Episode IX: The Rise Of Skywalker - Discussion * SPOILER THREAD *

Yeah, I’m sure any forthcoming trailers will ramp up my excitement. More than anything else, the one thing I want to see in Ep. IX is ghost Luke haunting Kylo Ren. After that, I’m good.

I think “haunting” is the wrong term to use. I still think having the force ghosts of Luke and Anakin (reprised by Hayden Christensen) coming before Ben would be cool to see. I really think it can work well.

I have much less interest in seeing IX than I did in VIII. The main reason for this, and one of my biggest gripes with The Last Jedi is that it didn’t really leave any loose ends. That’s kind of an issue if you want to generate anticipation for your next film.

I am really for excited for Episode IX. In fact, it’s been reported by Collider that we may be seeing footage of Episode IX this December!

Regardless, the real reason people don’t see as one vision is because TLJ seems to go against everything TFA values.

It’s upsetting to me that Episode IX is already being hated on before it’s released. I loved both The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi, but there is no disconnect between them. The Last Jedi expanded so much on the Star Wars legacy and mythology, something that will help Star Wars still keep going on for another forty years without being worn out. There are many people out there who were disappointed with Episode VIII simply because the film didn’t play out as the movie they wrote in their head leading up to its release. The extreme reactions are ridiculous, unbearable, and disgusting for their behavior for not liking the movie.

I have to give props to Anthony Daniels performance as C-3PO in all of the movies . Emoting through a plastic suit and getting fear and anxiety across through his motions and the art of mime .

Anthony Daniels really loves playing Threepio. He’s even voiced him in almost every TV show, special, and game too.

Just don’t know to be honest, its been shown since star wars 77 and especially over the last two movies that its really being changed and evolving on the move. ie:It really didn’t have an arc. Each movie is being written on the fly. I really think that’s why that scene was thrown on the end of Solo.
But what do I know?

I wouldn’t necessarily say that the sequel trilogy is being changed in between films. I believe that J.J. set up that Rey’s parents were nobody, and that is something that Rian Johnson carried over into The Last Jedi. I also think that J.J. intentionally also set up the romantic relationship being developed between Rey and Kylo Ren.

Don’t know if this has been said before but I have a sneaky feeling Rey is the child of Q’ira. Darth Maul created life ala Plaeguies. Don’t say much on the site anymore just thought I’d chime in with my theory after reading some of your thoughts.

I believe that the story arc of Rey’s parents are finished. Rey even told Ben that she knew they were nobody the whole time deep inside her, despite that she didn’t want to believe it. Daisy Ridley even confirmed in an interview with Rolling Stone a couple of months after the release of The Last Jedi that the revelation of her parents in VIII is what she was told from the beginning when she signed on to the trilogy. I personally like the direction of her parents being irrelevant, but I’m sorry to you and anyone holding on that she was related to a familiar character from the past.

No way. JJ is an OT fanboy. He’s gonna use Lando as much as possible, as well as force ghost Yoda and Luke. But not Hayden (which would be a great way to at least create somewhat of a unification between George’s saga and the Disney saga).

Just because J.J. Abrams is not a fan of the prequels, it doesn’t mean that he can’t use elements from them in a good way. There were some bad elements about the prequels, but there were also some good elements. It’s mainly the way the films turned out in the end which was disappointing. I don’t blame Hayden Christensen for his poor performance, I mainly lay the blame on George Lucas. He was the director, and the director is supposed to get the best performance out of their actors (something that George has struggled with when he is directing a film). J.J. Abrams, and yes, even Rian Johnson, are able to do that job well.

I hope the movie doesn’t end with a fight between Rey and Kylo. Rey has already beaten Kylo twice, how is there supposed to be any drama?

There can still be plenty of drama between the two of them. Especially based on where Ben will go. Not to mention, there’s also the romantic and sexual tension still occurring between the two of them.

For me, Adam Driver has some of the best acting moments in the entirety of Star Wars. Particularly his quieter, more intimate scenes.

I’m thinking the interrogation of Rey in TFA and just after they fight the red guards in TLJ. There’s a strange, guarded vulnerability that he captures so well.

I agree with you!

This is a good idea for a thread! I’m gonna try to pick more underrated choices from each trilogy.

For the Prequels, I would definitely have to say Ian McDiarmid as Palpatine/Sidious. He basically plays two different characters, and he can easily go from kind/friendly, manipulative, to evil incarnate. He’s fun to watch, and his best scene probably has to be the Opera Scene in ROTS.

For the Original Trilogy, I have to agree with Nev and suggest Frank Oz as Yoda. I think the act of performing Yoda was a real pain for Oz, having to not really see who he was performing with, and being cramped underneath the hot stage with his hand up a puppet. But he made Yoda feel real, and made you feel the emotions that Yoda felt, whether it be curiosity, hesitation, disappointment, wisdom, etc.

For the Sequels, it is hard to choose because I think it has some of the best performances in the franchise, but for the amount of pressure I can only imagine he had to have been under, I think Mark Hamill gave his best performance as Luke Skywalker ever, even though he had only acted on-camera occasionally for the past several years. And considering how Hamill apparently didn’t agree with the choices made for his character in the film, he proved he could give the performance regardless of his own opinions, and he really get that pain and emotion across on screen.

To me, Mark Hamill gave his best performance as Luke in The Last Jedi. Daisy Ridley and Adam Driver also deserve a lot of praise with how intriguing and emotional they were able to play the characters of Rey and Kylo Ren.

Reading The Making of The Empire Strikes Back, it becomes clear how much the very soul of Star Wars hinged on making the audience believe in the reality of a talking frog. That this worked at all is a miracle, and a lot of it has to do with the talents of Frank Oz.

If the onscreen chemistry between the puppet and Mark Hamill had not worked, the movie would have failed.

Who do you think gave the best performance as their characters in the movies? Whether it be Harrison Ford as Han Solo, Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan Kenobi, or even Adam Driver as Kylo Ren, post your thoughts in the thread of who you thought gave the best performance in the franchise. Voiceover roles could also be considered, such as James Arnold Taylor as Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Just wanted to share some predictions I have for Episode IX. I know many others have shared the same/similar ideas already.

Ben Solo will be redeemed, and him and Rey will end up in a relationship, or at the very least a heavily implied relationship.

There will be some kind of emphasis on how Rey will make sure the new Jedi will be different than the old. We will see all of this talk of balance in action.

Finn will play a crucial part in liberating the First Order’s Stormtrooper army, and in a larger view be instrumental in the reunification of the First Order and the Resistance into a new government, which are technically both descended from the Old Republic.

Ben Solo will have some kind of reunion with Leia, even if it is just at the end of the movie.

I know these are pretty general predictions, so I’ll make one bold one.

I have a strong feeling that the title of the film will be Star Wars: Balance of the Force.

I actually agree with you. I don’t know what the title will be, but I think you’re on point. But then again, anything is possible.

Where should Lucasfilm go after Episode IX?

I think Lucas lost momentum by waiting so long between trilogies. But to be honest, I think the only way any more movies were going to happen was if Lucas removed himself. I think if he would have tried to the the sequels that he would have ended up with the same problem as the prequels - no one wanted to direct them with him staring over their shoulder. I think we will find that the sequels are really his story with some changes to make them work better. There are hints at that already. They may have moved as far from George’s treatments as some of his films did from treatment to film.

I think they should make some movies, take a break, make some more, take a break. I don’t think they gave Solo enough time. They should have stuck with the Christmas releases.

Trilogies make nice longer stories in digestable installments. Lots of franchises use trilogies. But the one off stories are awesome as well.

I believe Dave Filoni had some trouble making The Clone Wars when it first debuted, due To George Lucas interfering. The Clone Wars movie that came out in theaters is just four episodes of the show mashed together, because they were being rushed by George because he wanted a movie in theaters.

As for the new era of Star Wars, I think that Lucasfilm should take at least a nice five year break after Episode IX before doing ANY new movies (both saga and spin-off films).

Honestly, I would prefer they lay off the Skywalker saga for a long while. Perhaps they could pick it up again someday, with something like a 100 year timegap.

Sounds perfect. I can’t imagine that time gap would match the real one though. I think 50 would be decent compromise, but I don’t think the corporate machine could wait that long.

I wouldn’t call it the “Skywalker saga.” It may have focus on the Skywalker family, but it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s about them. The originals were its own thing, the prequels told the backstory of the characters from the classic trilogy, and the sequels are about new characters, while the original characters still have a major role in the films, since we want to see where they are, not to mention them being galactic heroes. If Lucasfilm decides to make Episodes X, XI and XII, I think it would be a nice Segway from Episode IX to the fourth trilogy by having Rey and Ben lead off with their potential kids. Yes, I do think Kylo Ren and Rey will, in a way, end up together. Those are just my thoughts.

Look, I’m not gonna act like the Sequels have been the greatest addition to the mythos, but by God Lucasfilm needs stand by its decisions. Remember the Paradigm Daleks?

Also, Rogue One was awesome.

I love the sequel trilogy. Why is there so much hate for it!? Did everyone forget about the prequels!?

Please get off Ryan’s cock. TLJ sucks ass!! At least the prequels had some watchability

Be nice, or be dog food.

Thank you very much for standing up for me, but I think it is best that you do not give any toxic bullies in the fanbase any notification and recognition by not responding to them. You are just giving them justification by doing so. I just wish the toxicity in the Star Wars fanbase will stop. It’s awful.

The fact is this is a small community, so you can’t just walk away from bullies and expect to never see them again.

I agree with you. When Hayden Christensen stood up for Kelly Marie Tran after being harassed online, he told her:

“I don’t know if I have any advice for that, but just…you know, don’t take it too seriously, because…unfortunately, [bullies] are the ones that make the most noise. But the majority of people don’t feel that way, so, keep that in mind.”
