For me...it all came out in the end...
Time
As I said: I would already have been happy with the limited edition "bonus discs", would it not have been for the technically flawed german audio track of anh - everything would have been settled for me. At this point I don't really care anymore if Lucas takes me serious as a fan, but at least I want to be taken serious as a customer. If that'll happen one day and he stops playing "screw the customer" he can go on playing "screw the fan" through his frankensteining with the films all he wants, I'll be fine with that since I'll have a choice which of his gadzillion incarnations of his "final vision" I want to watch.

Seeing how things are handled by 2oth century fox here in germany, I'm not getting my hopes up for 2007. We'll have to wait and see, I guess.

Well, to tell the truth: I would have been very happy if the german audio track of the limited edition's OOT version of ANH would not be missing quite a chunk of dialogue. I have phoned 2oth century fox and they said I should get a substitution at my local retailer, which I did (it had the same flaws). Then they told me to send a request to a certain fox e-mail adress - I haven't gotten an answer it's been more than 3 weeks now.

My problem is not what George Lucas does as an artist. My problem is, what George Lucas doesn't do because he is too cheap to go all the way in terms of quality. It's not a matter of "I don't like this artistic change to the special edition" or "I don't like the story arc of the prequels", it's just a matter of inferior quality on a purely technical level that aggravates me the most.

It simply doesn't matter anymore what versions you prefer when it comes to the OT - neither the 2004 editions, nor the limited edition "bonus discs" represent the technical level of quality that is standard nowadays.

All I wish for, is a _technically unflawed_ product from Lucasfilm when it comes to the OOT _and_ the special editions.

Lucas Interview from 1979 - Alan Arnold's 'Once Upon a Galaxy' book

I beg to differ. The three parts of the prequels don't even represent what you describe, and thus the PT represents a rather unstable foundation for the OT. But happily for all of us, George is busy working on fixing this by adjusting the artistic level of the OT to that of the PT.

Lucas Interview from 1979 - Alan Arnold's 'Once Upon a Galaxy' book

I think this interview pretty much shows that even back then the idea to use StarWars as a cash cow to realize his ambitious project of a "filmmaking research facility" had already rooted in his mind. The prequels with their heavy accent on special effects and mediocre attention to plot and emotionality reflect him being mostly worried about the special effects and the evolvement of the filmmaking process (which seems to have been his main function and concern in ESB and ROTJ already). Perhaps if he hadn't done the mistake to do everything himself again in the prequels, the PT might have been a lot better.

Tarkin, The Rebel Base & The Mystery Of The Trash Compactor.

Yah, Lucas even talks about this in the audio commentary of the 2004 editions. He explains that the speed of a hyperdrive system is mostly determined by the strength of the navigation computer and not by it's engines. The better that computer is, the more precise it can calculate shortcuts that would represent a higher risk to ships who had a computer that couldn't deliver very precise course calculations in a short amount of time, and thus have to take a longer route to evade space hazards that could proove fatal to the ship and crew.

hi original trilogy peple
Time
As far as I remember, it all started with a comment from an interview with George Lucas in which he reiterated the OOT would technically not exist to him anymore and that the statement (for the last time on home video) back in '95 was in fact not a Lucasfilm marketing hoax. It was a pretty exciting time for me to see how many other people shared my preference of the original threatrical cuts (and back then I did not really think we'd see any kind of release anytime soon).

You've Failed, Your Highness.

I think you can never "read too much into something". If you come up with an imaginative expansion of a simple thing and it fits so beautifully like this one - it's merely taking the story into a larger world. I love how passion for a thing that at first glance looks like "a mistake" can turn into an intrigueing detail (even if it may truly be a mistake of the author). Colorful imagination > dry scepticism when it comes to enjoy a film, I say.

Thanks for that Scruffy.

Do you REALLY think there will be remastered versions of the OOT or whatever? I don't.

George Lucas isn't about OOTs or SEs or prequels. He is about earning money through artificially keeping demand alife through selling inferior products.
Nuff said.

German ANH DVD OOT audio track: Entire part of dialogue missing in Chapter 13

I haven't noticed that one. To which scene are you referring?

The only other "soundbug" I noticed in the german dub is one of Luke's words during the lightsaber training sequence on the falcon is missing an "n" - like when an audio tape is broken at some point and your hear just some noise instead of the sound of the spoken letter.

Edit: Welcome to the boards!

George Lucas isn't about OOTs or SEs or prequels. He is about earning money through artificially keeping demand alife through selling inferior products. It doesn't matter which versions you want. At the current time - all classic trilogy dvd content out there, represents a technically flawed and inferior product when compared to other releases of similar importance.

It's amazing to me, that some people have not yet realized that this isn't an OOT vs. SE issue anymore.

Help Wanted: Despaired fan of the german OOT seeks help on where to find information on how to create a fan edit

But, back on topic - what hardware/equipment and software do you guys recommend for editing a film? And are there any good websites that offer some knowledge as to how to get started with editing and such things? I already have googled a bit, but so far have found only one site that seems pretty decent.

Uhh... that was amongst the things I reported as missing in my post.

I have sent a mail to 2oth Century Fox germany and intend to give them a call as well. I'm just curious how they will handle this (if they'll do at all).
