Okay, I finally did it! I have an EXCELLENT 24fps MPEG of ANH. It's funny, my ealier 19.19 MPEG came out at 3.32 GB with bitrates of 6/3. My new MPEG came out at 2.67 GB with bitrates of 7/3! I'm definitely rerunning it with higher rates, and I will still have room for the PCM soundtrack (and maybe the 5.1 as well... )

Okay, I'm playing with the filter thingy in VirtualDub mod (I hope I don't go blind ), and I was wondering....if I was going to de-interlace, should I do it before or after ITVC? (And if so, what's the best filter to use? And yes, I have read in many places that de-interlacing can cause more problems than it solves. I was just curious.)

Also, how does DECOMB play into this? (Though it appears this is only a Avisynth filter.)

Also, should I convert to 24fps before applying other filters (denoise, dotcrawl, etc?)

"Have you done a compare of the footage through your card vs through your camcorder just out of interest?"

Not really. I can already see the differences just in the codec alone.

"If you like I will send you a bootleg DVD for nuffin so you can compare your results to what is already out there."

Well, I still want to send you mine, so you can hear the 5.1 and see how I incorporated the commentaries. I've just been holding off until I made a better version. We'll trade.

"It does look a little light compared to the LD"

Like I said, MPEG makes it darker, and I like the background details. Once I've finished this full compile (12 out of 24 hours so far), we'll see what improvements can be made at the next step.

BTW, just a little thing here. I found out that "null transform" will let me crop my AVI's, so I wanted to make two different sets. One set would be cropped 24fps, which turned out fine. The second set was supposed to be a cropped copy of the originals (still at 30 fps), but with the extra "false start" minutes edited out.

Using VirtualDubMod, on the "Frame Rate" tab, I clicked "No Change", but there's no apparent way to keep from taking off the "Progressive" tab. Now, the resulting 30 fps files, cropped and with several minutes of extra footage cut out, are 1/10 bigger , and are labelled "Progressive Order" in Vegas, rather than "Lower Field First" like my masters. What gives?

BTW, my 24fps cropped versions look perfect, but Vegas says they are 19 fps and progressive. Is this right?

"The stars are still there, the small preview doesn't show it. Ah, well; it's your project, do what you will."

Oh, don't get me wrong. I'm just saying that, if that is a shot from your AVI, it's too dark, and most of the stars will get swallowed up in the MPEG. As I've said, I've had to balance between bright stars and a washed out Star Destroyer on the opening sequence. As we speak, I am compiling an MPEG at a bitrate of 8/6 (high/avg.), just to see what kind of file size I get.

"If I ever get a big enough harddrive I might start my own."

Fry's is selling a 250 for $119. I'm running 3 160's and a 250 (all Maxtor), and most of them are full!

"By the way, what video capture card are you using?"

I bought a WinTVGO model 190 for $40 bucks, and as you can see, it is kicking ass (with third-party software). The results are far superior to what I thought I would get using my $700 digicam with analog pass-through. Go figure.

"Now I don't know about you, but that's a hell of a lot better and there's little to no loss of detail."

All you've really done is adjust the contrast, and lost the stars in the background in the process. It's a balancing act, but I like where I've got it at this point.

"What about Howard the Duck?"

I would so do that movie. Leia Thompson is HOT!!!!

I'd also like to do THX-1138, another great film that Lucas has gone after with his digital crayons.

Okay, I've created a 24fps segment, and here's the results...

http://home.netcom.com/~eandtc/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/24fps0.jpg

I can see where scenes have been joined, but the playback is not nearly as smooth, and I'm concerned about the "junk" located in some of the scenes (i.e. outlines or shadows from the joined images.) Is this as good as it gets? Should I watch it on a home DVD player to see how it looks there?

[Tarkin] This bickering is pointless! [/Tarkin]

Let him believe what he wants. It's not like anyone is really affected by this technology anyways (except for ZombieFlanders, apparently. )

So, can anyone tell me what is a good procedure for doing 2-3 pulldown frame by frame? Is there a program that can help find the correct sequence? I've tried loading my AVI into TMPGenc (I guess it works without the serial number) so that I can mess with the IVTC settings, but it keeps closing on me. I'd hate to have to do another capture for it.

BTW, does TPMGenc allow for cutting/pasting of the AVI (to remove side changes/swaps)? I've got Vegas chewing on the AVI to create an MPEG with 2-pass VBR with a max bitrate of 6,000 and an avergage of 4,000, just to see what size file I get. I'm at 20% completely after 16 hours. I've tried some short sequences with the IVTC settings in Vegas, but only when making the actual MPEG (I can read the Alpary AVI in Vegas, but I can't re-save it as such.) I get jerky scenes, and the combined frames aren't always correct.

I guess what I'm asking is, if I was anal enough about it, is it possible/worth it to convert to 24 FPS frame by frame? (Yes, all 200,000 of them )

DUAL LAYER SET's will hit soon - but be skeptical!

"Wasn't there just a whole thread arguing about the LD source being only in 2.0, so any 5.1 mix would be an extrapolation of that, making the whol enterprise kinda pointless? Doesn't a 5.1 mix of of a 2.0 source just eat up extra space on the disc?"

"now, shouldnt the 2.0 source function as dolby pro logic surround, but not dolby digital? thats still a pretty decent surround sound mix"

To answer both questions...PCM isn't really "2.0". The SW soundtrack is a matrixed stereo soundtrack. If you listen to commercial DVD's that have a DD2.0 and a PCM soundtrack (i.e Young Guns), the PCM soundtrack will sound much better when Pro-logic decoded, at least in my experience. Most DVD magazine reviews I've read about DD2.0 soundtracks describe them as sounding like "big fat mono".

I found a program that simulates a Pro-logic II decoder, and ran the LD PCM soundtrack through it. This created a 6-channel .WAV (also uncompressed, like the original PCM track.) After this, I split the 6-chan wav into 6 separate channels, creating the soundtrack that would normally be heard from a Pro-logic II receiver.

I then took these 6 separate channels (actually 5, since the low frequency effects, or ".1" sountrack, remained within the first 5 soundtracks) and created a 5.1 DD soundtrack. Now I have a 5.1 soundtrack similar to the PCM track when PLII decoded, but it takes up a fraction of the space taken up by a PCM stereo track. The more space I can devote to the video, the better.
