The Force Awakens: Official Review Thread - ** SPOILERS **

I think TFA is the sort of film Kershner meant when he expressed hesitancy to direct ESB because, ~“a second one would always just be a second one.”

You mean TFA is underrated because it’s a sequel ? I kind of think it is overrated because it came after the PT. Which does not mean it’s a bad movie (I’m still puzzled about it; if VIII and IX do the job I’ll probably love it as the first part of a whole, maybe as a ninth part).

Fans will anyway buy the bluray, with the highest video and audio quality (I highly doubt the leaked file weighs 50 Go or so).

Just a thought: is it the first time that a digital release (dvd, bluray, etc.) of a SW movie (I don’t count Clone Wars) is going to be the true theatrical version ? No line modified ? No sfx changed ? No wipe redone ? Nothing, no alterations, even minor ones ? This is history !

Do you think Disney will remake the prequels?
Time

You assume Disney would make good prequel movies. You assume too much. I don’t think TFA is good (watchable, fun, fast paced, action packed, nicely done à la “Star Trek 2009”: ok, but “good” like “Star Wars” or “Empire Strikes Back”, hell no !). The PT era cannot really be improved (the all concept of showing prior events is dumb; we didn’t need it to watch the OT for 22 years, we still don’t need it), even by rewritting it. GL failure is seeded since RETURN OF THE JEDI, the backstory of Anakin’s fall is too complex to make a truly good movie out of it (so the guy is a gifted pilot, a great Jedi, but he is seduced by the dark side which is embodied by an old man with yellow teeth and a cliché evil look, who happens to rule the Empire; he got his ass kicked and his children were dispatched just under his nose - I mean, his son is called Skywalker ! - and the guy never had a clue about it in 20 years ? Come on !). Another adaptation could be better (we can be pretty sure it would be), but I would’nt see the point of it since RETURN OF THE JEDI should be remade as well.

That being said, I would love to see movies set in the PT era (or between both trilogies) that capture the feeling of the OT with elements of the PT (like a side-PT, with unrelated characters who live their adventures in the outer rim). In a way, REBELS is exactly trying to do that. And it’s not really a good show (it’s watchable though), that’s why I don’t think that Disney could make a PT reboot that would please the fan base (fan base which is a little bit mixed about TFA). So, I guess, it’s time to move on: the PT exists (and fanedits improve them), Disney is unlikely to reboot them : TFA contains at least 3 references to the PT era (clone troopers, the balance of the Force, McGregor’s voice); REBELS is using plot elements from the CLONE WARS tv series; a recent REBELS episode has stated that “a huge weapon” was being built near Geonosis - take a guess -; ROGUE ONE might give a few nods to the PT era as well. And don’t forget that the 2011 bluray version of the OT is canon to Disney (which means: Hayden’s ghost - who was supposed to be in TFA -, cameo appareance of Naboo, Coruscant, a Dug).

So: “DO YOU THINK DISNEY WILL REMAKE THE PREQUELS?”
No, I don’t. They will probably make spin-off movies that can fill the PT-era gaps (convenient for those who hate the PT), but Anakin’s fall will never be remade. And we are not sure at all these movies will be good.

Ranking the Star Trek films (and/or series')
Time

Movies:

Very good ones:

 1. II- Wrath of Khan [space swashbuckling: what else ?]
 2. I- Motion Picture [I’m never really sure about this one: I like it, it’s beautiful with Goldsmith at his best]
 3. VI- Undiscovered Country [Could be ranked first, love the intelligent political plot, the music, the Klingons]
 4. Star Trek 2009 [like TFA : not very good when you take a close look, but an action packed sci-fi ride that gets the job done]

Then, mediocre but watchable:

 1. III- Search for Spock [transitionnal movie, not much happens but I can enjoy it within the franchise rather than a stand alone flick]
 2. Into Darkness [too hysterical, too talkative when unneeded, and dumb, with an awful script]
 3. IV- Voyage Home [like III: it’s fun to watch only to complete the Spock narrative arc]

And last, lazy and (really) bad:

 1. First Contact [Die Hard in the Enterprise but Picard is no McClane, terrible Earth sequences]
 2. V- Final Frontier [ambitious but not talent, except Goldsmith’s score]
 3. Insurrection [looks like the tv series, but too long and dull]
 4. Nemesis [well…]
 5. Generations [seriously ?]

TV Series:

 1. Deep Space Nine
 2. Next Generation
 3. Star Trek TOS (with the Animated extension as well)

Then, I don’t like:

 1. Voyager
 2. Enterprise

You can also add that the reviews were terrible (and Matrix 2 & 3 were successful but somehow have disappointed the audience). At least in the US and in Japan the tv series was quite known, in Europe it has never been. I’ve seen this masterpiece twice in a row in an empty theater the day it was released. A missed opportunity of what could have been the beginning of a great franchise…

A few suggestions:

Delete the scene in which Jar Jar Binks proposes that the senate grant the supreme chancellor emergency powers and revise the opening crawl to state that the senate has recently granted the supreme chancellor emergency powers to counter the separatists. Delete the character Jar Jar Binks entirely.

Restore Anakin mentioning that attachment is forbidden for a Jedi Knight, which emphasizes the motif of forbidden love and explains why they needed to keep the relationship secret.

Restore the emotional fireplace scene when Anakin confesses his feelings, which emphasizes the motif of forbidden love and explains why they needed to keep the relationship secret.

Restore the love confession scene and Anakin’s surprise reaction to Padmé, which emphasizes the motif of forbidden love and explains why they needed to keep the relationship secret.

Restore the scene when Anakin slaughters the sand people and the scene when he tells Padmé but remove the lines in which he describes slaughtering the women and children like animals. Fade to black as Anakin states, “I killed them. I killed them all.”

Restore Obi-Wan and Anakin’s antagonism after Padmé falls out of the transport, which emphasizes Anakin’s love for Padmé and his change in character.

Restore the Geonosian war room sequences which reveal the plans for the ultimate weapon.

Restore Yoda’s epic duel with Count Dooku but edit it slightly for length.

Restore Darth Sidious addressing Count Dooku as ‘Darth Tyrannus.’

Isn’t it funny that all the changes listed here would actually make the edit worse?

If you restore so much material, here would be the final result: http://www.amazon.com/Star-Wars-Attack-clones-Blu-ray/dp/B013JAFV42/ref=sr_1_1?s=movies-tv&ie=UTF8&qid=1458026042&sr=1-1

I think “most” is pushing it, but yeah, TPM has plenty of practical effects. It still has too many bad CG effects though. Maz is not a practical effet . 😉

Yeah, I know for Maz, it’s cgi. Bad CG in EpI ? EpII has strong cgi issues, but EpI is well done. But shitty designs for the pod racers and the annoncer. Jar Jar is still impressive nowadays.

It’s better than AOTC and ROTS, but it’s not fantastic. Like when a piece of the double-head-guy’s model intersects with itself.

I tend to forget that because it’s been corrected in the 2011 release.

Episode VIII : The Last Jedi - Discussion * SPOILER THREAD *
Time

It looks like PHANTOM MENACE and ATTACK OF THE CLONE material to me. Some kind of assassination attempt made against a high class society (local senate stuff ?). Seems Disney is going to get inspired by the PT for this Ep VIII. And I see they are still recycling McQuarrie’s concepts (which is great but sad at the same time).

JRR Tolkien's The Hobbit: turning a mediocre trilogy into one really good film (Released)
Time

Very interesting cut, really (I watched the first part, still need to watch the second part this evening). I don’t dislike the theatrical versions (I’m even a big fan of the first movie, which is almost perfect to my taste) but the second and third chapters miss the point with cartoonish and over the top action scenes, boring romance, failed humor (Alfrid…), and so on. You’ve cut a few things I like from the first movie (giant mountain battle, the gobelin ride, king gobelin death) but you’ve removed many things I can live without (Azog omnipresence, flash backs, unnecessary action, etc.), so I guess it’s nicely done and fast paced.

Are you going to do the same with the Lord of the Rings trilogy ?
