28 Days Later (2002) - 1080p Widescreen and Fullscreen Filmized Remasters (Widescreen released)

No offense but AI is atrocious. It looks like a cartoon or a painting.

You know that movie is stuck in 480p, right ? So what you see here is the best result I could get at the moment with AI technology. IMHO it looks better in motion than the best official source. Look for comparison screenshots between the two in the first post.

I compared the AC-3 pitch of the original DVD with the DTS-HDMA pitch of the bluray and I don’t hear any issue. Are you sure about this ? In the meantime, here is the progress so far with both widescreen and fullscreen versions

28 Days Later (2002) - 1080p Widescreen and Fullscreen Filmized Remasters (Widescreen released)

From what I’ve been working on so far, the European DVD is in 25fps and widescreen but has less details than its bluray counterpart, which is indeed in 23.976fps. On the other side, the original fullscreen DVD is in 29,97fps so there is no proper way to get back the original framerate without losing quality or tweaking sources for this project.

I don’t know what would work best between those two options :

  • Change framerate to fit original pitch
  • Change pitch to fit both framerate and pitch

28 Days Later (2002) - 1080p Widescreen and Fullscreen Filmized Remasters (Widescreen released)
Time

Hi everyone,

Here are screenshots of a project I’ve been working on for the last few days.

How actual video AI upscale tools can really help to improve footage stuck in SD ?

In this case, the main goal was to restore “28 Days Later” to an acceptable image quality, knowing most of the film was shot in 480p (except the last sequence in 35mm).

Applying my 4K Filmized Remaster process (but in 1080p in this cas), I used original bluray (in widescreen) to see what I could be able to achieve.

Here are the results so far :

  • Less edge enhancement
  • Less artifacts due to the 480p source
  • Preserved details on complex shots (shadows and water)
  • Better grain structure (mostly close to a Super 16 grain structure)
  • Slightly adjuster color grading

Given the source, I won’t make miracles but it should be fun to achieve something with both the widescreen and fullscreen versions of the film.

Stay tuned.

The Fly (1986) 4K Filmized Remaster with neutral color grading
Time

Hi all,

Next in the 4K Filmized Remaster series, The Fly remake directed by David Cronenberg in 1986. I’ve always loved this movie and Jeff Goldblum’s performance. Unfortunately, I’ve also always found the original bluray to look messy so I decided to give it a proper remaster.

As usual, original untouched image from the bluray has been used as a source. Image has been upscaled using my best Topaz Video AI settings, a film grain has been applied and color grading has been corrected to recover details from the messy contrasts. Original audio is also untouched as follows : DTS-HDMA 5.1 in VO, DTS 5.1 in VF and AC-3 5.1 transcodes of both audios.

Since you’re starting with the remastered Blu-rays, did you reverse the blurry B&W appearance of the flashback shots?

I used the untouched remastered image as intended by Peter Jackson, I only removed the green tint but the flashbacks are still in close to black and white

The Lord of the Rings Trilogy (Extended Versions) - 4K Filmized Remasters with neutral color grading (released)
Time

Hi everyone,

Next in the 4K Filmized Remaster series, I present you the whole Lord of the Rings Trilogy in its extended version.

Starting with the untouched remastered blurays, I applied my 4K Filmized process to the whole trilogy, including my own Topaz Video AI settings, a new film grain layer close to film stock used on set and a neutral color grading in the spirit of what I did on the Titanic 4k Filmized Remaster.

I decided to start fresh from the remastered blurays because Dre is already working on its own 4K remastered extended versions, using the original blurays. I’m really looking forward to his work. I also really loved the new color grading of the official remasters, even if it was a little too green-ish for my taste, so I corrected it in the 4K Filmized process. You’ll find screenshots below. Original audios have been added, including VO TrueHD Atmos, VO DTS-HDMA, VO Dolby Surround EX and VFI DTS-HDMA.

You know what to do if you’re interested.

Star Wars Prelogy | 4K Filmized Remasters (Released)
Time

Hi everyone,

I’m pleased to announce that 4K Filmized Remasters of the whole Prelogy are now ready.

While Episode I will surely look the least impressive of the set, I think it now looks better than the official 4K remaster (see screenshots comparison above). I did what I could, given the quality of the baked-in 1080p bluray master.

On the other side, Episode II and III really benefits of the 4K Filmized Remaster process but I’ll let you all judge by yourselves. Just DM me if you’re interested.

Now I consider this project done but every review is welcomed, while other 4K Filmized Remaster may be on the way.

Troy (2004) Director's Cut - 4K Filmized Remaster with neutral color grading (released)
Time

I wonder how a 4k restoration will be treated… the theatrical edition features an original score which was modified for the extended director’s cut unfortunately. What the DC got: “The score of the film was changed dramatically, with many of the female vocals being cut. An addition to the music is the use of Danny Elfman’s theme, from Tim Burton’s Planet of the Apes (2001), during the pivotal fight between Hector and Achilles in front of the Gates of Troy.”

Would love a Director’s cut with the original score added back in the mix. Unfortunately, I think Petersen wasn’t satisfied with this original score and didn’t have time and money enough from the studio to record a brand new score. Director’s cut is also vastly superior to the theatrical cut, even if the theatrical cut would offer better sound options than this DC.

TITANIC 4K Filmized Open Matte Remaster with original color grading

@MJBenito: if you find the time, it would be great if you could answer the questions I raised about the source and the sharpening differences, thanks.

As mentioned in the original post, the 3D bluray is the source used for this 4K Filmized remaster. I used my own Topaz Video AI settings after many tests to get the most natural look. That means that compression has been fixed and details may have a been recovered during the process. I made sure that no sharpening was added in the process because it was the main goal of the project : get rid of the oversharpened look of the official 4K remaster.

Unfortunately, I won’t have time for a v3 version. It is what it is now and I’m 100% satisfied with the 4K Filmized Remaster than with the official 4K master.

I noticed macro blocking in under water shots and some of the blurred backgrounds. I’m curious if that’s in the 3D Blu-ray source or happened during the processing?

It’s unfortunately part of the 2012 master which was used as the source for the offical 4k image. Many videos are showing differences between both masters over YouTube.

More screenshots from Episode II and Episode III 4K Filmized Remasters. At this moment, both are ready to release but I’m still unhappy with results on Episode I, even if larger shots looks clearly better than the official 4K image. It is giving me hard work to bring back a natural look to the heavily DNR’d and compressed 1080p master. Anyway, stay tuned.

Hello there !

Sourced from the original single layered (!) bluray, 1080p image has been upscaled in 4K using my own Topaz Video AI settings, geometry of the Scope has been corrected and a new neutral color grading has been applied to get rid of the yellow/green tint.

Original 5.1 AC-3 audio mixes are also included in English and Truefrench, as well as the TrueHD audio in English.

Me, Myself & Irene (2000) 4K Filmized Remaster (with neutral color grading)
Time

Hello there.

A new 4K Filmized Remaster is making its entry in the series today : the beloved “Me, Myself & Irene” starring Jim Carrey and Renee Zellweger. Sourced from the original bluray encoded in mpeg-2 (!), the image has been upscaled using my Topaz Video AI 4 settings and a neutral color grading has been applied. Audio includes original AC-3 5.1 audio in Truefrench and TrueHD 5.1 audio in English.

PM me if interested.
