General Star Wars Random Thoughts Thread
Time

Given how the infamous (and probably not quite as substantial as the rumour mill would have us believe) reshoots to Rogue One weren’t mentioned in the blu ray documentary and the lack of director commentary on the film itself it’s going to be fascinating to see how the Han Solo movie’s production is presented to us on its blu ray next year. Because they really have to say something, don’t they?!

Split my video in half, uploaded it in two parts, and now they’re both blocked – within an hour after uploading them. Funny how poorly spliced-together clips from an episode of an unremarkable series which ended over a decade ago can warrant such immediate attention. But I suppose now I know why clips from that particular series are so hard to come by on YouTube.

YouTube sucks.

It’s bizarre what those YouTube algorithms flag as copyrighted material and what they don’t.

I used to use some background chart music on my vlogs and I got several copyright warnings but I’ve seen other channels use audio and video from TV and movies (including recorded-in-the-cinema cam footage!!) with impunity.

You didn’t have the video monetised or anything did you, Duracell? If not, I think you were just unlucky. What show was it anyway?

Really? They had in mind all along that it wasn’t him behind the mask? I don’t know whether that makes me feel better or worse about it!

As far as I’m concerned the entire series ends with Laurie chopping off Michael’s noggin and she lived happily ever after after reuniting with her son and long lost daughter.

Wonder Woman (2017 film)

I could learn a lot from this guy’s conciseness!

Anyway…

“Halloween H20: Twenty Years Later” (1998)

That’s a fine mouthful of a mess of a title but this lean, back-to-basics movie is a cracker (especially when compared to the previous two entries). I loved every minute and the face-off at the end was stupendously cathartic. I reckon it’s the second best in the series.

4 Chardonnay refills out of 5.

“Halloween Resurrection” (2002)

Oh, for crying out loud.

0 out 5.

I seem to remember reading somewhere that the plan was to make the Halloween movies an anthology, but after the third one didn’t do much business they scrapped that idea and went back to Michael Myers (and apparently felt the need to remind people he was in it by including his name in every title!) It’s a shame really because Season of the Witch was fun and creepy.

“Halloween 5 - The Revenge of Michael Myers” (1989)

The impact of the previous movie’s end was cruelly snatched away because the writer of this one couldn’t think of a way to continue it. So it was all in her head? Is that right, you talentless hack?

Danielle Harris’ performance alone gets this a 2 out of 5.

And despite some good ideas a young Paul Rudd’s enthusiastic use of a fire extinguisher to smash open a door is the only thing that gets 1995’s “Halloween 6 - The Curse of Michael Myers” up to 1 mark out of 5.

It’s utter shite.

Despecialized: DE onto USB for play on an LG OLED TV?
Time

You’ve got the MKVs? If so, plug the USB into either your telly or blu ray player and you’ll soon see if it recognises them. If it doesn’t try using a laptop with an HDMI cable connected to your tv. If none of that works use Handbrake to do a lossless conversion to MP4 and put that on a USB - I can’t imagine an LG OLED would object to that format!

I’m trying to binge all the Halloween movies I haven’t seen this weekend (which is most of them!) So…

“Halloween 4 - The Return of Michael Myers” (1988)

Better than I’d thought it would be. Nice to see Donald Pleasance still staggering around shouting at everybody. Very good to see people deciding to just get the hell out of town rather than try to take on the killer too, that’s some rare common sense (for all the good it did them!)

The end was a total shock, quite bold. I didn’t see it coming and it genuinely unsettled me.

Pretty decent all round, I give it 3 clown costumes out of 5.

“Willow Creek” (2013)

Found footage again. The first half is great, a Blair Witch style slow build but it soon becomes clear that this film’s restraint is its biggest fault. Not much happens at all until the last few seconds!

The two leads are likeable and the whole idea is something that could work well. But it’s just a bit dull.

The standout scene is a five minute single take inside a tent which starts with an awkward marriage proposal and ends with (we assume) Bigfoot stomping around outside. It’s all played off the character’s reactions to the sounds outside and it’s brilliant. Shame the rest of the film wasn’t up to the same standard.

I give it 2 unfriendly bearded yokels out of 5

(Bobcat Goldthwait wrote and directed it, so make of that what you will.)

Remember the criticism back in the day about how did the ewoks seem so prepared to fight the Empire’s troops so quickly?

The whole thing about how did they prepare those tree/log weapons so fast?

Assuming that the Empire began construction of the second Death Star soon after the first was destroyed (and did so near Endor) there is a 4 year period of time for the Ewoks to be aware of them.

And assuming they didn’t begin until after TESB that’s still about a year for the Ewoks to make their traps.

And even if they showed up a couple of weeks before ROTJ the sight of a giant round thing in their sky would’ve been enough to spur those little furries on to make the best defences they could - considering their entire lives were spent living off the land I don’t imagine they’d find it difficult to quickly create traps like that.

Where’s the plot hole?

I enjoyed the trailer, I think it looks interesting and different. I’d have preferred more traditional Trek-like music than that song though!

As for the latest spoiler, I’m giving them the benefit of the doubt because it seems too unnecessary to put it in there and have it go nowhere - there must be a pretty good story reason…

I hope?
