Just found this a while ago, just wanted to share this if anyone wants to make an edit such as this. It shows an alternate ending of the film, wherein Luke doesn’t die.

Ok but what happens to EpIX and the highly expected Luke’s Force ghost ?

Elevator scene is very good. I’ll add that to my “TLJ: wishcutlist to help me find the best fanedit available😃

I thought, “Oh, God! Mala’s found a glitch in what I just uploaded.”

😄

No worries, I made a very quick “sanity check”, didn’t find anything wrong. Video quality is strong (colors well balanced and quite pretty, unlike the bluray edition), sound is very fine and powerful (dts unlimited powaaaaaaaaaaa !), and the new kissing scene looks amazingly good (it even visually corrects the transition wipe to Kamino from previous versions, now keeping the warm/cold constrat that was lost with the blueish “nuit americanized” kissing), the crawl is perfect. Even the subtitles seem to be right in place. I would say this is final, you won’t need to upload/alter it again/further.

Just in case I would nevertheless suggest you to get full reviews before deleting all files from your VM.

So… congrats ! 2 out of 3, you’re almost done 😉

(ready to get another 10 years assignement to edit the Sequel Trilogy now ? 😃)

(last thing: I remember you mentioned you would make a complete uncompressed video release. I guess it’s off the table since it wouldn’t change too much to the video quality ?)

Right after the Confronting the Chancellor deleted scene. You helped me place it there when I was testing early versions of my edit lol!

And what scene comes after in your edit ? (I totally forgot to ask you a link for the final version by the way… I need as well to ask Dom for his cut… I need to stop watching EpIII for a long time I guess…)

The Force Awakens - Ridley's Edit (WIP)
Time

Expected, I’m usually harsher with TFA than most people on this forum 😃 No offense taken EddieDean 😉

(but we still agree on a few things, that’s something 😄)

My points of most of the changelist are the followings:

  • cut down the fact that a good character, Finn, turns into some kind of comic relief cliché after the first act (something TLJ corrected by the way after an equally bad “black sidekick from the 80’s” opening scene when he wakes up)

  • try to bend Ren into a more menacing vilain, not the one that is ruined with jokes here and there.

And since you mention the “Han is a legend” thing, I believe this is a very wrong meta layer in TFA. It bothers me the most as a matter of fact. It’s not “Han, the war hero” it’s literally “Han, the cool character from the original trilogy, 'member him ?”. I really hate it. I would totally be in favor of removing all the OT references for that very reason. Besides, I don’t get how a former stormtrooper - Finn - would refer Han as a “War hero”. So, I would really love this entire meta dialogues to be removed (but, again, I know I’m alone about this 😃):

  • Han Solo, the Rebellion general?
  • No, the smuggler.
  • Wasn’t he a war hero?
  • This is the ship that made the Kessel Run in 14 parsecs?
  • 12!

(really terrible lines IMHO)

And my issue with the Leia/Han lines is the lines themselves but also the way they are delivered (I don’t buy for a single second their relationship with this scene, it’s phony and probably the worst Leia/Han moment of the entire saga).

But about the jacket scene and the teenage celebration… I don’t hate it, I just feel it’s forced. The jacket scene can be cute in a way,I can agree about that, but the celebration really is excessive and is not even consistent with the next scene between Rey and Finn, so… yeah… maybe not removing it, but at least trying to tone it down so they more quickly pay attention to BB8 (besides I really like the way DigMod cut this scene, it felt less than a forced callback to ANH… something TFA has too much me-think).

i’ve just read your updated cutlist: seems good ! I wish you would cut more (slight comedic) things but I globaly agree with the list.

Any particular things you would like to see cut?

I checked my “perfect cutlist” on page 1 of your thread, and while I don’t agree with myself on a few things that I don’t mind anymore, I still think the following changes could improve TFA:

  • Cut Poe and Finn’s conversation after Finn says “Because it’s the right thing to do” [DigMod Edit]
  • Cut Finn’s “this is what we look like, some of us” lines [DigMod Edit]
  • Cut Finn and Rey’s excessive teenage celebration after they make it to space [DigMod Edit]
  • Cut the “14 parsecs” dialogues
  • Cut the cameo of the sphere Luke used in Episode IV
  • Cut Poe’s bull’s eye shots to free Han-Chewie-Finn [DigMod Edit] (not sure I doable seamlessly)
  • Cut Poe’s references to his jacket when talking to Finn [DigMod Edit, but keep the “you completed my mission” part of the dialogue]
  • Remove troopers walking away from Ren’s wrath after he discovers Rey is missing [DigMod Edit]
  • Trim Leia’s lines about good old times with Han “there was good moments” “pretty good”
  • Cut the “I’m in charge now !” part when Han and Finn encounter Phasma
  • Cut Finn’s Episode IV reference “Trash compactor”
  • Cut Snoke’s lines about Ren who needs to finish his training
  • Trim down the “puzzle map” scene so it get faster (it’s so obvious I don’t get why Poe needs to wait on BB8 request to give him/her the usb key)

(side note: Poe and Rey are in the very same shot ! Are you going to remove their “first” encounter in your TLJ edit ? 😃)

i’ve just read your updated cutlist: seems good ! I wish you would cut more (slight comedic) things but I globaly agree with the list. At two exceptions: the trimmed Max Von Sydow confrontation with Ren, which I find already short, but I would need to see it done so I may agree with the idea; the main thing I think I don’t agree with being the ending. But again I may change my mind about that when I get to see the finished result. The issue being I like fanedited version to keep the last shot of the official theatrical cut as it is (or more or less s it is, since Hal/Nev version has stabilized the shot).

it’s still coming! I’ll need to update the changelist a bit since this is now based on the latest version of Restructured and I’ve had a few new ideas as well.

Cool ! I still haven’t found my TFA “perfect cut edition”, yours could probably become what I’m looking for (gonna be a though choice between yours and Nev’s cut). You’re still planning on making Ben Solo parentage a revelation ? On second though, I find it couterntuitive. Restructured aims at reworking the SKB subplot into something that’s no longer mimicking ANH too much (it still does, but less). With a “revealation structure”, you’ll get closer to mimicking TESB, don’t you think ?

Star Wars: The Last Jedi - The Dark Cut (* unfinished project *)

I feel you should keep more of the escape. The only thing would be to remove the weird coin joke with BB8, but at least we can see them escape and then go outside. Here, we don’t get what’s going on, where and how they get the ship, and how did they find BB8. Cutting the chase is a good idea, but keeping some would avoid creating such issues.

Ranking the Star Wars films
Time

Updated ranking:

  1. A New Hope (1977)
  2. The Empire Strikes Back (1980)
  3. Return of the Jedi (1983)
  4. Revenge of the Sith (2005)
  5. The Phantom Menace (1999)
  6. The Last Jedi (2017)
  7. Attack of the Clones (2002)
  8. The Force Awakens (2015)
  9. Rogue One (2016)

I should probably put 5 and 6 as equals… or switch them… not sure… the fact is: I kinda like TLJ. Johnson failed many things but his entry has a soul and a heart that are worthy of the best (and the worst !) of Lucas era. And it looks GORGEOUS ! (seriously, it doesn’t look cheap like TFA, it’s beautifuly crafted and epic). And in a way TLJ is more a sequel to ROTS than a sequel to TFA.

edit: since I’m not a troll, I won’t put the Holiday special or the Ewok tvmovies in the list (let’s be serious: ranking them higher than the entire PT is pure trolling guys…), and The Clone Wars 2008 movie is not a real movie but more a tvseries pilot, so it doesn’t appear in my ranking as well. Had it been a movie, I would have put Tartakovsky’s Clone Wars between ROTJ and ROTS (or even higher, because it’s a masterpiece).

Yeah I know what you mean. I really wanted Hal9000 to remove that entire sequence in his TFA edit. Even without TLJ, this scene at the end of TFA was silly (so your grand imperial army is run by a ginger teenager and a totally incomplete guy who breaks computers every time he’s angry ? Ok… this is Trade Federation silliness level IMHO…); with TLJ, it’s more dumb than ever.
