German ANH DVD OOT audio track: Entire part of dialogue missing in Chapter 13

Yeah, I personally don't like foreign language dubs myself. Makes me feel like I'm missing something.

Well, it is probably difficult to explain as you never grew up with dubbed movies. Here in germany the whole dubbing ordeal not only represents a huge regional industry - it has also become a kind of traditional thing. To be honest I am not sure how to convey to you what the german versions of these films mean to me - it is how I first saw them as a kid and even though I have also fallen in love with the original english dub, I still want to have the german version available as well. It's not merely a matter of what I got used to as a child - In my opinion, dubbing StarWars and getting it "right" is extremely difficult and it was so beautifully done back in the days of the original trilogy.

The special editions disrupted the magical balance of the original dubs, as the new lines for Darth Vader were not spoken by the same actor (who was still alive at that time), with the 2004 editions representing the most horrible experience with "the emperor's phone call" from ESB.

If you guys are interested I will open a seperate Thread with a few audio examples of the german voices, so you can decide for yourself (eventhough I am aware that it's difficult to judge the translations without knowing german - but at least you can judge the mood/acting and the sound of the voices).

Help Wanted: Despaired fan of the german OOT seeks help on where to find information on how to create a fan edit
Time

As you can see in this thread - fans of the german version of the OOT version of ANH, are screwed quite a bit.

First of all I beg your pardon for not making a thorough search for a “beginners information thread” - I just didn’t have the nerve, as I’ve just found this flaw and had a bit of a hard landing from the simple-OOT-enjoyment-land back into LFL-inferior-quality-ripoff-land.

I already looked in the sticky thread for newcomers, but the links there are broken at the moment. If someone patient enough could give me a little nudge in the right direction and recommend me a few sites to start with when it comes down to gathering knowledge on how to modify a movie without loosing too much quality through recompression and the like and what kind of software and equipment are required - I’d be very happy.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Well, it seems like I have to eat my own words regarding to being able to "just watch the movie". I just noticed while trying to just do that, that in chapter 13 of ANH when Luke, Han & Chewie wait for the elevator to the detention area, the announcements in the background are missing - as well as the lines "Ich kann in diesem Helm überhaupt nichts sehen (I can't see a thing in this helmet)", "Das wird nicht funktionieren (This is not gonna work)", "Warum hast du das nicht gleich gesagt? (Why didn't you say so before?)" and "Ich habe es gesagt (I did say so before)".

Now I'll have to create my own fan edit that at least keeps these lines from the german audio dub intact - and I thought buying this release would spare me that work.

Well, I don't really care about these minor things - especially when they don't impact the performance when "just watching the film". Of course it's all part of the Lucasfilm money grabbing machine not to put any "unnecessary" effort into the release of the OUT (or GOUT if you please). It's a philosophy George Lucas adopted somewhere down the road of making his films.

When I went into the store and bought these babies, I knew these would be like a "Laserdisc copied to a DVD" - I knew what I would get.

The 2004 editions on the other hand - represent an inferior product that was rushed out the door (heck even the original film material that was still in the process of being cleaned up was taken away from lowry before he could even finish the job). If you want to be mad at something about this release, then please be mad about the fact that you're forced to buy a product along the way that was created with todays technology and still looks like a heap of crap by todays quality standards (color balancing, mouse pointers moving through the picture, incomplete foley track in ANH, messed up musical score, lollipop uni-colored lightsabers, etc.).

Sadly, it really seems some people have lost the ability to just sit down and "just watch the film". Just try to be glad that none of the people who commited the crime of "improving the presentation quality" of the 2004 editions, tried to do the same with the OUT. I for one am glad they didn't meddle with it at all.

Actually the only thing that really sticks out like a sore thumb on these new photoshop assemblies of the classic posters, ist that dumb prequel version of the Vader costume on them. If they actually had used the original Vader from the movies these cover arts were designed for, they wouldn't be bad at all (especially when compared to the horrid ones from the 2004 release).

More changes ?
Time
I am pretty sure that we will see changes to all six movies. Since George Lucas now has time to step back to get the whole picture and adjust it were he sees fit. At one point in time though, he will have to nail it down and say "Ok, this is how I want the saga to be remembered."

In my opinion, he should publish a "StarWars construction kit" containing all source material for all the starwars films in a ready to be implemented state - so everyone can tinker around with it like he does - at least we'd all get a chance to have our way and build our favourite version of the films.

Why all the negative coments about george lucas?
Time
I don't have a problem with criticism towards George Lucas - I don't hate him, but I certainly don't feel the urge to lick his boots. The reason there's an OOT release on DVD is that influential people at LFL seem to have started an ongoing argument about the commercial potential of releasing it (along with specific merchandise like "han shot first" t-shirts) and Mr. Lucas merely agreed in hope that it is commercially unsuccessful to quiet his critics within LFL by proving them wrong. To quote my favourite prequel character: "Greed, can be a powerful ally."

If he would have done this, because he finally realized his cultural responsibility as an artist, he would have reearned my respect.

Lucas: Big pics are doomed
Time
BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. — Leave it to "Star Wars" creator George Lucas to pronounce the death of the Hollywood blockbuster.

"The market forces that exist today make it unrealistic to spend $200 million on a movie," said Lucas, a near-billionaire from his feverishly franchised outer-space epics. "Those movies can't make their money back anymore. Look at what happened with 'King Kong.'" The portly Lucas, whose "Star Wars" sequel was nominated for the Oscar in makeup, was clearly in Yoda mode at Saturday's Weinstein Co. party — Harvey Weinstein's first Oscar bash since he abandoned Miramax to Disney last year. "I think it's great that the major Oscar nominations have gone to independent films," Lucas told me, adding that it's no accident that the "small movies" outclassed the spectaculars in this year's Academy Awards. "Is that good for the business? No — it's bad for the business. But moviemaking isn't about business. It's about art!"

Was that a smirk? "In the future, almost everything that gets shown in theaters will be indie movies," Lucas declared. "I predict that by 2025 the average movie will cost only $15 million." [Source: nydailynews.com]

Uhh... I find it a bit disturbing that you actually let your personal descisions be influenced by things like this thread. Well better a lame excuse than no excuse at all, right?

Lucas had announced plans for a 6 dvd set a long time ago. The term "archival edition" is also something he brought up in the same article. As far as I remember it was planned to have several incomplete (yes, ironic) versions of the films - one without music, one with only the music, one without visual fx etc. - the idea was obviously to show how important each element of a film is. However that Lucas statement is very old by now and since his plans seem to change by the minute, you'll never know what's going to happen next.

And hey kev, I would really appreciate if you'd stop the unprovoked flamage - it really gets on my nerves.
