HALLOWEEN - Fixing the audio and re-creating 1999 color timing (Released)
Time

The old BD audio should be fine as long as it isn't compressed poopy 192k DD. I would assume it is some form of uncompressed?

By the way, at ten million dollars, STAR WARS was not an ultra low budget film and Lucas had proper control of how the prints looked.

Carpenter and Cundy had no such freedom on the 350k budgeted Halloween, which is why they both have stated the 99 transfer was what they would have done had they been given the time and money to properly color time the film.

Heck, I understand. My first short film was shot on 16mm and I could only afford two passes at color timing and that was that. Despite it not being what I wanted we were out of money and pretty much said 'it is what it is.' When I was finally able to scan the negative for an HD transfer I had it tweaked to the max, making it look like I had always intended. It wade a huge difference.

I have a problem with this.  This isn't preservation or fixing, but tinkering to suit preference.  Sure, no problem in doing it for fun, but I wouldn't call it fixing a problem.

I have yet to see the new transfer, but knowing Cudney signed off on it gives me a little bit of satisfaction and comfort.

As for the audio, and the reports I've heard?  Fuck that.  Gimme the original mono track please. :)

First, unfortunately I mis-typed (typing too quickly) and forgot the 'not' in "I'm not saying this version is right." My bad.

What's certain is that every single transfer looks different. None of them are alike. It's crazy. But there are documentaries showing Carpenter and Cundy talking about how they supervised the 99 THX DVD and how for the first time they had the means to color it the way they wanted. Blah blah blah. So for me, that's good enough and no doubt it feels more right.

No doubt directors are now falling in love with colors that were not used all that much prior to DI's. Orange and teal are all the rage and guys like Cameron are changing the blue tints in their films to teal tints. I hate it.

The 99 THX color timing is not how it looked in theaters. Cundy had stated they could not possibly afford to photo-chemically time it the way they wanted. It was a very very low budget film. So the 99 DVD was a "what-if" release.

And frankly, I think it works far better that way. I was so distracted by the first BD being overly summery green I couldn't enjoy it.

For me, the older color timing is king and I wonder if it is possible to alter the current BD to match. I am thinking it would take some serious work. Far beyond what I am capable of. :(

Well once again a Blu-Ray for HALLOWEEN has been released that is causing controversy. First of all, it is indisputable that the mono mix is just a downmix of the remix. It is NOT the original audio.

Just as bad is the color timing, which, while better than the prior BluRay, is nothing like the 1999 THX DVD that had color timing giving the film a Fall appearance. The two BD’s do not look like fall at all and Dean Cundy and John Carpenter both supervised and approved the 1999 telecine.

I’m not saying that version is right. I am saying it feels more true to a story set on Halloween.

So I am thinking that this may be film I have to ‘rescue’ but color timing is difficult. VERY difficult when dealing with 4:2:0 H.264 video. I’m curious is anyone else feels as annoyed as I do…?

I have long intended to clean up the splice sounds and pops from the mono track but just cannot get the time. I am so swamped trying to get my first feature film off the ground. Sorry to all.

CSchmidlapp's work in progress on THE KILLER is superior to anything out there. I watched it on a 72 inch screen and no doubt it looks better than the Dragon Dynasty Blu-Ray (which is a smeary mess). I'm sure the final version will be even better.

Many thanks. It was hard hard work. The audio took forever! But I wanted to get it right.

I used Soundbooth to clean up some troubled spots and simply used the time in Adobe Premiere Pro to sync. I would have to make cuts in the sound and then slide it back and firth a frame or two or three all throughout. It took hundreds of cuts and lots of patience! :)

POLICE STORY will not be nearly as bad, but I just don't have the time for it right now.

Help: looking for... A BETTER TOMORROW and FIST OF LEGEND laserdiscs - Anyone have them? I need the soundtracks for restorations. Also GOD OF GAMBLERS and DRUNKEN MASTER 2.

The extended Police Story translation I found is quite lazy. And the way the timings are on the srt file, about a 3rd of the subs do not flash.

Now for the laziness... Look below. Both of these need to be split up into two separate subtitles. This happens all the time so it's just too many words mashed together to read. I could list countless examples, but whatever. It's definitely at its worst during the opening section that is specific to the Japanese cut

49

00:04:11,970 --> 00:04:16,190

Nancy, I don't know you.

How do you know it's my birthday?

50

00:04:16,210 --> 00:04:19,470

Not only do I know it's your birthday,

but also that the lights above you are flashing.

I think I have answered this many many times so I will say it again and try to be very clear.  :)

The one on Piratebey is my FINAL VERSION. It has the contrast and brightness fixes, the original restored audio properly synced and the new subtitles.

There is a version on a private torrent site that is the Japanese RAW. The site mods refused to allow me to share my version. Flat out refused and no matter how many people begged them to allow it, they just said no. Hence my posting it publicly on piratebey. It downloads non-stop. Never quits. Lord knows how many times it has been downloaded and shared, which makes me happy.

I wish I could report progress, but it's been a difficult road for me. I have SO MUCH going on with work that I'm friend each night.

What would be helpful is a new, working, non-lazy translation of the extended Police Story. If I get that I will take the time to finish up my POLICE STORY Extended restoration.

Drunken Master 2 would be next, but it's going to require some serious hard drive space as I have to convert all the various HD versions to lossless before editing. Ugh.

OK, why start a fight? You made an assumption that was incorrect. I corrected you. I wasn't being a dick or anything.

I myself wasn't getting coasters. I was always unwilling to risk it and had my pal burn my 50's. He happens to be as technically smart as anyone I know so it wasn't his fault. His burner simply wasn't performing properly. He did some research and begrudgingly bought another burner (that was actually cheaper than the one he was using) and his coaster issue went away. Likely it was just bad luck and his first burner wasn't quite right (but only with duel layer BluRay).

There's no need for a peepee contest. We are all friends here and as such should strive to help each other out. I know I always go the extra mile and clearly from the looks of Conan you do too, so have a beer and by Crom, enjoy what is best in life.

jedi, it's because everyone I know gets far more coasters when burning duels vs single layer. Hence the nervousness and intimidation. And heck, some burners just ain't so good at it. A good friend of mine was getting a 35%+ coaster ratio so he replaced his burner and presto, now it's around ten %.

Then get a good burner and buy good blanks, I have yet(knocks on wood) burn a bad BD50, no coasters at all(knocks on wood again) pioneer burner and Verbatim blanks all the way.

Careful, my friend... You are responding without knowing the facts. He had a good burner and only used the best blanks. Yet he still ended up with lots of coasters. He got frustrated and bought a new burner and now its ok. His old burner is still in use for single layer discs (and always works perfectly).

Shit happens. I know plenty of people who get coasters here and there. As for me, ImgBurn is verifying my CONAN burn as I type this. Amazing how fast I was able to download it, by the way. I'll be able to pop it in my PS3 by ten PM if all goes well.

I am downloading right now at a rate of about 2 to 3 mbps so hopefully it will finish by late tonight. I'll keep it seeded for the entire weekend and into next week. Not 24/7 (my home office is struggling with this heat wave so I need to shut down at night) but definitely all day long.

I've never actually burned a BD50 on my own BD burner. Normally I collaborate with a friend and he burns the duel layer stuff for me. But he has zero interest in Conan so I guess it's time I see if I can burn one myself. :)
