Star Wars coming to Blu Ray (UPDATE: August 30 2011, No! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!)
Time

Film does not have a set resolution. It is a piece of transparent plastic coated in a layer ( or layers) of light sensitive, silver hallide crystals. The more sensitive the film, the bigger the crystals, and hence the more grain that is apparent.

The fact that no one crystal is in one given spot at any one frame of the film at any given time is what gives film it's "organic" look. With digital, every pixel is side by side, and this gives digital video an image with sharp edges.

I'm not sure what point you are trying to make danny boy, but the only thing that the old 82 laserdisc was faithful to was a damaged IP print that had gone sour after years of making theatrical release prints.

Yes there will be grain on the original negative, but nothing like that horrid ip print. Just look back at the 97SE.

This was a nice comparison I read on Google+:
The changes that Lucas has made over the years is the equivalent of someone keying your car. On an intellectual level, you know that the car still works, and its only marred a fraction of a percent of the paintjob. On an emotional level, every time you see it, it's all you can focus on, and it makes you want to rip someone's face off.

I am stealing this!

Harmy's THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK Despecialized Edition HD - V2.0 - MKV & AVCHD (Released)

Well, the are a few more things I'd like to Despecialize - some of the Hoth battle shots and Falcon coming to cloud city and some of these shots had really bad DVNR smearing on them in the GOUT, so Puggo's version should be much better for those.

Also, I recently learned that there is many more of those zoomed in cockpit shots, so I might try and do those too.

You used the GOUT for shots of the Hoth battle? I didn't know that there were any changes to it apart from the recomped effects...

Speaking of Target, a few months ago, I picked up an edition of ANH that had the cover of the '04 DVD and not the '06 set. Were they ever selling the DVDs of the '04 individually or is it just a wrongly packaged '06 disc? I haven't opened it yet.

The cover looked like this:

<img src="http://www.markheadrick.com/dvd/images/StarWarsIV-ANewHope.jpg" width="385" height="537" />

Wow, I'd forgotten how horrendous that cover art was.

2. Actually I do plan to redo Empire (probably not using the Blu-Ray though) when I can get my hands on a cleaned up version of Puggo Strickes Back. But that probably won't be done in the near future. It may be months before ESB DeEd v2.0 is done.

Just curious which shots you thought needed redone that would necessitate using the puggo transfer? I've watched your version and thought it looked great already.

What was the &quot;fatal flaw&quot; of the Prequels if you think they sucked? (aka. Let's take a break from hating on the blu-rays)
Time

Despite the weird, annoying, pointless serial murderer subplot, Red Letter Media pretty much hit the hammer on the nail with his reviews. Couldn't say it any better than he does.

Does anyone remember the clonewars cartoon? Not the new cgi one but the hand drawn one that came out before revenge of the sith? THAT is how the PT should have been. It actually showed a likeable anakin, a believable relationship between him and padme, and a story that was engaging and exciting.

It was basically an obvious tie-in, but that says something when the tie in is more emotionally believable than the actual product.

I'm already pre-emptively hiding from this, but are any of these changes really THAT bad? As far as the Nooo! goes, it kind of ties the prequels in nicely to the OT, the Krayt dragon call is incredibly minor, and Adywan made the cantina aliens blink, so why can't the Ewoks? Is any of this as awful as Greedo shooting first? Jabba's Palace dance number? For the first time, I feel like I actually get why he is making these changes. And the CGI TPM Yoda is a huge improvement. That puppet looked like Kermit and Miss Piggy's ugly middle child.

Don't get me wrong, I would generally rather watch the Original Versions. but I find the special editions sort of cool in that Lucas is changing all six movies to gradually make them work together as a cohesive whole. If you look at them that way, they've almost become an interesting fanedit of themselves.

I'm going to go hide behind my ray shield now...

I think that a lot of people on this board feel that Lucas can do whatever he wants...as long as he just manages to give us the original theatrical as well. It's not that difficult to understand. So if Lucas wants to create this unifying 6 film saga, so be it (I personally would never pay for it). But the biggest outcry for the past 13 or so years could be put to rest if he would just give us the OUT with an decent, updated transfer.

Lurking around, I have noticed all the different versions of fan edits and I have to say I am mostly relieved that there are better ways to see the unmolested OT than the GOUT. My question is, which version would be considered superior and what is the best way to go about getting them?

TR47 sets ftw!

(I kid, I kid: but the nostalgia of 2004 still resides strongly in my brain...)

You know the funniest thing is, people have been whining at George Lucas for over 14 years now. Does he realize that we're all simply asking for the simplest of things...

A high-def transfer of best existing film sources of the original trilogy - he doesn't even need to touch a thing! Just leave it as it is, dust, film grain, matte-lines and all. Throw in the mono mix and 70mm mix for ANH and put it on a bluray. Voila. And we'll never bitch again.

Am I right? Or am I right? Right.

I'm getting great ideas for a little montage... Take classic endings, and then put in the "Noooo noooooooo!!!!"

Casablanca: Humphrey Bogart sees Ingrid Bergman fly away... He then belts out "Noooo, NOOOOOO!!!"

Godfather Part 2: Michael Corleone is sitting alone, reminiscing about happier times. Final shot: the camera dollies towards his face..."Noooo! NOOOOOOOO!"

ET: Elliott watches his alien friend fly away... "Nooo! NOOOOOOOO!"

(man I'm just getting started!)

Puggo GRANDE - 16mm restoration (Released)
Time

SilverWook said:

It's still film, so there ought to be more information there than an analog video master has?

It depends. Sure if it were a pristine 16 mm print, that'd be one thing. But having been a projectionist for a number of years, 16mm prints are the bottom of the barrel in terms of quality control. As we see with the puggo grande, the image is cropped at the bottom, the second reel is pink (imo, this is probably a hastily made replacement reel. This happens often if reels are missing or damaged when returned to the distributor after projection), and it's littered with dust and scratches.

Just because it's film doesn't make it a holy grail of quality. So people have to remember that the puggo 16mm projects are an interesting, and I find, highly enjoyable project. But if you're looking for a pristine copy of the OT... Get harmy's despecialized or Dj's gout project.

'04 DVDs: final verdict
Time

Well they took the 1997 Special Editions to Lowry Digital who scanned the negatives and remastered them, and in doing so, wiped the grain out of the picture. Then the colorist over saturated the look of the film (possibly to make it look more in line with a more modern looking film like the prequels rather than the 25-30 year old films they actually are). Then they added more special effects, sound effects, a bit of subtle re-editing and voila!

I'm probably biased seeing as I used to run a film club back in college and this brought me back to the days of dealing with those faded, scratched, poor sounding prints, but not caring and getting lost in these great stories.

I ran Puggo's SW at least 10 different times for the club I ran in college. Blew people away every time. And this was after I had configured the screening room with all the integrated amplifiers....made mono sound incredible.

Now that's awesome! Where did you go to school?

Puggo GRANDE - 16mm restoration (Released)
Time

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but I just wanted to give a shout out to Puggo for this awesome edition of Star Wars! I've been on this site for a while and whilst we've dreamed of having pristine copies of the OT for the longest time (and that's becoming more of a reality with Harmy's and Dark Jedi's projects), having a telecine of this beat up, worn out, scratched, pink faded 16mm print seems just more...theatrically authentic.

I'm probably biased seeing as I used to run a film club back in college and this brought me back to the days of dealing with those faded, scratched, poor sounding prints, but not caring and getting lost in these great stories.

Thank you!

70mm versus 35mm Film

And on Ben-Hur they added an anamorphic lens to the 70mm camera which then squeezed the ratio to an awesomely wide 2.76:1.

Just to clarify, 70mm films are shot in a 65mm format but the extra 5 millimeters are for the magnetic soundtrack.

Just to note, Ben Hur was shot in the 2.76:1 ultra panavision format, but was shown in theatres in 2.5:1 (this also hid soft imperfections on the edges of anamorphic processes. )

I'm sure someone, if not the X0 team, will take the video and make an anamorphic version.

But I have a quick question: with all the microscopic restoration work done on ANH, how much work will need to be done to clean up ESB and ROTJ? You mentioned that they're not as bad, obviously, but will it need the same kind of detail work that the current project is taking? Just how clean are those later films?
