**RUMOR** Original theatrical cut of the OT to be released on blu ray!!
Time

I'm definitely gasping at straws and covering myself in tin foil, but I read this just now:

"Robert (A. Harris), as it happens, is in town working on another fine classic film restoration project which will be announced in due course."

This is the same Robert A Harris who said he'd restore the OUT for free.

Right, now back to researching Chemtrails!*

Harmy's THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK Despecialized Edition HD - V2.0 - MKV & AVCHD (Released)
Time

It was just the way the special effect was done at the time. Because the scene takes place against a white background, the matte lines (the black lines around objects in old effects shots) would have been more visible. They got around it by making the layers more opaque.

The entire scene was digitally recomposited in 1997 for the special edition, so no black lines, no opacity. This was used for Harmy's 1.0.

But because Harmy is trying to make the despecialization as original as possible, he added the opacity back in with 2.0.

Hope that makes sense!

4K restoration on Star Wars
Time

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Lucasfilm restore the entire original film before doing the special edition CGI inserts? So they might have scanned the bits and pieces of the recomposited original effects stored somewhere, splice them into a video timeline and use that for an oot release?

Not ideal, but it's better than nothing.

On another note, can't wait for the Ep 2-3 4k 16 bit scans! Oh wait...

Star Wars on Super8 (Released)

I like the idea of making the uncompressed frames available. But I also like Poita's idea of perhaps cranking out a quick and dirty one-light color corrected, 720p MKV or whatever. It would be great for those who are just curious about how the thing looks. See if there are extra frames, what title sequence it has at the end, if it has the yellow tears at the beginning...

Keep in mind that Mike's very open about his identity,

Exactly. If what he does is illegal, and could get him in trouble, why isn't he keeping low profile? He probably assures a lot of people 3 times a day, that he's never going to release it, okay. But his behavior is mind-boggling to me. Team negative1's stuff will probably still need a couple of years, maybe it won't even be ready in 2076. But they post a lot of samples, you can see the progress. And you know, that this whole thing won't be kept in the vault for undefined amount of time. All the people saying "you're cool, Team Negative1" do it, because they can picture how finished project is going to look, and how much work is put to it. Meanwhile, we (majority of OT.com) know very little about what Mr. Verta is really doing. His sources are better than everyone else's. And that would be it. He didn't even do anything to prove it. Maybe he showed something to more important people from here, but not to me. And it's me, who's supposed to register on his forum and follow the project for the next 20 years.

Letting everyone know that Star Wars is in good hands is one thing. Coming by once in a couple of years to say "Hi, go check my forums!" is another.

He's on track to getting this completed on schedule, and it won't be 2076. You're off by 50 years or so.

In any case my 2c on the matter is that there's nothing for you to whine about. No one is forcing you to go to his website. No one is forcing you to come to this thread. He has been very forthcoming and honest from the beginning about his intentions and has been very open about his work despite the private nature of the final project.

This is probably THE definitive restoration done on this film which could be used for a future bluray/DCP. Keep that in mind.

team negative1 - star wars 1977 - 35mm theatrical version (Released)

To me it's most definitely the flag that the man is holding in his hand on the right. He was probabaly instructed to hold the flag at a certain position until the camera panned up and over and he was to move accordingly. Only he was just a bit too slow at the beginning. Why do this? Look at the shadows... The sun is positioned in front of the camera. That's a recipe for some nasty lens flair (not always the pretty kind). When you're doing a semi-complicated camera move and trying to avoid artifacts going onto your image you need someone to block it out. It's not unheard of to have someone simply hold their hand over a lens to block out a light. Do what you need to do to get the shot.

A lens hood in a shot doesn't look like that. Il looks like a blurry, black vignette.

Upscaling Robocop Criterion (Released)
Time

It looks like the footage sourced for those excised scenes were not from the original negative. In the older transfers, it looks as though they lowered the gamma in those shots to hide the low-quality. In the newer transfer they raised the levels to better integrate with the surrounding footage, but with the unfortunate side-effect of seeing all of the warts.
