Info Wanted: an Original Trilogy preservation project with French audio?
Time

The translation is a bit loose in the first film, but gets more faithfull in the next two.
And here it's a classic: "Met la gomme Chico !"*
It's even sampled by the french rap scene**...

Haha! I forgot that one!

I was kidding when I said "La honte". Personally I'm a purist who needs to watch films in V.O. but other people have different tates...DUH!

You're right though, the first film is really loose. Not only that, but "Dark Vader" sounds like he's speaking through a cardboard tube!

The short answer is: no one really knows. Seeing as the audio is probably the easiest part of the restoration, the sound on the final product is on the backburner until the video is ready to be transfered to DVD. From what they've been saying, the final product will have the original PCM audio from the laserdiscs (the best possible audio source available - and it's pretty good! I have Cowclops' original version of his transfer which features the PCM audio and about everyone agrees that the sound is the best feature on that version).

The laserdiscs were encoded in Dolby Digital PCM 2.0 (which can become 4 channel surround if you have a compatible reciever).

There.

Anyone see American Dad last night?

Sorry if this doesn't belong in this part of the forum. It seemed appropriate.

I cracked up when that Dan Veeber guy told the Sci-fi crowd that the father character was the reason Lucas was holding back the un-special edition original Star wars trilogy.

I was the only one of my friends laughing at that joke and thus became an instant nerd. Ha! Oh well...

(oh and the fat kid lightsaber fighting...hardy har har).

In my experience, 8mm has roughly the same resolution as NTSC/PAL (roughly because film has no "fixed" resolution - it's just a coating of silver halides whose size tends to increase with the ASA speed). 16mm is roughly HD and 35 is 4k.

But even if you do transfer the 8mm or 16mm prints, me thinks they'd be in terrible shape, not to mention the fact that they'd more than likely be pan and scan...YUCK. Although I have come across a few nice 16mm anamorphic prints. I remember finding "They Live!" once. Ooo! Those reds never looked nicer!

(- I've walked a white line my entire life, I'm not about to screw that up.
-White line's in the middle of the road, that's the worst place to drive.)

The Cowclops Transfers (a.k.a. the PCM audio DVD's, Row47 set) Info and Feedback Thread (Released)
Time
I just finished watching a tiny bit of the new version and my opinion:

Eh.

Once you calibrate your television, you notice that the colors are better than the first version. It's in anamorphic so anyone with a 16x9 television will rejoice. The commentary track is nice and the menus are excellent as well.

But when when you come down to it, there really isn't anything revolutionary about this transfer. It's not any sharper or cleaner than the first version, so don't expect a miracle.

If you want an anamorphic transfer of the TR-47 bootleg, this is the one to get. Otherwise, for those with 4x3 televisions, I recommend sticking with the first versions.

Just my two cents.

Not to diss the makers: there will definitely be people who will enjoy this version a lot better than me. But seeing as I only own a 4x3 television, I'm perfectly satisfied with the first one.

My computer must have been slow at the time. It seems to be pretty smooth now.

Glad to hear you got the sound issue worked out! no need to repost, I agree.

This will turn out to be a really good transfer if you keep it up. The only really issue I have with the PAL LDs is that their framing is a little tighter than the NTSC. I don't know why someone decided to cut off that much picture...

Wow, that's a good job! A nice sharp image compared to the NTSC versions floating around. Just a few things:

The framerate is choppy. I'm guessing you used the video from the MPEG-2 files from Moth3r's DVD? Perhaps that has something to do with it...too many steps.

(and the sound sucks BAD...but you knew that)

Good project to take on though! Keep up the good work!
