The ‘Custom Special Edition’ That Almost Wasn’t, But Then Was (Released)

Well I’m not a fan of the shockwaves anyway, and I didn’t really have great ways to remove the other two. I didn’t want the battle of Yavin to only have one OOT shot at the most critical moment. So I removed the DSII shockwave so it’s not like all OT and only OT explosions have them.

I tried to list ROTJ on the site but there was a cryptic error that I couldn’t figure out and I haven’t gone back yet to try again.

I get you. I personally liked the shockwaves anyway. As for the IFDB listing, it’ll be up eventually once you get things worked out.

Hey, Hal, I have two things to ask.

First, when do you think your edit of Return of the Jedi will make its way to fanedit.org?

Second, I wanted to ask why you reverted the second Death Star’s explosion to its original state. I know someone here probably discussed this with you, but I wanted to know as I loved the look in the Special Edition of the explosion ring chasing after the Falcon as it flies off.

Honestly, despite helping Hal and other editors here on their edits, I practically distanced myself from the Star Wars fanbase after how toxic things got after the release of The Last Jedi. Even though I’m still a huge fan, I can’t really get myself to become a part of many fandoms due to this behavior, especially with the recent horrific news that occurred with Laura Bailey on The Last of Us: Part II. So I’d like for us to not talk about these false rumors about the Sequel Trilogy, as that conversation can be moved to a more appropriate thread than this one, as Hal would also like to as well.

I myself was very disappointed in The Rise of Skywalker, and being a fan of Hal’s edits knew he’d make a great edit. I won’t lie that we have had to get creative with the lack of deleted scenes, but it has been a fun, yet sometimes challenging task. But regardless, let’s get back finishing off the saga strongly, and even talk about the Rey nobody version.

I’ve been looking into deleted scenes and such, and something tells me that Disney and Lucasfilm may or may not release the scenes as of right now so controversy and conversations over what the movie could have been are sparked while it’s still fresh in everyone’s minds. They may do it once people may have forgotten about it or something, I don’t know. Regardless, I’m not sure what they’re going to do for this as of now since it seems like they’re starting to distance themselves from the trilogy already.

Here’s a shot of a First Order destroyer explosion from Battlefront: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1h-7Rwh1w3X8TPY3v-0ZGiVL8HnKvzaW8/view?usp=sharing

I think shrunk down and with some color correction, blu, and grain, it could blend with the shot from Phantom Menace. I attempted it myself but I’m not going to share because I’m new at effects shots and it looks quite bad.

You need to mark it as shareable. We need to request access to it.

IMO, I think if you leave out the transports landing, but go straight to the interior shot of the stormtroopers disembarking and then charging into battle, it looks good. I also think muting the Battlefront footage would help, if you were to keep it in.

Strongly agree here. Not that I’m a big fan of the Battlefront stuff, but the landing is the worst part due to the odd speed and camera angle, and there shouldn’t be any voices when they leave so that it flows a bit better into Kylo’s reveal.

I threw together a SUPER rough cut in the default Windows editor of how this would look.

I like the battlefront footage, but I don’t want to throw half the viewing audience. The people that I showed this to that I know in real life were themselves split along the lines of people who play video games and people who don’t. I don’t know what it is about that footage, but if it is going to be drawing to a number of people I’d prefer not to include it in the very first scene. Just having the one shot of the TIEs added works better than I imagined it would. So I’m happy for the TIE fighters to show up, have a drum solo for a minute, and then proceed with the movie.

Dido!

I don’t know if we should be having this discussion in Hal’s thread. It seems like it would go better in the general ideas thread, and Hal doesn’t really seem interested in adding Palpatine’s message.

This.
Please listen to this.

yeah, it’s getting a tad fanedit-y

Agreed. While ambitious ideas can sometimes work, they need to be done seamlessly to feel as if it’s in the actual film so the audience can feel like they’re watching a movie, rather than a fan edit.

I went ahead and mocked up trying to fix Poe’s somehow line… it is only a first version so I’m still coming up with ideas but here is the link. I also removed the “Secrets only the Sith knew…” I’ve never personally had an issue with the line but it might be nice to see what it looked like.

Not a bad first attempt, needs some work, but a pretty good start.

Personally, I would remove Leia’s line, “Rey. Never be afraid of who you are.”

If you remove that line would you also remove the same line from Sith Rey?

Nah, I wouldn’t. If we were going with a Rey nobody approach, having Leia say it to her implies her lineage, and not to mention, it would make Rey taking on the Skywalker name have a far greater effect and it wouldn’t feel as if she’s going against what Leia told her. Also, at that point in the film when her Dark Side self appears, it can be implied that she would be referring to Rey’s inner Dark Side, and it’s a temptation that the vision and Kylo Ren would be egging her onto.
