The Last Jedi: Legendary (Released)
Time

Sounds good to me. If other tweaks are made, just keep a logbook of the number of frames removed/added and the section which is concerned.

If I’m not mistaken, here is the current state for workprint#3:

New changes:

  • Rescore the Luke deleted scene with Torn Apart
  • Trim even further the heavy, direct hinting before Snoke’s death (add Torn Apart strings)
  • Trim the ladder sequence with Rose’s sister
  • Removing Snoke berating Hux at the end of the opening battle

Work in progress changes (video only):

  • Apply DrDre’s LUT to the complete movie

Changes considered/postponed:

  • Sir Ridley’s enhanced Yoda puppetry (postponed)
  • Remove the captain obvious scene of the “we’re taking heavy loses” (still considered ?)
  • Remove Poe’s “big ass door” (feasible ?)

Already in Workprint#2:

  • Trimmed the opening ‘prank call’ joke to prevent it from venturing into SNL territory while retaining the core of the humor
  • Reinstated the ‘Luke Has a Moment’ deleted scene
  • Reinstated the deleted scene where Poe gives Finn back his jacket (with scene transition provided by OT.com user pleasehello)
  • At their first meeting, removed Finn telling Rose to breathe
  • Removed Rose repeating, “They can track us through lightspeed.“
  • Removed both appearances from the ‘Caretakers’ on Ach-to (with a visual effects shot courtesy of OT.com user snooker)
  • Trimmed away the lone porg who gives Chewie the doughy eyes, though leaving the joke intact otherwise
  • Removed Luke’s line to R2, “Nothing can make me change my mind.”
  • Cut down the first sequence at Canto Bight to focus solely on finding the master codebreaker (also removing sounds of coins rattling around inside BB8 in two shots)
  • Blended the original Anakin lightsaber ignition sound with the existing different sounds for two shots
  • Made it appear as though Finn and Rose follow DJ out of the cell, briefly elude the guards, and the scene ends. Next time we see the trio, they are already in hyperspace (also removing the implication in the later scene that BB8 helped steal the ship).
  • Removed Rey asking Kylo Ren is he has a cowl to put on
  • Added a center wipe transition from the scene with Finn, Rose, and DJ in hyperspace to the fleet losing their medical frigate
  • Used a few shots from a deleted scene to remove the iron/spaceship gag, which borrowed from an old spoof which laughed at Star Wars rather than along with Star Wars
  • Trimmed some of the comedy with BB8 being placed under a basket
  • Removed the detail from Kylo Ren that Rey’s parents are buried in the Jakku desert, as this seems at odds with the vision we saw in The Force Awakens.
  • Moved the scene with Luke and Yoda to immediately prior to Leia looking out over Crait (using audio and video provided by OT.com user Darthrush)
  • Removed Finn’s line about the battering ram canon being “old Death Star tech.”
  • The crate Luke sits on as he talks with Leia is now stationary and motionless, unaffected by him (effect provided by OT.com user poppasketti)
Removed Rey’s triple-TIE combo shot, with the Falcon’s involvement in the battle being first revealed with its shadow swee- ping by and a single TIE being shot down
  • Trimmed Hux ordering fighters to follow the Falcon, leaving this poor tactical move to be attributed to Kylo Ren’s emotional priorities
  • Removed Finn’s line, “Oh, they hate that ship!”
  • Abbreviated Finn’s suicide run, so that the audience hasn’t had enough time to accept it and get totally on board with it (toward the end of a film that relishes jerking its audience around)
  • After Rose saves Finn, removed her line about not “fighting what we hate” and “saving what we love.”
  • Snuck in a Wilhelm scream… somewhere in the movie.

So now that Solo is out, is there anything from it that may influence this edit?

Both Solo and Rogue One did a decent job at making OT Stormtroopers seem intimidating and a credible threat.

?

You mean the stormtroopers killed with random blind shots or with a stick in Rogue One ? I thought they were quite consistent with stormtroopers seen in RotJ/TFA/TLJ (but not with AotC/RotS/ANH/TESB).

I can’t comprehend how anyone could even consider rewatching the Holiday Special.

I like it. I especially like introducing it to other people. That and Song of the South.

I won’t defend the quite boring and ideologically questionable Song of the South, but I love the animated parts with the rabbit character. I wish Disney would someday at least release that material in HD.

<em>Solo: A Star Wars Story</em> — Official Review and Opinions Thread — <strong>SPOILERS</strong>

Seems like many people voted with their dollars this weekend. I’ve read some opinions saying that they won’t be watching any Star Wars in the cinema if Kennedy remains in the cockpit. Would things really get better if… let’s say, Filoni replaced her?

Being a show runner (and a good one) and being a producer ain’t quite the same job. Kennedy should stick at making things happening, instead of interfering with artistic decisions.

(in fact we need Lucas: not at the scripts, not directing, but showing the path, what he did with TCW…)

Unpopular opinion: Despite his unreasonable 0/10 ranking of Rogue One, I find Mala’s opinions to be interesting and fun to read.

I give it 2/10 now ! (don’t ask me why… maybe because I feel no SW should deserve 0… and I like the soundtrack, the visual, and even if it doesn’t make much sense at a story level, the Vader’s big scene is brillant).

Yep, I agree abot the crawl, I just wanted to be sure.

As for the Hux scene, just a last minute idea about this scene: could a “old school” wipe transition been applied from the FO communication lady to the rebel fleet ? (in order to add more SW signature wipes to the movie) (maybe with a slight slow motion added ?)

(it might be a terrible idea, I’m used to it, don’t mind telling me 😃)

Otherwise, like I said 2 posts ago, Dartrush version works perfectly fine as it is 😉

The Force Awakens: Official Review Thread - ** SPOILERS **
Time

Very interesting analysis by Film Crit Hulk, talking a bit about the PT (mostly Ep3) and Ep7.

Now, let’s go to “Scene 2,” which is actually a climactic scene from George Lucas’ Revenge of the Sith. Yup, we’re going to talk about the prequels! Which I honestly feel like are the perfect examples of “bad texture” movies. Because, while I can make a few positive arguments for certain moments within them, nearly everything about the prequels falls flat. The vast majority of performances are monotone and stilted. The characters rarely feel like they’re in the environments they’re in (in a way that goes beyond VFX limitations to just the framing and composition). Heck, there’s so little kinetic energy to most of the filmmaking that everything feels like a live table read with special effects. What’s more, and a fact that I rarely see discussed regarding these movies, is how they were really just rough-as-hell first drafts that were written on yellow legal pads (really, check the special features). There never seemed to be any real rewriting or care that went into penning the script for more elegant textural depths.

But this also where it gets interesting, because we know George outlined heavily and worked on sequences from very early stages. And, knowing his career, George actually has a pretty damn keen story sense. So when you really look at the structure and the actual “story text,” you see he understands how to build a weirdly solid foundation. I swear if you were to outline these movies, you would see something shockingly functional with simple, clear mechanics. He even builds up confrontations where we know what everyone wants and is trying to do. And even though he’s largely using broad tropes, the story attached to those tropes has genuine meaning and thematic intention.

But dramatic clarity is not the issue of the prequels. Even though we have all the building blocks we could potentially need to build empathy, George just didn’t know how to bring any of it to life in a convincing way. It’s all text. No texture. This is somewhat ironic, given that, many years later, my argument for the problems with The Force Awakens would be the exact opposite. I’ve spoken about it at length before, but it was the ultimate “texture” movie. Perhaps, after the failings of the prequel, it was so important to them to nail everything about the look, feel and aesthetic of Star Wars (1977). And they certainly tried to bring it to life with verve, delight and emotion. But the clarity on the story level is a damn mess, largely because it used the patented J.J. Abrams mystery-box methodology of constantly aiming away from coherent drama and instead more toward random “surprises” (along with delaying important dramatic questions they don’t actually have any coherent answers to).
