The X-Files - Worth Watching?
Time
Second to that: War of the Coprophages (1/5/96)

From the same twisted mind that wrote "Jose Chung's From Outer Space" (Darin Morgan, whose first gig on the X-Files was dressing up as Flukeman in "The Host"), this hilarious spoof of B-movies is over-the-top. A town suffers from mass hysteria when it is believed that killer cockroaches have invaded. Leave it to Mulder and a comely entomologist named Bambi ("Her name is Bambi?" an incredulous Scully asks Mulder over the phone) to try and save the day. Fortunately, Scully does show up in time to help Mulder, because "this is no place for an entomologist". And I bet on that night in January, a lot of people got off their chairs to see what it was that had run across their television screens halfway through the episode.

First Impressions of the OOT ...
Time
Ran across this. Anyone else ever hear of this?

Well, have begun the process of exploring the "bonus" discs of my new
SW DVD's...

Overall, they DO look and sound better than I expected, though of
course...not as good as they could or should...(I guess that's why low
expectations make a difference.. .)

Anyway!

Although knowing these were from the 1993 laserdisc masters meant I
was pretty sure I wouldn't see it...the 2.35:1 notice on the back of
JEDI made me hope...

As dilineated in the classic VIDEO WATCHDOG article, Lucasfilm, when
making these transfers, were apparently SO exasperated in the
pre-digital age by the appearance of ONE LOUSY HAIR at the VERY
beginning, in the top center of the screen, which can be seen for a
few frames superimposed onto part of the Star Destroyer... that they
RE-COMPED the entire film, lopping off a dozen or so scan lines and
cropping it down to about a 2.20:1 image.

Of course that same article mentions it could have been done
independently by the telecine operator...but still....every version of
JEDI since then, including the one used as the basis for the 1997
special editions, has also been re-comped... .

Amusing, and ultimately irrelevant, but still...kinda sucks.

2006 OT DVD: The Crawl on Star Wars
Time
With all due respect to THX, the reason I'd rather see video being compared, rather than screencaps, is because I want to see if the "wiggle" is the same. Not trying to be impossible, but having created my own crawl from the EoD documentary, I noticed a stark difference between the smoothness of mine to the wobble of the original (which, again, was preferable to me - I just haven't gotten around to adding "wiggle" to mine.)

When you've looked at these things frame-by-frame at high magnification, these are the little things that tend to stick out.

I wonder if Netflix has these yet.....

"(prepares to eat own hat) "

LOL....don't worry about it. Lord knows I never thought these DVDs would come out, though the fact that they are 4x3 doesn't surprise me.

As to Lucas' statements, keep in mind that, at one point, he said the SW films would never be released on home video, yet I can't think of another film that has been re-released anywhere near as many times (Though Evil Dead/Army of Darkness comes to mind. )

"is if LFL is shocked enough by the backlash from the third-rate OUT transfers"

I think dismal sales will outrank that concern.

"If a bootleg set can be better than his official release, it would embarass LFL even further and put a lot more pressure on him to give the films a proper release."

As such, it may have been just as well that we didn't beat these versions, since we can try to up the ante for the 30th anniversary.

"PS: f-off's are aimed at the SE not at any person, member and/or poster. "

Careful, boris. One might think you are bashing, and that just wouldn't be you. (j/k - welcome to the club )

I will say this is one shot where I appreciate the enhanced brightness and color.

All the other '04 changes are too sharp and videogame-ish. Especially....

Just saw TV ad for DVDs for the first time....

" Yeah, but it gives off the impression that Chewie's a pet, rather than a technologically advanced 200 year old co-pilot who happens to be covered in fur and speaks with what we hear as growls."

But that doesn't preclude him from being a technologically advanced 200 year old co-pilot who happens to be covered in fur and speaks with what we hear as growls and appreciates a good scratch now and then.

It could be a sign of affection in his race.
