Hi all,

I’m a member of the team at Leigh Film Factory, an independent cinema in the North West of England.

We’ve been lucky enough to get permission to screen the original trilogy on the Sunday of the May bank holiday weekend - 7th May. Tickets are available now if anyone is close by, or if anyone fancies travelling 😃

Hope to see some of you there,

Kevin @ Leigh Film Factory

Which version of the Original Trilogy films will you be showing?

Things that make you realise you're getting older
Time
  1. It takes two attempt and a loud exhale to get off the couch

  2. The MILF section on adult sites all look considerably younger than you

  3. Received a text last month: “In 7 years time the 80’s will be 50 years ago”. I laughed instantly because the 80’s were only a few… ah shit.

On the bright side you give less fucks about the trivial stuff than before. Now get off my lawn!

The original Force Unleashed is the best Star Wars game.
Time

I would have liked to have seen the third TFU game released, supposedly to conclude the Starkiller story. But it would have to been more engaging and fun than the uninspiring and repetitive gameplay for TFU II.

Another victim of LucasArts being closed down by Disney shortly after the 2012 takeover, although the game was only in “the initial ideas phase”: https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/Star_Wars:_The_Force_Unleashed_III

I agree with many of you, this show is amazing! Gilroy manages to expand the GFFA with new aspects and stories and make them interesting with great writing and the actors deliver with their performances. Tired, easy tropes are left in the background, we barely see x-wings, TIEs show up for a few moments and stormtroopers are in the background until the season finale. Gilroy not being a big SW fan really helped the show, as he probably had sort of a outsider eye for the whole thing. And they still have some hardcore fans in the production to make the world’s details match with what has come before. The fan service is organic and not in your face.

I never thought we’d see lines of dialogue delivered in such a great manner again in Star Wars. The four main monologues now up on the official Star Wars channel are a joy to watch and listen to. Just four among many of the strong acting performances and high standards of writing and character interactions throughout the series:

Kino Loy - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TKB67KzjO4A

Luthen Rael - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-3RCme2zZRY

Nemik - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-asb8zTiuZ4

Maarva - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TaKrm5txGCQ

I also loved the “That’s just love” scene between Cassian and Maarva, I must have been cutting onions watching that. The same with Cassian receiving the news at the end of Episode 11. Diego Luna is such an amazing and nuanced actor in this.

And the Mon Mothma character throughout the series has been wonderful to watch, Genevieve O’Reilly was simply fascinating to watch on screen.

Tony Gilroy certainly has his work cut out for the season 2:

https://www.vulture.com/article/andor-tony-gilroy-finale-interview.html

"What we’re working on now, the second part of this project, is not about Cassian becoming radicalized. It is very much about, How difficult is it for the Rebel Alliance to come together with all the outliers and original gangsters? Different agendas and betrayals? The tension of the next four years as things pull together? The effect of time on people? "

George Lucas should get more credit for &quot;saving Anakin Skywalker&quot; in Star Wars: The Clone Wars.
Time

of_Kaiburr_and_Whills said:

I think a lot of people conveniently forget Lucas’s impact on The Clone Wars when it comes to discourse. Lucas was at the head of the table in those writing rooms. If I’m not mistaken, most of the storylines and characters come straight from him. No episode got finalized without Lucas seeing it all the way through and approving it. That’s not to say it wasn’t a collaboration. It certainly was with all the writers, Lucas, and Filoni as director, and it was a type of collaboration not seen since Return of the Jedi I’d say.

I think you could be right, but also that a lot of people may not even know of George’s input into TCW, that they think it was Filoni as the head or being in charge of it all? Or that there wasn’t a collaboration or partnership? (why, I don’t know). It would be interesting to see a poll on this.

<s>The inaccuracies in &quot; How Star Wars Was Saved in the Edit&quot;</s>
Time

Isn’t this already discussed at length in here:

https://originaltrilogy.com/topic/RocketJumps-Video-on-Star-Wars-being-saved-in-the-edit-is-Literally-a-Lie-no-it-is-not/id/84279/page/1

If that is the same video then it is a brave thing to post on here considering it shits on fan preservations and fan edits in the 15 minute summary at the end. Rocket Jump talking about the Special Editions, George Lucas making “tons of unnecessary changes”, and the unaltered theatrical cuts being the version of the films that won the Oscar for best editing, really seemed to trigger Nerdonymous.

And so Nerdonymous went on another rant about fans who didn’t like what George did with the Special Editions, or prefer the unaltered theatrical cut, somehow want to “take everything away from Lucas” and “burn Lucas to the ground”. Because some people did a video talking about the power of editing film and how it can have a big effect in general, this film especially? And Nerdonymous thinks that the Rocket Jump video is somehow an “attack video” and an attempt to discredit George Lucas? He had droned on for 2 hours, and often repeated himself, so it was difficult to stay focused. He really needs a good editor. Anyone know of any?

G&G-Fan said:

Correct. He did a lot of research clearly which is really awesome. And it proves that RocketJump wasn’t exactly being genuine in his portrayal of Lucas and the making of the movie.

I’ve discussed this video with people here before, and people got upset about it. And yeah, the guy can be passive aggressive and somewhat mean, which is a problem, but a lot of the points are still valid. I can understand being mad about slander and misinformation about something you love at the same time though. People getting upset at the video was also probably partially due to the way I talked about it, due to my explosive nature. I think you’ll get a lot better reception as you’re way cooler and more level-headed and this post is much more objective.

You got schooled hard in that thread. Sorry, I didn’t see anyone in there upset apart from you, the like minded troll, and some weird claims from you about the Rocket Jump video, like “So uh, yeah… Goerge Lucas didn’t suck and it wasn’t the editors that created Star Wars”, getting taken apart.

Then the 2 hour Nerdonymous video also got taken apart in there.

Like I said above, I think it was a brave thing to post that Nerdonymous video on here considering it shits on fan preservations and fan edits. Brave or stupid or maybe naive, if you thought nobody would call that part of the video out. No disrespect, just saying it like I see it.

Spaceman’s 15 minute review video Andor Is A Star Wars Masterpiece From 1978 more or less puts my thoughts into better words than I ever could come up with.

It is a drag we have to wait until 2024? to see Andor’s 2nd season, but for this quality a show, I will happily wait. The first time since 1983 that felt a believable, compelling and expansive part built upon OT universe. With honorable mentions for R1 and Solo in parts.

I also find it refreshing to see people from all across the fandom enjoy the show online too. To see that love and appreciation for Star Wars once again.

Thanks for that recommendation; what a terrific YouTube review that is.

I’ve really enjoyed watching some of the review videos on Andor. It is refreshing to see so many positive videos on it, covering everything from cinematography, to the acting, to writing, to design. Even on the sound editing and music in the series, or even those sometimes cringey “reaction” videos have had some good insights and thoughts on the series as it progressed.

Star Wars Episode IX (was) to be directed by Colin Trevorrow - DUEL OF THE FATES RIP

The Joe Kenobi YouTube channel has released a near 3 hour video for Star Wars: Episode IX: Duel of the Fates Motion Comic (full movie).

Is is based on the completed comic fan works of Andrew Winegarner, here https://www.awinegarner.com/duel-of-the-fates

I haven’t had chance to watch all of it yet, only the first 10 minutes, but it does look fun watch and cool idea for anyone who found Duel of the Fates interesting and wanted more.

Should I watch the prequels on DVD or Disney+?
Time

gmarsh1996 said:

The changes to the prequels are very minor, nothing comparable to the special edition debacle with the original trilogy. That being said, D+ will give you the highest quality. I’m partial to the 4K Blu Rays, personally, as I like physical media.

Disney+ is better quality than the 4K discs? Is that for all the films, or just the Prequels?

I read the first one and enjoyed most of them. Was Empire’s version any good too?

If they do one for ROTJ I hope they have the Rancor keeper. And both a Rebel and Imperial perspective from after the DSII blew up. What happened? Did the Imperial fleet simply fly away and regroup somewhere, or stay and fight?

Return Of The Jedi's 40th anniversary
Time

25th May 2023 sees the 40th anniversary of the Return Of The Jedi.

There is already the usual official merchandise such as classic figures, playsets & vehicles, lego, tee shirts, lightsabers, coins, calendars, comics, Revell models, and those awful Funko Pops.

Some of it was even released in 2022. Even with the official “ROTJ at 40” logo on it!

How will you be celebrating the 40th anniversary?

What do you hope to see released as part of it? Apart from a unaltered cut release of the OT films?

I’m hoping for a new documentary on the making of ROTJ from the crew’s point of view. Or at least some new interviews and short videos put up on the official site, like they did for Empire’s 40th, and Star Wars’ 40th.

Edit: The official Star Wars website now has a “Return Of The Jedi at 40” portal: www.starwars.com/jedi-40th.
But there is nothing new of any substance on there yet (unless you count a new article linking to old deleted scenes).

I wanted to come up with a name to describe the preservation projects done here and by other people. But without sounding like… I had an eye patch and a parrot on my shoulder.

This is my latest idea.

F.P.D. Future Public Domain
or
F.P.D.P. Future Public Domain Preservation

Everything should technically become Public Domain some day in the Future, but it may not exist then.

Fan and Amateur Preservation Projects.

FAPPs for short.

It may need some more work!

What is your personal canon?
Time

My onscreen personal canon:

The unaltered Original Trilogy
Rogue One
Solo
Andor
Mandalorian
Visions

and I’ll have to include the Holiday Special as well, though I do try and avoid it whenever possible. Or just try and remember the “good” parts in it.

LexX said:

My personal canon are:

  • OOT
  • Classic LucasArts games that aren’t based on the PT up to Jedi Academy (so X-Wing series, Dark Forces series, KOTOR I-II, Rebel Assault I-II etc.)
  • Al Williamson’s classic comics (B&W + Marvel)
  • and as an epilogue but more of an addon than actual canon maybe, the Thrawn trilogy

Probably forgot something but basically most good stuff surrounding the OT without any PT or Disney tarnishing.

Games and comics too? I should include those too, though will need to have a good long think about that.

Show us the Death Star II construction
Time

I’d love to see a series along the lines and style of Andor for the building of the Death Star II. The politics, fallout and uncertainty of the Imperials POV after losing their proud technological marvel to a bunch of plucky Rebels would be something to see, as they realise they now have to build a second Death Star, or perhaps already had and now needed to hasten its completion. And from Mon Mothma and the Rebel POV as well. The Rebel interactions with the Bothans, their network and their sacrifice. It would make for such an alluring concept.

Was anything written about this from fans before the EU, like with the popular Fall of the Republic story treatment on Anakin’s fall to the dark side by the highly talented John L Flynn?

<strong>Ahsoka</strong> (live action series) - general discussion thread

Dave Filoni Calls Disney+'s Ahsoka a ‘Religious Experience’ from Direct

Ahsoka star Rosario Dawson revealed that Dave Filoni had actually watched an episode of the upcoming show and commented on how “it was a religious experience.”

The lead actress mentioned that the episode was “already edited together,” and also stated that it had an emotional impact on Filoni and producer Carrie Beck:

“So, I will say this. I will probably get in trouble for saying this, but Dave [Filoni] saw one of the episodes already edited together, and he walked up, him and Carrie Beck, both, like, glossy-eyed, and he said to me that it was 'a religious experience.”

I hope Filoni means"a religious experience" in a good Ahsoka-meriting-her-own-live-action-series achievement type of way, and not simply continuing on from what we’ve already seen in the animated series and briefly in Mando & BOBF. It will be some feat to give Ahsoka a well crafted and compelling story in live action, as that is what many fans will be seeing her for the first time in, and also keeping the loyal animated fans content and interested too.

After Andor and 1st season Mandalorian, I yearn for more show of that quality and experience, and not so much the largely forgettable BOTB, Kenobi or even some parts of 2nd season Mando. Another high grade hit offering something different from before would be most welcome, and without the familiar characters or cameos that featured in 2nd season Mando, BOBF and Kenobi (outside of the Ghost crew and Thrawn).

The same for me. An X Wing film is something of a no-brainer for Lucasfilm, One that should appeal to much of the fandom. I just hope they take their time and get it right.
