends to citizens, but not to aliens. I don't think we should be "disappearing" our citizens, but as for aliens, screw 'em."

Just to throw out this thought - they are "inalienable HUMAN rights", not American rights. The belief is that all people should have these rights. To not bestow them to others who come into our country is a bit of a contradiction, though I admit that in actual practice, it can cause many problems as well.

Sudden blockiness of video while editing in PPro 2.0 - Problem solved!

I wonder if maybe running the program through Womble and creating a new MPEG might work. I don't know much about Womble, but if it could write a new MPEG from the old one with a minimum of recoding, you might create a copy with no flags or markers that could trip up Premiere?

ADM's the expert on that. I'll drag him in here....

Dot crawl is a whole 'nother beast.

"I hope and pray that the X0 version doesn't have it in its crawl..."

Sorry...

BTW, excellent post from TF.n:

Um, are people so naive to think that this is done out of anything other than profit-reasons? The reasons for this release were very clearly explained to us by various representatives of Lucasfilm. To sum up the points of the history of this release, per the marketing department of Lucasfilm:

-the initial idea was to release the 2004 OT-SE yet again, but this time the draw would be that you could buy them individually
-probably because they realised that nobody in their right mind would buy this--and encouraged by the failure of the 2005 re-release--Jim Ward thought it best to present to Lucas the concept of finally releasing the OOT, as it is something that Ward had been wanting to release on DVD for some time; the profits lost to LD bootlegs was also a strong selling point in their pitch
-inevitably, a new transfer was not done and Ward was forced to salvage the 1993 laserdisk tapes, undoubtedly implying that Lucas agreed that they should take back the profit lost to bootleggers but refused to spend a dime on the new product; the laserdisk master would inevitably nullify the bootleg market since it is equivalent to an "Official bootleg" and so this was deemed acceptable for release
-because the quality of the OOT was so poor, the sales tactic was inevitably shifted to the OOT as "bonus" feature; Steve Sansweet then reported something to the effect that this release was not for the die hard fans but for those who don't care about which version they own

so to sum it up: this release started as yet another way to sell the same product, and the OOT was initially attached to give extra marketing leverage and eliminate lost profit due to bootlegs. It is also not for die hards but for those who "dont care about which version they get" (who assumingly don't really care for the OOT and already have the OT-SE from 2004 and 2005--which actually makes this entire release quite illogical). So no, it was never about "caring" about "fans" about customer satisfaction, or anything like that--it was about money. Thats all it is. Lucas doesn't actually care about OOT fans. If anything, you should honestly thank Jim Ward for this because it was he who spearheaded this release and "had been begging Lucas for years" to release it--but Lucas inevitably trumped him and forced him to release a 1993 laserdisk transfer.

So, this is how the DVDs are going to look...

"The film artefacts I'm talking about are numerous pieces of dirt, scratches etc."

It's funny. When I showed my first transfer to Laserman, he commented on how visible the video drop-outs were on my video, and attributed it to my LD player. When we looked at the same transfer from the X0, these were even worse, which meant the drop-outs and such were on the LD transfer, itself . Better players tend to bring out these errors, which means such errors will be even more pronounced on the DVDs.

Of course, had LFL bothered to do even a minimal level of correction, these wouldn't be a problem. In some of our X0 experiments, we've been able to minimize such errors quite easily with freeware. Lucas can say what he wants about using the latest technology, but he's about to be surpassed...and in a big way.

"Why would it appear this way on a DVD, though? Did they actually run it through a projector to put it on DVD?!? LOL"

Pretty much, yeah. Keep in mind, this transfer was made 10 YEARS AGO . It used to be state of the art, which is why it's being put to shame right out of the gate.

The Blob!
Time
"But that blob's not present on every frame of those scenes, is it? Are those the first frames of those two shots? If so, maybe it's something to do with the way they film was originally spliced (there were all kinds of jumps and scrapes and rubbish on first or last frames that I cleaned out of my LD transfer, which weren't there when I got the 2004 DVDs to use as source)."

http://img95.imageshack.us/img95/7084/esbblobrp2.jpg

"I think I'll go with splicing glue."

That's precisely what it is, and it only occurs between certain scene changes (some are worse than others.) Believe me, I know. What do you think I've been removing from individual frames for the X0 Project?

They are mainly yellow in ANH, but I've not gone through ESB at such detail. Apparently, they used a better (read: clearer) glue for some shots, but the above shot looks like it would in ANH.

Is Dune a good movie?
Time
"I hope someday we get a Dune feature film trilogy from a great director, but even then, it would be hard to top the visual style established by Lynch."

"The SciFi miniseries is a great adaptation, but all of the sets look like sets and the acting can be downright painful."

Absolutely agreed. I love putting in Dune just to look at it, and the acting of the miniseries just doesn't even come close. It's not horrible, but the move just has more pure, raw emotion. There's spit coming out of many mouths in the film version.

For me, Dune has an endless watchability factor to it.
