Info: The general 'How-To' questions and reference request thread...
Time

I made this a general help thread rather than just another random single question on one subject (trying to be helpful!)

I’m trying to use Windows DVD Maker to burn a single MP4 video onto a disc. In order to do this it needs to be in WMV format, I’ve tried using VLC media player to convert it but each attempt has produced a corrupt file. I’d prefer to use a free program as I only need to do this once so can anyone point me in the direction of something that can convert an MP4 into a file Windows DVD Maker will understand (or some other DVD maker for that matter!)?

Many thanks.

Idea: Preserving the original trilogy 2 - Drafting a manifesto

I feel like I’m listening to somebody talking on the phone and I can only hear one side of the conversation 😉

But seriously, I just wanted to say that I love your enthusiasm. I think I understand what your initial goal was and it seems like you’ve got a pretty decent grasp of the technical side but I think you should spend your summer doing something else. Another Star Wars related project that you can share with us.

It’s always nice to see somebody come along who wants to DO something rather than just talk about it! Don’t just give up altogether, there must be something else you can get working on?

Saw civil war for the third time last night. God damn what a gold movie.

I agree, as far as I’m concerned the MCU is going from strength to strength. Civil War has its critics, and some of their points might be valid, but to create a movie with that many moving parts and have it work as a standalone story, part of a larger arc, as a sequel, as a setup for the future and have it not only be coherent but exciting, surprising and fun takes a serious amount of skill.

Like you said, gold!

If you need to B*tch about something... this is the place

Why must builders listen to the radio at extremely loud volumes while they work? Even if they’re stood a few feet away why must they shout to one another? Why do they all drive the same dirty vans? Why is it okay for them to leave their equipment and supplies in the road overnight? AND WHY ON EARTH DOES THE LOCAL COUNCIL GIVE THEM PARKING DISPENSATIONS SO THEY DONT GET TICKETS WHILST MAKING ME PAY FOR THE PRIVILEGE OF PARKING IN FRONT OF MY OWN HOME?

I’m pretty down on builders right now.

Terminator: Genisys.

Thought Arnold was good. Thought Emilia Clarke was good. Thought J K Simmons was good. I liked some of the references, jokes, visual effects and stunts. Nice to see the time travel machine was based on the designs from T2.

I felt like it would’ve made a good mini-arc for The Sarah Connor Chronicles. Or maybe a final episode if a fan editor got involved?

But for every bit of care they took and everything they did right, there were dozens of things that were wrong. Overall, I just felt annoyed, and I’m generally a very forgiving viewer. I’m sure all involved had the best intentions but I can’t give it more than 3/10.

I really hope they just let this franchise go away and reboot it with new characters in a decade or so.

New Trailer for Beyond, and the announcement that Lin got the Axanar suit dropped.

I’m eager to see these “guidelines” for fan films. I’m sure the rules will be just as crippling to their original script as the lawsuit would be.

I think this situation will probably set the tone for how any future “infringements” are handled by rights holders. The fact that Justin Lin apparently convinced the suits to ease off and J J Abrams was the person to deliver the news makes me feel optimistic about fan films and fan edits too. It’s the faces the public sees and associates with the making of the films and the same ones the studios use to promote them.

I think it’s really all about public relations, the studio won’t want to appear as if they’re harassing the very fans they’ve been trying to cultivate to go see the films they’ve been ripping off in their fan films!

Fan edits might differ slightly because the material is being edited or added to but the bones of them are still the original copyrighted product and not a new creation but I honestly think the same PR mindset will ultimately apply. I think it’s why Disney hasn’t come down on, say, Harmy for his work because they have to be aware of it by now.

Maybe I’m being a bit too optimistic but I can see fan films/edits one day being legitimate and actually embraced by the studios and there to download or view right next to the official versions.

Buy The Wrath of Khan from Paramount and then you have the option to view all fan films or edits or submit your own. It’ll only ever be a niche activity and the average, curious consumer will get a kick out feeling more involved and Paramount will get bonus content and buzz about their product created for free whilst avoiding any bad press by having to chase down John and Joanie Editson for having infringed some copyright.

Everyone’s a winner really… or am I dreamin’?!

ONCE I AM ELECTED THERE WILL BE NO MORE BRITISH SPELLING OF WORDS

OUR COUNTRY IS THE GREATEST AND I WILL MAKE IT GREATERER BY ONLY ALLOWING APOSTROPHEMERICAN SPELLING

I’m not sure if I ever could’ve legally voted for you but I was doing my part regardless. I was handing out leaflets, giving impromptu talks in the queue at Tesco, I even got a little hairpiece and placed it atop my monitor in tribute.

Many in Great Britain were with you, debilitating effects of our inappropriate letter “U”'s and uneconomically long spelling of “jewellery” notwithstanding, we struggled but we believed in you.

Can’t you download a language package upgrade or something? Because this racial intolerance just isn’t cricket, old boy.

Year of the Devil

I bought the blu-ray, only to be baffled at the fact it’s in 480p!

I know that the TV airing was in Full HD, so does anyone know about anything?

Another film I’ve not heard of! It doesn’t seem to be readily available in a great many places that I have access to and I can’t find any technical specifications anywhere. Can we be sure that the HD broadcast wasn’t just an upscale?

I’ve added it to the list though, Hans. I really hope somebody else can shed a bit more light on this!

Is Batman: Mask of the Phantasm released in HD anywhere? I found that it’s available on a few streaming services, but I’m not sure if they’re in HD, or just the DVD data copied over.

I haven’t ever been able to find it. It doesn’t look like it’s available to stream in HD in the UK. I’ve never heard of it being broadcast on anything other than SD channels. Hopefully someone else can check if it’s available somewhere else in this world. I’ve added it to the list!

There’s not an awful lot available from the DCAU in HD. I’ve got Mystery of the Batwoman and Return of the Joker on blu-ray and the first two seasons of Justice League are available too (although they are cropped to 4:3.) Out of everything Mask of the Phantasm ought to be out there in HD as it definitely had a theatrical release.
