Dom's (Possibly) Useful TROS Edit (WIP)
Time

I checked out some of the stuff for your workprint. The music used of Kylo Ren approaching Palpatine’s lair was nice, but I also liked the Opera House music you used in your Vimeo clip as well. I think the transitions from Kylo Ren to Rey, and from Rey to the Falcon could have been straight cuts instead of diagonal wipes, as it doesn’t come off as too distractive. I also think the shot of Leia from the trailer added in as the Falcon takes off, while nice, doesn’t seem to work that well for me. The extensions of shots taken from the trailers were nice and I thought the hanger room scene’s reveal was a very creative replacement. I was also surprised how much I liked the addition of an instrumental rendition of Duel of the Fates to the duel. Having Leia call out to Ben in the way you did was nice, but I think it could be refined a bit more. However, I think your workprint is in a good state for you want it, Dom. Just curious if you’ve seen the color correction done in Hal’s edit and was wondering if you were interested in using those CUBE files. Lastly, even though your workprint is in Stereo, I was wondering if the final edit will be in 5.1 surround sound. That’s all I really have to say, but I can’t wait to see it finished. Great work!

The Kylo reveal has been a real bugbear for me and the thing that ultimately stalled the edit back in the summer because I wasn’t happy with my solution. But after seeing RogueLeader’s take in the “Rey Nobody” thread, I have an idea for something very similar that should work. As for the Palpatine scene, it’s pretty straightforward, just removing mention of their relation.

I did takes on them a while back if you want to check them out.

Well, anyways. I had an idea for the crackly saber, which I’m not entirely sure if you have this intention in mind, Hal, but here it is.

We all know exactly why Kylo Ren’s crossguard saber has an unstable blade. Symbolically, it reflects the internal conflict in his character. Now the scene in The Force Awakens where he attempts to use the Force on Anakin’s saber and flies towards Rey shows that he is not worthy to wield the Skywalker lightsaber, due to his place on the Dark Side, despite being a part of the family line.

The decision to make Anakin’s saber have an unstable blade in this edit is to obviously connect with how it broke in half in The Last Jedi. I figured, what if the kyber crystal forged back together properly once Rey hands it to Ben on Exegol to symbolize that his internal conflict is no more, and that he is now worthy to wield it. One last fizzle, and then the proper blade should do it for VFX. Afterall, Rey did heal his scar when healing him on Endor.

You think you’ll make a trailer for your Sequel edits like you did for your edits of the Prequels, Hal?

I played with the idea a couple weeks ago but found I didn’t have the right time and energy for it. For that prequel trailer I really just overlaid clips to the TFA trailer’s music. I think if I were to, I’d do something similar with another film’s trailer music. But it didn’t work out when I last sat down with the idea. Idk

You could do the same in terms of overlaying clips to the music of The Rise of Skywalker’s trailer.

The ‘Custom Special Edition’ That Almost Wasn’t, But Then Was (Released)

Well, I have included it in order to resolve the error in favor of the SE since Adywan’s Revisited was based on the same primary source. This time that’s not the case and the two didn’t really work when put next to each other, so I reverted it to the OOT version of that shot.
Fortunately the Emperor scene worked perfectly well, being in a separate environment.

Okay. Is this because Adywan’s Empire Strikes Back project was 720p? On a side note, isn’t funny how YouTube doesn’t consider that resolution to be HD anymore?

I no longer use Adywan footage save for the Emperor hologram scene.

Wait! What about the part where the Special Edition screwed up their enhanced background. After Lando betrays Han and Leia to Vader, Adywan changed the background with the existing Special Edition background for consistency.

I don’t think that was ever part of this project. If you want those kind of fixes it’s best to just watch Revisited.

No! Hal did incorporate that in his edit of The Empire Strikes Back.
