I thought it was my job to deprecate ROTJ.

Had the saga stayed a trilogy, deprecating RotJ is something I would understand (when I saw it again in 2004 with the dvd released I was under shock: “oh… that’s how the OT dies… with thunderous ewoks”). With the hindsight given by episodes that are no way as good (or “as less bad”), I don’t waste time against it anymore. I even now like it quite a lot. The qualities outrank the bad sides. I still think it’s better than anything released after 1983 (even if I like RotS and I find TPM and TLJ very decent… I may rank TLJ higher than TPM one day, still undecided yet…). But I totally get it can be hated as the episode that rings the bell of SW not being that awesome anymore after two masterpieces.

I also want to hit on how Han Solo really has no consistent development in the movie. I did not see a big arc for him in the movie. And when he said “No, I’m a terrible person”, I was just flabbergasted. The whole exchange there was trying to paint Han Solo in this jaded anti-hero way, when really, in the context of his actions in Solo, there is absolutely no reason to see him as anything else than a good guy. Not even close to an anti-hero, or the roguish, jaded Han Solo that we meet in A New Hope. It felt like the movie was trying to shove it down our throats that yeah, Han Solo is jaded and not a good person!

Yeah, my biggest complaint about the story: it’s not about Solo, it’s about some random dude called Solo by a random imperial recruiter who pretends to be Solo but who’s so deeply in love and so good inside that he can’t be Solo… but he tries to be “bad”, “rogue” and “scoundrel”. There is no way this guy becomes the Solo I know from the OT. Being on the edge isn’t part of the Solo seen in Solo. It feels forced and unatural. He’s more a young Starlord than a young Solo.

So, as a “young Solo” flick, it doesn’t work for me. Sadly, as a “space op action flick set in the SW universe”, it doesn’t work either (the dumb story is a mess - ridiculous plot twists -, characters aren’t interesting, the cinematography is off with an ugly brownish look, I find the humor very childish… and it’s even a bigger mess when compared to the OT !).

Music is good though, it’s still something 😄 (and Chewie is cool… but Chewie is always cool, no matter what)

lol, what the HELL is Darth Maul doing in a young Han Solo movie? I haven’t seen the movie yet, but I imagine that it is absurd as it sounds.

Not that absurd: Maul became the leader of the underworld criminal society during the events of The Clone Wars. Han is a smugler, so he’s likely to be working with the criminal society. But

MINOR SPOILERS ABOUT THE CLONE WARS

Ok then, you’ve been warned: but Sidious left him for dead on Mandalore after killing his brother (yeah…), so we just assume Maul wasn’t killed… a second time !

END OF SPOILERS ABOUT THE CLONES WARS

I’m not able to do better with this idea than Darthrush, so consider his clip my candidate clip as well:

Per the suggestion of many to revisit my removal of Snoke throwing Hux around after the Resistance escapes, here is a new clip which restores one more line of dialogue before we cut back to the Resistance.

I must say that I really like how this flows after getting used to it. I tried including one more shot of Hux at the end but it just didn’t fit.

https://vimeo.com/272123709

Excellent take ! Is there a possibility to end the transition to the rebel fleet with a close up on Hux ? (I need to rewatch the original version to see if such shot exists). Anyway, this clips already is perfect.

I’ve added to the sum up list the kicking ladder alteration, according to Hal it might not be feasible but Darthrush has brought another idea, so until the alteration is fully dismissed it’s on the list.

One last thing: Hal, the crawl stays as it is, right ?

World Cup 2018
Time

Less than 3 weeks before the opening game. As always, I’ll follow France squad (obviously) und die Mannschaft (being of german origin). Two teams that can go very far:

  • France objective is to reach the semi-finals (which means: at least Top 3)
  • so is the German objective, but the real one is to keep the title twice in a row, and to add a fifth star on the jersey

I’m not very confident for many reasons (Spain back in business, Brazil getting better), so… we shall see when it begins !

So…

Allez les Bleus !

and

Deutschland !

and May the FIFA be with you. Always.

The Last Jedi: Legendary (Released)
Time

I take the liberty to sum up the current state of the edit one week after the previous sum up (that way people joining forces know what’s currently going on):

Work in progress changes (to be implemented):

  • Apply DrDre’s LUT to the complete movie
  • Rescore the Luke deleted scene with Torn Apart
  • Trim even further the heavy, direct hinting before Snoke’s death (add Torn Apart strings)
  • Trim the ladder sequence with Rose’s sister
  • Removing Snoke berating Hux at the end of the opening battle

Changes considered but not decided yet:

  • Sir Ridley’s enhanced Yoda puppetry (postponed to a v2 next year ?)
  • Remove the captain obvious scene of the “we’re taking heavy loses”
  • Remove Poe’s “big ass door”
  • Rework Rose and Finn meeting (maybe put back the cut portions, or cutting more)

Things that WON’T be altered in this edit (but Darthrush is changing all of that in his edit for those who wish something more radical):

  • Luke tossing the saber
  • Leia using the Force
  • Maz caméo
  • Luke milking the female alien
  • Luke making PT references
  • The ending with the broom kid

Changes already implemented (see workprint#2):

  • Trimmed the opening ‘prank call’ joke to prevent it from venturing into SNL territory while retaining the core of the humor
  • Reinstated the ‘Luke Has a Moment’ deleted scene
  • Reinstated the deleted scene where Poe gives Finn back his jacket (with scene transition provided by OT.com user pleasehello)
  • At their first meeting, removed Finn telling Rose to breathe
  • Removed Rose repeating, “They can track us through lightspeed.“
  • Removed both appearances from the ‘Caretakers’ on Ach-to (with a visual effects shot courtesy of OT.com user snooker)
  • Trimmed away the lone porg who gives Chewie the doughy eyes, though leaving the joke intact otherwise
  • Removed Luke’s line to R2, “Nothing can make me change my mind.”
  • Cut down the first sequence at Canto Bight to focus solely on finding the master codebreaker (also removing sounds of coins rattling around inside BB8 in two shots)
  • Blended the original Anakin lightsaber ignition sound with the existing different sounds for two shots
  • Made it appear as though Finn and Rose follow DJ out of the cell, briefly elude the guards, and the scene ends. Next time we see the trio, they are already in hyperspace (also removing the implication in the later scene that BB8 helped steal the ship).
  • Removed Rey asking Kylo Ren is he has a cowl to put on
  • Added a center wipe transition from the scene with Finn, Rose, and DJ in hyperspace to the fleet losing their medical frigate
  • Used a few shots from a deleted scene to remove the iron/spaceship gag, which borrowed from an old spoof which laughed at Star Wars rather than along with Star Wars
  • Trimmed some of the comedy with BB8 being placed under a basket
  • Removed the detail from Kylo Ren that Rey’s parents are buried in the Jakku desert, as this seems at odds with the vision we saw in The Force Awakens.
  • Moved the scene with Luke and Yoda to immediately prior to Leia looking out over Crait (using audio and video provided by OT.com user Darthrush)
  • Removed Finn’s line about the battering ram canon being “old Death Star tech.”
  • The crate Luke sits on as he talks with Leia is now stationary and motionless, unaffected by him (effect provided by OT.com user poppasketti)
Removed Rey’s triple-TIE combo shot, with the Falcon’s involvement in the battle being first revealed with its shadow swee- ping by and a single TIE being shot down
  • Trimmed Hux ordering fighters to follow the Falcon, leaving this poor tactical move to be attributed to Kylo Ren’s emotional priorities
  • Removed Finn’s line, “Oh, they hate that ship!”
  • Abbreviated Finn’s suicide run, so that the audience hasn’t had enough time to accept it and get totally on board with it (toward the end of a film that relishes jerking its audience around)
  • After Rose saves Finn, removed her line about not “fighting what we hate” and “saving what we love.”
  • Snuck in a Wilhelm scream… somewhere in the movie.

The death of every crew member was touching in it’s own way - especially Rios and L3’s death were heart breaking.

I didn’t find that touching. I was even glad that SJW L3 got killed… (and her death scene is ridiculous… it’s just a droid, just retrieve the memory card and put that elsewhere… AND NOT AS THE FALCON AI IF POSSIBLE GUYS !!! Stop ruining the OT, just make movies slightly related but stop making retcon that just don’t work and are lame).

Rogue One does not work on its own. It’s a cinematographic parasite that adheres between Episode III & IV. SOLO on the other hand works on its own. A person who never saw a single STAR WARS movie could watch SOLO without any previous knowledge.

This is very true. R1 is a fake stand-alone, while, this time Solo really is a stand-alone (one shot or trilogy ?).

You nevertheless get plenty of references that serve no purpose and complete scenes recycled from Ep 4-5 and even 7… with a “teenage point of view” which is kinda super lame (the kissing scene aboard the falcon is very embarrassing).

Like, Jesus Christ a female major character Droid in a Star Wars movie? That’s social justice-- Star Wars is for boys only!

You missed the point. It has nothing to do with the gender of the droid that it’s some kind of SJW droid. And it’s not really a major character. But it fits the teenage tone of the movie, just only teenage humor, dialogues and interactions.

I’ve never heard “the Redmen” being used except here by Jason. I’m only aware of the nickname “the Reds” (according to wiki, also exist “Scousers” and “Merseysiders”).

Anyway, next season they should give the trophy directly to Real Madrid and then play the competition normaly.

This film is tracking poorly. I wonder how much of that is bad PR, how much is TLJ carryover, how much is fatigue and how much is people just not caring about this film?

Maybe it’s just because it’s bad and many people assume it is that bad without taking the chance to watch it (and are right to do so) ?

And thank god no distracting fan service like Rogue One.

You mean that the heavy and dumb fanservice wasn’t distracting this time ?

(I love the fact that Lando’s guard outift of RotJ is just a costume in his garde-robe from the past… oh did I say I loved it ? No, sorry, I meant it was lame fanservice)

(and the detonator reference after 5 minutes…)

(and every 5 minutes, a recycled line from the OT…)

(this movie… seriously…)

but it’s got nowt to do with Disney, so stop with the unsubstantiated claims - it also cheapens your viewpoint and those that may share your views on the retcons.

Isn’t Disney producing the new movies the same way they produce the Marvel or other series they own ? (real question)
Because it’s totally relevant when talking about the new movies to base any analysis about that fact which makes a clear distinction between the Lucas/independant era and the Disney/corporation era of the Saga. It’s so clear at every single level (good or bad, to each is own point of view on that) that I don’t want to stay blind about that and pretend we can talk about Solo or else the same way we were talking about Ep I to VI. SW was a Saga. It’s now a Franchise. You can love it, that’s fine. But you can’t pretend it’s not true and saying Disney has nothing to do with that.
